I keep changing my mind on what I want (Note 3, HTC One MAX, or Moto X), I see no point in getting the S4

because of all the sales, you can get the Moto X for a good price gently used. I would get the GNote3 if you want a phablet and get a used Moto X as a second device.

Ok, so I just ordered an S4 from BB, to be shipped. I decided to upgrade one of our basic phones instead of my unlimited line.

Should I try to activate it on my line initially, with my old Sim card, or do the activation on the basic line, then do the switcheroo?

If you do the former, you may end up with the pending update problem. To be safe, I would do the latter.

I just finished everything last night with upgrading my phone on another line first, then moving it to my line with a brand new SIM. I didn't even use the SIM the phone came with. I went online and my phone that I transferred the upgrade to still have unlimited data, and the contract hasn't been extended. None of the contracts were extended, but I did accept the user agreement that you had to before 14 days.
Maybe the system didn't catch the contract renewal because I didn't use the SIM the phone came with?
Or might it have been because I did it all online and didn't use the 1-877#?

Hypothetical question. Let's say I use a dumb phone upgrade to buy a new phone. Instead of activating it first on the dumb phone line, I'd sell. Would the buyer be at risk for losing his udp?

I now have 4 lines. 2 smartphones (5c and 5s) that were just upgraded. Do to a loophole with best buy I was able to keep my unlimited data on those 2 lines (I won't be able to use that loophole again). I just added 2 more lines to my plan as you know and I got the Moto X and a another 5c which I'm selling. There are basic phones now on those 2 new lines.

Will I be able to somehow keep my unlimited data when all 4 are due for upgrades? Is there any way to do this? Or will I lose my unlimited unless I add a 5th line and use that new phone on one of my 4 lines?

I have an individual UDP which is on month to month, but I already own the note 3 which I paid full price on its release date. Hopefully when a new phone comes out this is still working.

i guess before I do this I should double check I won't screw anything up..

I am on my dad's plan (cause of my unlimited data), and it's cheaper, I just pay him. He's got a dumbphone, and my mom has an iphone but on the 2GB data plan since she got hers after they wiped out unlimited. I know my line is eligable for an upgrade, so doing it this way won't affect anything else and I should still be able to keep my unlimited by just using my sim card from my S3 itno whatever phone I decide to get, correct?

I don't think the buyer would be able to activate the phone on a different account. And your account would show pending activation and I am not sure what Verizon would do if you told them you sold the phone without activating it first on your account.

I would assume (and all the warnings that go with that word) that they would be able to activate it as long as you didn't report it as stolen. The activation should clear out eventually or you could probably call and clear it. All assumptions of course.

That is the part I am not sure of. The account the device was ordered on would have a pending activation on it. Would it clear out eventually and if not, would Verizon care if you told them to clear it out because you gave the phone to someone else?

I would call and ask Verizon if you are allowed to get a subsidized phone and activate it for the first time on a different account and see what they say. You might be able to but I would also ask them how would the pending activation clear from my account.

They have to be able to clear it..... The only problem with calling is just like if you ask about transferring upgrades and keeping unlimited. You never know what you will get. I would call back and ask a few times.

other people are reporting their results so keep reading here and see what they say. I have never done it this way only the other way so all I can do is read here, too. Hopefully more people can post screen shots and we can all be reassured this works consistently and wasn't some sort of fluke.

Please post a screen shot if you do it. It is easy to black out your identifying information. If you need help with that just ask.

I agree, but they also have the ability to boot IMEIs out of their database since they are CDMA. I don't know if they would do anything like that, but you would have to find out if they have a problem with buying a subsidized phone on one account and then first activating it on another. They may not.

And ITA with your comment about calling several times if you are going to do this because some reps know what they are talking about and others don't.

That is correct.

But of course, then you will need to activate the new smartphone on the dumbphone line, pick the 2GB data plan, then put the dumbphone back on the line and drop the data plan and then reactivate the new smartphone on your UDP line. It is all outlined in that thread I linked to above.

In addition, every 2 years you will get upgrades on the dumbphone lines, also. I suggest you use those upgrades to purchase new iPhones and sell the new iPhones to recoup the costs of the dumbphone lines. As you and I are now aware, Apple can limit the number of iPhones you can purchase so keep that in mind when you do. You may have to wait to use a dumbphone upgrade due to the limits. Or perhaps you can just use your parent's credit card to do the purchase of 1 of the iPhones and then pay them back. I would not buy an Android phone to resell due to the fact that the Androids do not have as high of a resale value as the iPhones.
