[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm upgrading my 3g UDP phone to a new 4g phone. When it comes time to activate the new 4g phone on my line I'd need to go to a Verizon store and get a new SIM card, correct?
not necessarily. Are you on a family plan? If so, are you using an UDP line's upgrade to upgrade? Do you have any basic phone lines on your family plan? Give us the details.

I'm on a family plan. 2 smart phones with unlimited data and 2 dumb phones. All lines are eligible for upgrades but I will be using a dumb phone's upgrade. I'll activate new phone on dumb phone line and then reactivate dumb phone to free up the new phone. In order to activate new phone on UDP line, will I need to get a new SIM card or can I just reuse the one that will come with the new phone?

you can just reuse the one that came with the phone after you have activated it on the dumb phone line.

There is NO danger of losing your UDP if you use an upgrade that originates on a dumb phone line. It is only when you use upgrades that originate on an UDP line that you have to worry.

I thought that by transferring the upgrade to a dumb phone line, this wasn't an issue?

Thanks for the quick responses. I don't have any experience with SIM cards and thought they were tied to a single phone number. Good to know I can just reuse the SIM card that'll come with the new phone.

You can log on to myVerizon and move the phone using the sim card that comes with it. You will just need the numbers on the sim card.

yes, but he isn't transferring an upgrade. He is using a dumbphone's upgrade and I just wanted to reassure him it would be fine.

OK. It sounded like transferring an upgrade from an UD line to a dumb phone could cause problems, which didn't make sense to me.

the only time it could cause problems is if you transferred the upgrade from the UDP line to the dumbphone line and then first activated the phone on the UDP line. However, people here have said they have done that and it hasn't been a problem for their UDP line. I have never done that and would not try it myself because it is not a big deal to activate the phone first on the dumbphone line so why risk it.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Wow.. I may have to try this.. I want a note 3 and didn't feel like paying so much money for it.. Or maybe I should wait and try to use it for the S5?

Do you want a phablet or not? If you want a phablet get the GNote3. If not, wait for the GS5. A phablet is a very different user experience from a regular smartphone.

If you do try this method, please report back your results so we all will know if the method is working. Thanks!

This glitch may or may not be available when the S5 is launched, you can upgrade to the note 3 now and when the S5 comes out, buy it off contact and sell the note 3

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Ok I bought the Note 3 from BB online. I then ended up selling my gs3. I then activated an old iphone 4 until my phone came in. Just to let you know, bb puts restrictions on ups when its delivered. They need a signature. A note on the door will not work. Also if you miss the delivery you cant go to ups and pick it up. Thats the bb restriction. I called bb and spoke with a rep for 40 min to get this restriction removed so I could pick it up but it couldn't be done. Only after a 3rd attempt is made can you go pick it up. Kinda stupid considering most people work while ups is delivering.

Finally get the phone and put in my sim from my gs3. It said my phone is activated. I then tried to make a call and got a prompt that said my number was not in service and to call customer service. No way was doing that so I went online to activate it. Got an error saying that there has been a change in my service so I cant activate a phone online.
Ok on to plan C. Started a chat session. Proceed to tell the agent that i wasn't able to activate my phone online and was very aggravated. He told me it was because I didnt have a sim card in the phone and then asked if one came with it and wanted the sim number. So I told him I used my old sim card and gave him that number. He said to give him a few minutes to bring it up. Then he told me to start the phone. I seen the 4g lte signal and was happy. that was at about 2:45 eastern time. I have been checking vmobile every hour and i still says unlimited. Sorry this was so long but I hope it helps.

I just realized, if I did that, wouldn't I have to pay a ETF fee?

No. You only pay an ETF if you cancel your line while still under contract.

Now, most all of the 3rd party retailers impose a secondary ETF if you downgrade the data plan in less than 181 days, but that has nothing to do with which phone is on the line. And Best Buy and Costco don't even charge a secondary ETF even if you do that. Neither does Verizon.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Kinda afraid to try this still...who else wants to it? lol

also, too many dang choices for phones!! I keep changing my mind on what I want (Note 3, HTC One MAX, or Moto X), I see no point in getting the S4

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

UPDATE: I got my 5s I ordered from BB online. I put my old sim from my 5 into the new 5s and it activated within seconds. Online still shows unlimited and contract date has been extended. Will check online daily for a couple weeks to make sure unlimited is still there. Thanks all for the help.
