not sure what i did but...i got it to boot and i still have root....

i was reading thru some stuff here and found a similar problem...
tried an alternate method to boot into recovery
volume_up + home + power and released and pressed volume_down when the lg splash went a way... nothing happened for a couple min but i could tell it was still powered on. removed the battery and cable and tried the same thing again...this time it went straight to the sprint splash after the lg slash and booted normally...

i'm gonna post up in the custom recovery thread that i was using, finish the recovery install properly and try and find an answer as to what i did...

sorry about the off-topic ness....had a bunch of tabs open and thought i was in a different thread when i originally posted my screw-up.

ahh just a heads up, I didnt read through the thread, but as per the other rooting guide:

When ADB restarts, make sure it actually ends in the windows task manager. That was my problem initially when i first rooted (pre update).

Im on windows 7 (Ctrl+alt+del -->start task manager-->process--> kill adb)

This prevented me from getting root

Ok. I can get all the way to step Q. The updater will open but it still completes the task within a minute or so. I have the full read out saved from the updater, but the first couple of lines may be telling me what's going on, I'm just not sure what to do next.

As drew mentioned, turn on your phone and make sure it isn't in a screen saver.

When you type "su" you should see a prompt on your screen asking for root permission. Choose to allow root privileges for su. If you have SuperUser.apk properly installed, it'll remember your answer and use it next time, so you won't have to respond to the prompt.

If you want to end the adb background process on the pc, you can also type

adb kill-server

on the windows command line. This will allow the process to gracefully exit, though I haven't seen any ill effects of killing it from windows.

Those are expected "errors". It is removing temp directories from previous runs, which may or may not be there. If you could post the end of your log file, that would be more useful.

You were very close to getting the flash working in your previous post. You only had the file extraction error. I've seen that happen for seemingly no obvious reason on about 1 out of 10 flashes (doesn't break your flash, it just doesn't start the flash at all) and the rest of the time it is attributed to a corrupt or incomplete cab file, which can be ruled out by comparing the checksum of the cab file (step E in the instructions)

Thanks go out to cordell, DCJoe, KingDavidBaker for suggesting this method and working through the procedures, KSmithInNY for comments making this more readable and of course zefie for his unroot procedure and archive of the firmware cabs.

High level summary
1) Install the LG Software Updater Tool (link to LG Software Updater Tool) - the KP500 tool below uses LG Software Updater to write the firmware to your phone
2) Force flash the V9 firmware using the KP500 tool (see below)
3) Follow the "How to Unroot" thread
(start from step 1, it will tell you how to revert to V8, restore the pre-VC recovery partition and upgrade to any version you want from there, if you are an advanced user, you can skip some steps and do the alternate procedure in the reference section)

So, how can we unroot the phone using the "su" command (step 9) with an unrooted phone?

After Step (u) in the reverting post, you have the V9 OS flashed. At this point, you can do one-click root by using z4root.apk.

You only need to go through the subsequent steps if you want to have root with the VC OS and VC Radio.

I clarified the instructions to make it clearer, that you can just stay at V9 if you want and Step (v) is optional.

Reverting your firmware to V9 (ie up to step u) only gets you the V9 OS and V9 Radio.

It doesn't revert your Recovery partition to V9. That is the key to getting root working with VC. You need to do step (v) to get the V9 Recovery partition. If you are a more expert user, you can use the advanced instructions in the Reference section, but I didn't go into details listing the commands.

Basically once you are done with step (u), to get root with VC you need to accomplish 3 things
1) restore the V9 recovery partition
2) install the VC update using the LG Software Updater tool
3) follow the instructions in the first post of this thread

1&2 will get done as a consequence of the "unroot" thread steps, but if you are an expert, you can just restore the V9 recovery partition by hand and just do 2&3.

You downloaded the KP500 zip file right?

When you unzip that file, you would have placed the KP500-Utils-EN-v0.4.2 folder somewhere. Let's say you put it in C:\KP500-Utils-EN-v0.4.2

Open up a command prompt

start menu->run
cmd.exe

Change current folder/directory to the one containing KP500

C:
cd \KP500-Utils-EN-v0.4.2

Make sure you have placed the V9 cab file in the same folder/directory as above

Start the KP500 utility

KP500-Utils-EN.exe

Try just opening the folder and double-clicking on KP500-Utils-EN.exe

It should run that way also.

ok that worked started going through the procedure and got the message from lg that says

Updating is not possible any longer due to fatal error while the lg mobile phone software update

After which step did you get that message? Is there a log file output you could include? If there is no extra info, try rebooting your PC and the phone.

You are seeing the file extract error. It is almost ready to flash.

I saw that error once in 10 flashes just randomly and I just restarted the process and the 2nd time around it extracted fine.

However it could also be caused by corrupted or incomplete cab file download. I provided an optional step (e) to verify the checksum.

Personally I would just try reentering the information into KP500 to go one more round and see if it clears up by itself. If not, reboot PC and phone and try again.

If that all fails, run a checksum on your cab file and see if it matches.

PS do you have at least 600MB free space on your C: drive? The file it is unpacking can get quite large.

For fsum, you actually need to run it from a command prompt.

If you don't give it any parameters, it'll just run and exit (flash on for a split second)
