Galaxy Note 10.1 4.3

But we're not talking about just any product. We are talking about cell phones and tablets. There is an expectation, due to precedent, amongst most consumers to keep them current for at least 2 yrs, due to carrier contracts. I didn't go out and buy an S4 when it came out, simply because my S3 is only 1 yr old, and I don't have $600+ to go buy a new phone out of pocket. With tablets (I'm WiFi only, not on a carrier), it's even worse, because the cost isn't subsidized. I can't throw down several hundred dollars every other year to buy the latest and greatest. And if the want people to buy the latest and greatest, the expectation is there to take care of us while we're on the last gen hardware
I personally think that my contract with AT&T has nothing to do with getting OS upgrades from Samsung, I'm locked into a 2-year agreement with AT&T for their service.

Actually it does and it is the partial problem too. I bet ATT have wanted to add bloatware to models they sell and it causing lack and delays to get possible updates. http://www.howtogeek.com/163958/why-do-carriers-delay-updates-for-android-but-not-iphone/

That explains why they're delayed. It's not breaking contract if I buy a newer phone from somewhere else and get a newer version of Android.

Yea. As far as I know, carriers need time to add their crap in their phones

Right, which leads me back to rooting. I haven't seen an official carrier OS update in years because I just flash a new ROM when it comes out. I'm running 4.3 on my Note 2 right now and have been for some time.

I meant upgrades like ECU or electronics upgrades. My bad. That's for you Zr2.

What about it? I never said updates won't happen, just that nobody should expect them, or worse, demand them.

I expected it cause it was stated that 4.2 would be released for Samsung flagship devices and what happened? New devices, that's what happened.

That doesn't mean the updates aren't still coming. I wouldn't be surprised if they got pushed back to hit deadlines for the new devices, though. That kind of stuff happens.

I know the following is going to sound exceedingly ignorant (it wouldn't be the first time), so forgive me that. The the only feature that 4.3 offers that I know I'm interested in is FLASH TRIM. What are the updates besides that that would push Samsung to invest the resources, the updates that are going to make the devices much better than on launch?

I understand that it's fun to pick a side and argue that side to the death. I've done it myself at times on this site and sometimes I re-read it and realize I sound like a fool. Anyone on here standing on their soapbox and repeatedly saying OS updates should not be expected, need to think about how they would feel if they never got updates. Everyone talking about how we shouldn't want updates, are those who own the 2014 Note 10.1, the Note 3, the Nexus 7 (probably the newest one) or they own the Moto X or the HTC One or some other newer device. It's so easy to judge people with older devices when you are able to get the newest and most recent device every 3-6 months. Some of us can't, and when you can't (if you're a big fan of Android and technology) you REALLY want some of these new features that get announced. Maybe those of you who have the blessing and opportunity to upgrade at will, just take a small step back and try to see it from the other point of view.

Sure, no one should demand upgrades or get angry if/when they wont happen. But don't talk at us about how after a year this or that may or may not happen because you probably don't ever or very often have the same device for a year. If you don't like or hope for upgrades, that's fantastic for you. But that doesn't mean some of us can't hope for them or even get frustrated when they don't happen. Hope can easily and quickly change into frustration over time and that's natural. I don't understand why we have to debate the same topic in circles for 4+ pages every couple weeks. Those who agree can discuss, and those who disagree can speak their peace and move on. With your brand spanking new electronics you probably have better things to do anyway!

Not sure if I'm lumped in on this post but I can say that I'm not one to get a new device every 6 months (anymore). I wait just as long as others do now or try to find deals on eBay. I know what it's like to have a device that rarely get updates. I had the Motorola Photon for a while and that didn't get any love from Sprint or Moto.

Going with what you said above, don't assume that just because we don't expect updates that we always get the newest devices as soon as they come out.

Folks who think that a tablet, phone, or computer OEM is somehow obligated to provide major OS upgrades or that it must alter its fundemental business model to suit the desires of what is likely a small subset of users, are destined to be disappointed.

Compatibility with Gear. The old Note isnt compatible with Gear before it gets Android 4.3 (bt issue). SNote compatibility - im not sure (havent really checked it!) but I read about it from somewhere that the new SNote version would need also Android 4.3. This is just pulled from the hat. I was trying to solve the problem I faced with SNote files when sharing them between Note-devices and saw a mention like that on somewhere. I dont really know if it is true or not, but the problem of the sharing is still there and cannot be fixed until Samsung updates SNotes in these "old" devices. And if the new version of SNote requires Android 4.3, the update is needed.

Someone pointed out you have to pay for MS upgrades to windows. Its a simi good point with a few exceptions. First MS does not release a new version of Windows every single year. There are huge gaps in versions. Second MS does all the R&D for Windows and pays developers and code writers etc. Samsung pays nothing for the Android OS. They only pay for the folks to skin it. So there is a big difference in expecting an upgrade on our phones and tablets.
