Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

So what? The Play Store version also gets tested, of course. What we're talking about, what Ars made a point to ask, is whether the carrier version will have *additional* delays, and the answer was they might. These delays can be months. They can involve modifying the software. If the update doesn't come the same day as the Play Store version, then that's a problem.

No, the answer definitely was not they might. In the article you referenced, Dave Burke from Google actually said "I don't think we're going to do that" when asked about update delays. That was the author of the article who said he thinks there could be. And like I said, he doesn't know any more than you or I know. You should really read the articles you refer to. You're making these statements and assumptions with no basis in reality whatsoever.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

WRONG! The carrier branded devices go through extra months of testing. That's why the European devices get updates from all OEMS months before we get them here in the US. Will this happen for the Nexus? We shall see.

Do you even know what you're saying? I said that all phones go through testing and you said I'm wrong...that carrier branded phones go through extra testing. How does that make me wrong?
And European OEMs don't always get updates first. That's nonsense.

The language is sufficiently vague and means exactly what Ron said - there might be delays but Google hopes the carriers won't do it this time. If Google had reached an agreement of same day updates, they would've directly replied and said so.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

You know, when an iOS update comes out, every single supported iPhone can grab it within minutes. That's the true meaning of 'one model'. Not this nonsense about 'carriers need to test this, there may be delays etc etc'. This is total bs. iPhone runs on multiple carriers and its updates are also tested, but when Apple has an update, it doesn't matter where you bought the phone or how. You get the update.

This is basically what everyone was afraid of.

It's tested on every carrier first. You're missing that whole concept.

So much this.
But I don't think he wants to hear that because he's on some rage against carriers and refuses to believe the Nexus phones that carriers sell won't have delays. He's already decided the carriers will load them up with apps and delay the updates for months. Logic and facts don't matter to some people.

How is it vague? How does a VP from Google saying "I don't think we're going to do that" mean less than some random author giving his opinion? How often does Google give the details of their agreements? Especially for a device that hasn't been released yet.
Take the hate blinders off, man. You're getting beyond ridiculous.

Ars made an assumption based off what Burke said. Nothing definitive on how much of a delay will be caused. You also glazed over what Burke said about carriers being more efficient and faster with updates (knowing updates are what people want quickly). To be fair to Verizon as of late, they have been quicker with the process (e.g. Moto X)

Fast updates can be great but there's also a negative to it., e.g iOS update that killed reception on the iPhone 6. Carrier "interference" is not necessarily all about adding bloat to your phones.

I think declaring that the sky is falling is premature at this point. Unfortunately we won't know how the updates will go until it happens. Having a Nexus phone on all carriers is a relatively new thing. Give Google a chance to work it out.

Dude, the carriers are not going to use valuable resources testing a phone they don't officially support. Just because the phone works on a network doesn't mean it's officially supported.

By you're logic, AT&T also tests European GSM devices. A lot pf people buy them and use them in the US, so it has to be carrier tested. Right? The testing for unsupported devices is done by the manufacturer. I guess AT&T tested the OnePlus One?

And European devices always get up updated before US carrier devices. Always.

I'm done with you. Enjoy your carrier molested Nexus.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Don't care if the carrier versions have slightly delayed updates. They'll still be out quick because its still unskined android. I just want a damn Nexus on Verizon.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

Also via that Ars article, an interesting feature lollipop regarding bloatware:

" Setup in Lollipop is also taking on the responsibility of pre-installed carrier apps (aka crapware) with a new feature called "Play Auto Install." Rather than permanently storing carrier apps on the system partition, which currently is the only way to have apps persist across device wipes, Play Auto Install will download carrier apps during the setup process. This will put them in the data partition and allow them to be completely uninstalled by users. The download process then allows carriers to change the apps they would like to preload on a device without having to issue a system update. Pre-installed apps on carrier-controlled devices are never going to go away, but with Play Auto Install, Google is giving both sides more options. Everyone wins—assuming carriers stop installing things on the system partition."

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Yes, it should work like that.

I'm very very disappointed in Google for doing this. It makes a complete mockery of the whole 'one single model for all carriers'. Now carriers will be free to lock stuff, add bloatware, remove what they don't like etc.

In other words, it's no longer a Nexus if you buy it from them.

You might wanna take a break from speculating and wait for the actual facts to unfold before you get too carried away?

Google Nexus 6 Verizon and pre-ordering on Wednesday

Ok so I'm sure no one has any facts quite yet, but what are the ideas floating around behind buying the device on Wednesday from the Google Play store and being able to use it on Verizon's network? I plan on ordering it, but not wanting to go through a whole mess activating the device. I had some issues with my Note 3 when I had pre-ordered it. This isn't going to have any issues activating if I choose to do so like that, right? Please tell me I'm right because I've been waiting for this device since it was announced. Cheers guys! :)

The testing by networks are done prior of of the update being even announced by Apple, there is absolutely no reason why Google can't do this as well as long as the software remains the same. There is absolutely no proof at this point that the Nexus 6 will be "molested" by the carriers. If that remains then the updates could be rolled out much like Apple's. Again useless speculations will get us nowhere, wait for the facts to sink in.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

And here's why I think this...

Currently, AT&T sells the 2nd generation Moto X (the non Pure Edition phone) for $99 on contract. But, on their store web page it markets itself very interestingly/devilishly:

Key features include:
5.2” HD display
Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 quad-core processor
13MP camera with 4K capture
Pure Android™ experience
Moto voice control

Did you catch that? Yes, folks, this is what they are going to do with the Nexus 6 as well. If they can just throw around the label "Pure Android Experience", that means they think we are stupid and they will go ahead and put the pre-loaded (non-deletable) bloatware, locked bootloader, carrier start up splash screen, etc.

They will most likely have a Nexus 6 Pure Edition that sells only on the Google Play store for $624529789498249824

The title of "Nexus" would no longer mean anything.
Way too much time on your hand...........

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

I'm sure Samsung and the other OEMs and carriers consider their apps useful for the basic user too, but if it's software that doesn't come with a stock nexus device from the playstore it's bloat. Whether it's useful or not is just a matter of opinion. As an owner of a Verizon Gnex I personally would have rather they not put those two apps on there.
Fair enough, I also consider some of Google's apps a bloatware, as I never use them, and can't be deleted either.

Google Nexus 6 Bestbuy preorder

I believe tomorrow is just preorders on the play store out of contract..... I don't even think best buy list it as "Coming soon" yet.... or I have not seen a link on best buy for it yet..... I was watching Best Buy because I have some reward points I was going to use towards the device if they sold the unlocked version..

Also though I had seen something along the lines that the Verizon Nexus 6 was probably coming in December? Maybe I misread something or it was just a rumor..... I know T-Mobile said it will go on sale with them November 12....

Re: Bestbuy preorder

Why is the process so secretive? Im coming from a 5s and cant wait to get back to android, but it is a little frustrating not knowing what is actually going on.

That is also what I think. Tomorrow is only pre-orders for the play store and nothing else.
