Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

I was hoping that if I bought the N6 from T-Mobile it would get the Wi-Fi calling, but I'm not willing to put up with delayed updates.

Sprint bundled their update for enabling Sprint Spark with Android 4.4.3 on the Nexus 5 so T-Mobile might do something to that extent as well

Re: Will the Verizon version of Nexu 6 be an orphan when it comes to software updates?

The n5 does not work with vz, the difference is Sprint will load any n5 imei into their approved device database. So you can buy any n5 from play, call sprint, they will load the devices imei/esn, give you a Sim and you are all set.

This must be what vz has finally agreed to do with the n6. I can't see Google ever agreeing to do it the old way. At the end of the day the n6 is a niche product and vz is just one carrier, why blemish the entire platform and have a one-off in order to cater to one carrier, even if that carrier is vz?

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Who's to say the Nexus 5 didn't have delays? Let's say Google only announced the new os when it was cleared to be pushed? Moto x phones and HTC phones require testing and they seem to get software updates out pretty fast now on verizon. As Aaron Rodgers once said after getting beat by the Lions. Relax.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...talks-to-android-execs-about-the-upcoming-os/

Judging by Burke's statement, that's the way Google expects the majority of people will purchase the new phone. The last Nexus device to launch on a top-tier US carrier was the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, and that was constantly hamstrung by the carrier's interference. It blocked Google Wallet from the device to protect its competing mobile wallet solution, ISIS (now renamed "SoftCard"), which wouldn't hit the nationwide market until two years later. Updates were also constantly delayed, nullifying the best feature of the Nexus line and leaving customers feeling betrayed.

As such, we asked if history would repeat itself with these new carrier Nexus devices. "I don't think we're going to do that. There is carrier testing that has to happen—you can't get away from that—but we're trying to have our updates be frequent," Burke said. "I think the carriers are learning and realizing that's a feature they want. So I think these are getting more efficient and they're getting better at it."

So it sounds like carrier Nexus devices will lag behind the unlocked versions, as they will have an additional carrier testing step. The hope this year is that the carriers wise up and won't delay things too much, but the potential for a delay is there.

You're getting too excited about it. Bet the Nexus 5 had to do testing for sprint and Google just announced the updates when sprint was good to go. We'll never know.

You make a very good point. Earlier in the year Sprint was quick to announce 4.4.3 & then they removed it

Sprint Removes Mention Of The Android 4.4.3 Update For The Nexus 5 From Its Website, No Sign Of OTA Either

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

So "testing to make sure it works properly on their network" Is the same as "free to add bloatware, lock it up and do whatever they want to it"
Nahhh...that's not a leap in logic at all /s

The thing is, this is the first time Google has had a Nexus on all four networks. None of us know what that means. No matter what hopes or fears you may have, they're just that...hopes or fears. Nothing is definitive yet. But lets not let that stop the FUD

Yes, 'testing' is code word for all of that. How do you think the unlocked Play store version will work with updates - magic? If the phone is the same hardware, then the carrier version can also run the update on same day with zero issues.

The only reason to have a delay in carrier version is to mess with it. Give me one reason why the same phone bought from Play store can get updated but the one bought from carrier can't. That ONLY happens if the hardware or software are different.

I'm being alarmist but I've learnt nothing is too extreme when it comes to Verizon.

Any delay would be for issues on the network. I wouldn't go blaming software.

Who ever said there will be any delay? I'm missing the part where either Google or the carriers have said anything about any delay. All I see is something about testing...and carriers test software for all phones on their network. Nobody knows how the update schedule will work except Google and the carriers.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Who says apple pushes updates willy nilly? Maybe the carriers test it before the updates are announced? This is getting out of hand
They do.

Well in any case we will know soon. If it does happen to be delayed, you should still be able to get it faster than other OEMs. If not then maybe you should look to a GSM carrier OP.

It says right there in the linked article and my quote that carrier versions might have delays, it couldn't be more clear. Google tests updates for the phones they sell and then publish them on the servers. What we don't know is if carrier phones will get updates from Google or from the carriers. If latter, then there will be delays.

Re-read the article, buddy. Dave Burke from Google is quoted, then the author of the article says he thinks carrier versions will lag behind unlocked versions. But he doesn't know any more than you or I know. Yes its possible there will be delays, but its possible there won't. Anyone trying to say it will definitely be one way or the other is just being foolish.
Yes Google will test the updates, but then the carriers will test the updates. What we don't know is at what point that will happen. Maybe all carriers will certify the update and then Google will push it, or maybe the carriers will each certify and push it on their own. We just don't know. That's my whole point, we don't know.

The testing is what delays the updates for months. Yes, months. Whether or not that holds true for the Nexus is yet to be seen. I'm not taking the chance.

I hate to tell you, but there will be carrier testing no matter what phone you get. No carrier will let a phone on their network without testing the software for it. So if you're ever going to have a phone on a network then you are taking the chance.

So what? The Play Store version also gets tested, of course. What we're talking about, what Ars made a point to ask, is whether the carrier version will have *additional* delays, and the answer was they might. These delays can be months. They can involve modifying the software. If the update doesn't come the same day as the Play Store version, then that's a problem.

No joke Sherlock. That's why I won't be buying a carrier branded Nexus. 😆

You misunderstood...ummm...obviously not Sherlock...ANY phone, carrier branded Nexus, Nexus straight from the Play Store, Note 4, Moto G Google Play Edition, iPhone 6...any phone you get...I repeat....ANY PHONE YOU GET...if it works on a network, it will be tested by that network. The only way to get around that is to not have a phone.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

You know, when an iOS update comes out, every single supported iPhone can grab it within minutes. That's the true meaning of 'one model'. Not this nonsense about 'carriers need to test this, there may be delays etc etc'. This is total bs. iPhone runs on multiple carriers and its updates are also tested, but when Apple has an update, it doesn't matter where you bought the phone or how. You get the update.

This is basically what everyone was afraid of.

It's tested on every carrier first. You're missing that whole concept.

WRONG! The carrier branded devices go through extra months of testing. That's why the European devices get updates from all OEMS months before we get them here in the US. Will this happen for the Nexus? We shall see.
