Is the rolling back process causing bricks, or just not working?

The only real method I've seen to roll back is the KDZ method which fails.

If you're getting a new phone from sprint though you can use the LG update tool to push the VC update before activating the phone though. Of course thats only if the update isn't applied already.

to roll back, you will need root access.

should be picking mine up from the store shortly.

Being that the OTA process is/was still in its roll out phase I hope they didnt take the opportunity to update them for us! I guess we wait and see, UPS comes around here from now to 4 pm. I will let you know what version I get.

I wonder if the people over at the sprint store have some way to reset the phone to factory. I consider myself a fairly smooth talker so if they have a way I'll get em to do it....that or maybe I can trade my perfectly fine brand new phone for a refurb lol.

lol i'm hoping it doesn't come vc preinstalled for us. i figure if it does, that gives us a little more incentive to find a root method i guess lol.

they can reset the phone to factory in store. simply boot to recovery and wipe device. don't need a store to do that. is that what your wondering?

Well yes while that is exactly what I'm wondering does that factory wipe/reset restore it to the original software without the VC update? I wouldn't think so...otherwise I would have done that already.

You are correct, wipe/reset doesn't restore it to original software. In fact it doesn't even restore /system (ie your root is permanent until you do something that affects /system, like an OTA update) Also the OTA update only wipes the cache, and leaves /data alone. Still had rageagainstthecage in /data/local/tmp after the VC update.

any way to use that to our advantage? do the permissions change or anything like that when the ota is applied?

Like zman519 I have a stock Optimus S with V9 that was rooted via z4root. No other customizations were applied to the phone. I want to upgrade this phone to VC and then obtain root access. I understand that I have to use the LGMobile update tool to apply the VC update, but do I have to go through the steps in zeflie's "how-unroot-your-phone-return-stock" thread to restore V8, upgrade to V9 and then upgrade to VC?
Can I just use the LGMobile update tool to apply the VC update on a stock V9 then follow the instructions on the first post of this thread to obtain root access?

I think things are mounted in a way so files on the /data partition cannot do setuid, but I didn't try that hard, so if you want to pursue that, go for it. I know if I run rage, then the first time it does what is expected in that it kills the ADB server on the phone and kicks you out of shell, but when you log back in, you are still at the "$" prompt, meaning no root. The second time you run it, the ADB server doesn't come back and you get the device not found error.

Of course, neither option would work if the VC recovery is unwilling to flash a VC update.zip overtop of it's self. My preference though would be a roll back to V9 while keeping VC radio though cause then then Z4 would work.
I didn't try VC to VC update.zip, but the V9 update was able to run a second time.

It is possible the VC update.zip would do the same.

I think if you can find a way to replace stuff in an update.zip, replacing the recovery partition in the VC update with the V9 one would be simplest.

Rooted my Pops Optimus S using Z4; he uses wireless tether for his laptop, and this morning he accepted an OTA that killed Root access. Any help would be appreciated.

VC to VC update DOES work! Just tried and runs the installation just like normal, reboots and works like a charm.

Wireless tether works without root.

There isn't currently a way to undo the OTA update, so you won't be able to root (but will be able to tether)

So if a VC to VC update works then maybe there is some way to force the LG tool to update over the current OVA update, thus hopefully negating the damage the OVA did.

I haven't checked that but I would be willing to bet the LG tool does version checks and probably hash checks as well.

What about yanking out the update zip file from the LG tool and then flashing that using stock recovery? Is it possible to acquire the update file itself in flashable form like it was for the OTA update?

I have to tried to use wireless tether after the OTA update from Sprint and to no avail, Which is on my Fathers Optimus S. I myself have an Evo 4G and also have wireless tether which needs root access to function. I used unrevoked and never do OTA updates. My question is, how do I run wireless tether on the Optimus S without being rooted??
