Extremely slow battery charging on Nexus 5 after updating to lollipop

Well, I don't think it's related to the apps, because I left my phone charging on the wall switched off ... in 4 hours it charged 40%... I don't think the apps are running with the phone switched off.. :S

And also, this was after making a factory reset, with only the default google apps installed on my phone!

15 hours to charge my Nexus 7 with it's charger. Then when it comes on it crashes constantly and apps don't work. Thanks Google.

we solved my problem of not being able to charge my phone while the device was on. I was on the phone with Google tech support for 2 hours this morning. We deleted lollipop from my Nexus 5 and reinstalled Kit Kat. That solved all of my problems. I am going to hold off quite a while before reinstalling lollipop

That's what I intended to do when I called Google. Instead they told me to do a factory reset and see the results.

I've been charging the device all day. May be my impression, but it seems that it's charging a bit faster now, however not as fast as it was charging when I had Kit Kat installed. :(

I have seem to have this same problem but on my Nexus 4. I used the official google wireless charger (the one you get from the playstore) and after flashing the 5.0 OTA onto the phone it now seems to take ~8 hours to change the phone from about 20% it used to take only 3ish. Really annoying looking at the battery meter it seems to be charging at a steady rate just really really slow

I am having the exact same problem. I've tried using the charger that came with my Nexus, one that came with my father's phone, and a generic one. After 20 minutes on the charger, it is only at 1% (from having died previously.)
I also have the phone now shutting down if I use it on the charger. It never used to do this.
Have had this problem the past three days since updating to lollipop via factory image. It currently says my phone will take 9 hours to complete a full charge on the lock screen.

I called the (Swedish) support and was asked to do a factory reset as well. The result is about the same as yours. The phone is charging faster now, but still noticeable slower than KitKat.

I too have the same problem. Before the upgrade my problem was the camera bug, my battery drains so fast but few days later it was gone then, the upgrade came but with charging issue. It says there 3 hours to complete the charging. I have noticed the slowness in when I reached 50%. I hope they cab fix this soon. I'm quite worried with the battery since this is not replaceable.

I updated from the notification on my Nexus 5, since the update my phone has been on charge for 5 hours gotten to 70% and says that I have 3 hours till fully charged. Not only this but my battery dies ridiculously fast, I left my phone with 40% with my alarm on over night and it was dead in the morning. I went to work with battery save on and having 20% as I only got that from an hour in the morning and it was dead in 4 hours of not even touching it. I am using the default wall mount with a new cable. Which would charge my phone in 2-3hours to full in KitKat 4.4. It has made my phone useless as I can hardly have the phone off the charger for more than 4 hours without it dieing.

I have a Nexus 5, and I charge it wirelessly (using the Google Qi charger).

I have not noticed any difference in charge time after the OTA update to Lollipop. I have not noticed a significant change in battery life either. My phone frequently ends the day with 60-75% battery remaining.

If you look at your Settings-Battery, what is draining the most from your phone?

At first my Nexus 5 was charging slower and battery was draining faster. Then the 3G symbol disappeared for a while and it just showed the bars. At first it looked weird but I got used to it not saying 3G etc. Them I liked it after a day. Then I turned off my phone and turned it on same issue. I liked the signal bars showing without the signal type, but I hated the slow charging. I let it die down to 1% then charged it to full. When it was full I encrypted my phone for the hell of it. Encryption took only 15 minutes for me and after it turned on again the phone showed the signal type and charging was back to high speed. I think the new Software just has to adjust to the level of use and type of charging. I use a 2Amp wired charger and a Nexus 5 TechMatte wireless charger (for over night charging) with another 2Amp adapter. I would say just "train" your battery to recognize where battery levels are at and what charging output your using. Or maybe my encrypting the phone helped out.

