[How-to] Guide to Rooting with software version LS670ZVC

I just got my phone yestreday, and they required the OTA update as part of the Sprint ID profile activation. I knew from reading this was bad for my rooting intentions, but what else could I do?

Why is it that an open-source platform is being locked down by vendors.. what the hell? Make me so mad.. grrr.

I wish google would have required developer access to devices in the general licensing terms. Somebody please help the rest of us who just got onboard with VC.

You can update with the LG update tool without even going through the initial setup. But yes you should not install the OTA update just yet.

so i guess i'll find out tomorrow if sprint is shipping the new and refrub devices with vc on them. should i assume if they are coming with vc, they are ota updated and not the lg tool?

have to say... I'm glad I read this... while I haven't rooted my wife's phone, having the option seems like a GOOD idea... (and I'd intended on letting her phone just update via OTA... now I'm taking matters in hand and am updating via the LG tool...)

*whew* bullet dodged...

Have to say that it is really obnoxious that they're making mods so difficult - here I'd thought LG was a cool vendor, and now I'm not so certain... (Though this hardware seems pretty decent though for what I paid for it)

how do you knoe if u used an OTA update instead of lg updater

did you plug your phone into a computer and run a software you download from LG's website, or did you download the update over the air directly to your phone and let your phone apply it?

Answer that and you have your answer although I'm willing to bet that anyone that asks did OTA though because otherwise you'd need to specifically go to LG's website to download their software to plug in your phone with the specific purpose of updating.

Real PITA they are making this. Kind of frustrating because these are cool cheap phones.

Well, you'd have to explicitly download the LG updater so if you haven't done that, then you didn't use it. If your version says VC, then the only other way you could have gotten it is OTA, either automatically or manually downloading and renaming it to update.zip.

k... wife's phone's able to be modded - if I ever decide to enter the pain involved with altering her phone... ;)

No root for you at the moment. There MAY be a way to force flash V9 but that hasn't been confirmed yet AFAIK.

Yeah I don't think there is currently a way to force flash V9. I spent ALL day trying different things to no avail. I have officially thrown my hands in the air and given up. Waiting for some Optimus genius to figure this one out. Hell I'd almost rather have a brick cause at least I could swap that for a refurb and start over :/

What makes you think a refurb wouldn't have VC from the factory? :(

They probably don't right now, but eventually they will.

hey whats the error people are getting when trying to flash update.zip? I know this is an expected error I'm just curious what SPECIFICALLY the error is. Thanks.

I can confirm the refurbs don't have VC for the moment, as I had to take my mother's optimus in for replacement today... I didn't even get to try to root it and the OTA update bricked her 100% stock phone.

But yes the refurbs will soon have VC I would imagine.

wish I'd known it was of interest... (not sure I'm excited to play with it again... ;)

Lol ya thats my point....could have grabbed one before the update was on a refurb. Like I said though I'd ALMOST rather have a brick....they'll figure out how to root this phone again eventually. Just trying to be patient which is definitely not one of my strong points :)

I will be working on a more complete guide with all those steps, I just wanted to get something up now so people who HAD root before can have root once again.

Hey drew i just updated my phone through Lgs updater and since i barely know about this if you could help out.
When are you going to make that NEWBIE guide? I really need it :)

PS: Good job on rooting it the first day it came out congrats :)

PS2: can you put download links and stuff to download sdk tools and stuff on the newbie guide? Thanks again :) really looking forward to this :D

The only thing you need now is the Android SDK, available here. Once that's installed and working, follow the guide from the top. If it helps, you can simply copy and paste the commands directly from the guide to prevent mistakes. Your environment must be set up correctly for this to work. Follow the guide from the top, and you should have a rooted phone in no time.

EDIT: And as for rooting the day it came out, zefie deserves the credit for that one. I just performed some beautification/clarification to his method.
