[How-to] Guide to Rooting with software version LS670ZVC

So obviously mine is different. Where did you get yours DCJoe? I got mine from the KDZ thread. Can you post a link?

Also I will say that when I first updated to VC using the update.zip method I was getting the $ prompt returned no problem. It wasn't until I came to work and tried again that I got the device not found error.

I'm lost, and forgive me because i was at work all day so it's hard to keep up with every post but .... what's trying to be accomplished? I see people running sums and stuff, whats the end result you're looking for?

Are people still working at my idea of an update.zip?

We found a tool from the LG Ally thread that will actually force flash *.cab (older firmware versions).

This is doing what people on the KDZ were having trouble doing.

It worked for one person, and another person had trouble extracting the file, so we compared checksums and found the .cab files were different.

I already have Zefie's downloaded (links in the following post for your convenience)

The checksum matches DCJoe's

KSmith, short story is that I was able to force flash my OTA VC updated phone with V9 using the command line version of kdz tool. I then used the LG Mobile support tool to update to VC. But I still can't root it, and am worried that the force flash didn't overwrite the recovery, just the rom.

gotcha, very interesting idea. It's frustrating all this "well it works for 1 person but not another" stuff going on. Certainly doesn't make the job any easier.

Okay, last post before I go: looks like the 10% chance was right: it's Zefie's download that I force flashed. Anyone have any idea how to check the version of the recovery? Gotta go.....

Actually, I am in the reserve situation- at work and spent the last couple of hours on this, and need to go home, eat, family, etc, so it won't be until probably 9 that I will be able to pick back up.
Have you ever been able to root? Let's say on V9?

Thats a start, i need to think a bit because this is a puzzle. I do puzzles better with a couple drinks in me :)

Ok, I drank some for myself and KSmith.

Try doing this. Force flash V9 using KP500 again. Then root it, then manually flash the V9 recovery partition, then use the LG Update tool to download VC. If your theory is correct and the *.cab firmware updates are leaving the recovery partition alone (seems plausible given the VC root exploit on post #1)

I'll create a zip file with flash_image and the v9 recovery for you to try and attach it in a second.

So it turns out I can't upload a file that large. The v9 recovery image is already in the "How to unroot" thread:

The zip file that includes it is here:
http://files.mysticmidnight.net/zefie/files/cell/LG670/roms/nandroid-thunderc-V8-STOCK.zip

Instructions are here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-...45403-how-unroot-your-phone-return-stock.html

Basically once you force flash V9, you can root using the standard method.

Next, on the assumption you are still stuck with VC recovery partition even though you force flashed V9, manually flash the V9 recovery partition.

Extract the nandroid backup in the zip link above and follow the directions to flash the v9 recovery partition by hand.

28) cd /sdcard/nandroid/mem=477M/BCDMRS12-20101122-1915
29) flash_image recovery recovery.img

Yes, my phone was fully rooted and on Lego Rom up until Wednesday when I nandroided back to v8, upgraded to v9, unrooted and switched back to stock recovery, and let the OTA update run. I wouldn't have done all that, obviously, if I knew that the OTA update couldn't actually be rooted.

I like the way you guys are thinking so keep on that path certainly, the more heads working towards a common goal the higher the success rate. With that said .... I still think theres other avenues that need to be pursued at the same time so we can either validate some stuff or maybe even eliminate some stuff. I don't like being single threaded and we'd all kick our selfs in the butt if an easier way exists, we talk about it, but never tried it.

I need someone who:
1) is on VC
2) Can't root (you've tried and tried and tried)
3) Has insurance. Here's a shocker ... when you do stuff like this, theres a chance you break your phone! This week alone a very good friend of mine who's also a developer(name withheld (you know who you are :p )) has bricked 2 phones ... THIS WEEK! We were not playing with root, it was an unrelated project but my point is, you must be willing to take 1 for the team because we developers do it more often than you'd believe. It's easier to take one on the chin if you have insurance. If this statement concerns you, sit back and wait and theres nothing wrong with that, but if you'd like to help us help you .... here's your chance.

I think point 3 covers it but I, Androidcentral, Android Developers are not responsible for your phone, you are. While most of us try to be as careful as possible, stuff happens.

HERE IS A LINK TO AN UPDATE.ZIP. This should be plain jane VC. I want to verify 2 things:
a) Does it flash? If not i need to know EXACTLY what your screen says. I need as much detail as possible. No detail is to big or to small.
b) If it does flash, please, re-try rooting. Not through the ROM, use the method described in post#1 of this thread (the recovery root method)

Looking forward to some feedback :)

If you are saying this is an untouched VC update.zip, then we verified that they will run again earlier in the thread in response to your earlier suggestion (but probably got drowned out in latest excitement)

I verified V9 update.zip will run multiple times:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-...-software-version-ls670zvc-18.html#post600624

KingDavid verified VC update.zip will run multiple times:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-...-software-version-ls670zvc-18.html#post600655

Now if you've made some change to the VC update.zip then that is a different story, but from your wording it didn't seem like this file had changes (plain jane VC)

Also it almost makes sense to have a volunteer for each method being tried (the other method has one). Theres no need to have 30 people trying each way of doing it.

So ... if you're the person following what I'm trying to do and willing to work with me, let it be known in the forum then I'll PM you.

Our files may or may not be different. I think as you guys are finding out with the other method, stuff inexplicably varies.

If someone verifies the one i posted works, I'm going to use that as a base to further my work :)

As stated I did verify a VC to VC update will run. I just tried to root using the method in post 1 and I still get the device not found error.