POSSIBLE FIX!!
Last night a flashed the cache partition and all user data. Now my phone can charge properly and last about the same if not more than before.
Here is a website that goes through what to do. I didn't test if just one or the other works.
cellphoneforums .net/lg/t366718-lg-nexus-5-master-reset-clear-cache-partition-boot-safe-mode.html#axzz3IF3b5equ
Remove spaces I can't post links :p

EDIT: After a day either its gone back to being crap or I mistook the charging rate. had it next to an iPhone 5 plugged into usb3 and the Iphone started at 20% now 65% my phone was 14% now 33% plugged into the wall charger. Its just **** and my phone is becoming unusable.

New os updates are always crazy, especially this drastic of a change. Chill, Android os rocks and that's why we use it. Also usb charging is slow, even if you plug a standard usb cable into your brick it's slow. Use a wall charger, preferably the 1 that came with the phone and then complain.

Update:
Currently my nexus has died completly!
Charged over night with the official charger in a wall charge and it charged only up to 33%!
I've noticed that the screen lost some color and had some strange purple bleeding also. :(
It seems to discharge even when switched off, because 2 hours after being off (it was at 19% when switched off) I turned it on and it was at 8%!

Currently it does not charge at all! It displays the led blinking a red light and does nothing!

Let's see what response I have from Google... :(

My wife and I both have Nexus 5. Her phone has completely drained and wont hold a charge to turn back on. Getting red light.

I got the red light yesterday, but did a reset And it came back on. But it says 6 hrs to full charge and won't charge past 60% when I left it on the wall charger all night.

The first time I charged my Nexus 5 right after Lollipop upgrade took over 5 hours. The 2nd time it only took 2 hours to charge which was normal. I can't say for sure what fixes the problem but the only major thing I did in between the 2 charges was wiping cache partition. Something you might want to try if you still have this problem. P.S. I always charge using the wall charger.

I dont mind the new software Lollipop, but from 37% battery it tells me that it will take 17hrs to fully charge and the back of my Nexus4 got quite hot.All this was using the original cable and wall adaptor

Hi guys,
I installed Lollipop via factory image and I'm also having the same issue. I've wiped the partition etc. This isn't an OTA issue apparently. I'm down to 68% battery life in 2 hours and I've barely used the device.

The solution for poor charging time might be by killing specific apps. Like previous poster "K Paddy" says: the problem is probably battery drain from apps that have not been updated for Lollipop yet. An app might be draining energy in the background and increasing your charge time.

What i did was the following:
A) Check if the phone charges at a "normal" rate while it is turned completely off: a Nexus 5 should be able to charge at about 1% per minute while shut down and on a wall charger (0% to 100% in about 1 hour 40 minutes or slightly more). If it can do this, then the hardware is probably okay.

B) So if the battery can charge normally while the phone is shut down, it is probably a software problem, so what i did was the following:
- Backup my phone data like photos, videos and documents: always backup before making any changes to apps.
- Go to "Settings"
- Go to "Apps"
- For every app, i selected "stop now", to kill the app process. Note: i did not delete apps and i did not delete any app data. I just stopped the app from running.
- Check if that reduced my charge time
- If yes, that app is drarining my battery and increasing charge time.

In this way you can identify and isolate any apps that are draining battery.

Hi Hiperlouro,

You might have hardware and a software problem. Let me explain. About 3 weeks ago my N5 battery got replaced under warranty. Problems included:
- Not charging at all when plugged in, also a message "not charging" in the settings/battery screen.
- Not charging when fully switched off or erratic charging (difficult to explain readings)

After replacing the battery it ran fine for about a week under KitKat 4.4. After downloading Lollipop i suspected my hardware problem was back again. But when fully switched off it charged at normal rate: i consider about 1% per minute normal for a N5 and it achieved that rate. Makes me believe the battery is fine and some software is causing the problem. And yes, it seems it was software related (see my other post in this thread). After a factory reset and killing some running processes battery charging improves dramatically. Now, after trying to isolate bad apps and having the new battery, my N5 seems to be fine.

It is understandable that not all apps are bugfree so early after release of Lollipop and that some apps might cause battery drain. My tip to you is to check whether this is hardware or software, or both.

My guess is that your N5's battery probably needs replacing. Need to get that checked at your point-of-sale/ shop. If need be get it replaced under warranty. After that debug any remaining software issues.
