[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think they are counting on the extra data plan fee's. If you change to a dumb phone it will drop to basic $10/mo. I think Amazon will charge ETF if you switch it. Some have discussed it deep in this thread somewhere. I think the places that don't charge ETF are Costco, Best Buy and Verizon.

Right, but what if the non-UDP line is not a dumbphone, but is already a phone with tiered data? In that case, switching the new phone off that line wouldn't change any of the data plan fees. I guess it depends on what Amazon means by "not alter the line of service type". If I upgrade the non-UDP line to a Galaxy S5, and then immediately switch it back to the iPhone 5S that was on there previously, does that count as altering the service type? After all, it's still a $30/month 2GB data plan.

I feel like this is worth pursuing because the new GS5 is only $100 on Amazon, but it's $200 on Best Buy and Verizon. (Really it's $250 on Verizon, but includes a $50 mail-in rebate that I believe I would still qualify for even if I don't activate the phone on that line -- someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that)

Guess you'd have to check with Amazon. I've never ordered a phone through Amazon before only through Verizon. Perhaps somebody else with experience with Amazon would share their experience.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

For the people who don't have NFC LTE SIM and don't want to call Verizon for a SIM, try this. On "My Verizon" app, go to " Device " tap on "Order NFC SIM". It is free with 2 day shipping. I don't know if it works on the website as I have not check.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I was able to buy an M8 through BestBuy.com, trim the SIM card from my GNex, and it worked perfectly. But now I have a question. I have to send my M8 to HTC for repairs, and now my SIM is cut, not allowing me to put it back in my GNex for temporary use. What can I do to not jeopardize losing my udp?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Yes this is possible. There's a way to do this on the site but I can't post links here yet.

If you go to support > FAQs > NFC SE SIM Card FAQs there is an explanation of how to order this.

Go to a Verizon store and tell them that you damaged your sim and you need another one for your gnex because your current phone is out for repair. They should be able to replace it. When the m8 comes back tell them you got it back and need a new sim for the m8.

You could buy an adapter from Amazon. They are a couple bucks. I don't know how well they work either.

Try going to this ISIS website and order a SIM. The link will have you log into your Verizon account and order a free SIM:

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Some of the confusion stems from there being two main methods, this tread describes the Verizon transfer upgrade to tiered data or basic phone line to order the upgrade then putting the new phone on the UDP line. The Best Buy method is on this tread and more dependent on swapping SIMS

Methods for the Verizon transfer upgrade method are:

One Smart phone with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 dumb phone

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 dumb phone (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone with upgrade and Tiered data phone
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 Tiered Data

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using transferred upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone and Tiered data phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 Tiered Data (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

You can do similar strategies with Best Buy phones but one poster said the pending plan didn't drop off the basic phone line (5 days) so if you do this with a Best Buy phone it might be better to do the method described by the OP to first activate the phone on the basic phone line, put the basic phone back on it then activate the new phone on the UDP line. Or who knows maybe if they waited longer it would have fallen off from BB too but it started charging him Data which is different than Verizon so not sure.

Ok, I've been reading through all the different threads and I appreciate all of the information that folks have added, but I'm getting my self rather confused.

I have this situation:
UDP phone with upgrade and Tiered data phone
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 Tiered Data

Can it really be just as simple as doing the following:
Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
Order smartphone using transferred upgrade on Line2, select data plan
Activate smartphone on Line1
Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

I don't have to first activate the new phone on line2 or swap sim cards? The current unlimited phone on line 1 is a Droid 2 and so I don't already have a sim card that can be swapped with new phone. I see that I can request a new LTE sim card from VZW but I'm unsure at what step I would put new sim card in new phone if I need to swap sim cards.

Go to a Verizon store and tell them that you damaged your sim and you need another one for your gnex because your current phone is out for repair. They should be able to replace it. When the m8 comes back tell them you got it back and need a new sim for the m8.

And I won't lose my udp by doing this?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I have a UDP line and was going to transfer my upgrade to a 2gb line on my family plan. I know the LG G3 isn't available for shipping from Best Buy, but in my situation would I be able to activate that phone on the line in store and then go home and switch it to my UDP line?

Only potential issue is the 2gb line currently has an iPhone 4 on it, so I don't believe it has a Sim card. When I go to the store, they would be giving a new Sim card for the G3, so I'm not sure if that messes it up or not.

Any thoughts would be very helpful!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Over on slickdeals.net some people are having problems with the best buy method. Has anyone here had any problems in the past couple days.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

One reported saying he lost unlimited(switched to 2gb) after placing the order through bb and said no contact was made with bb or verizon after he ordered. The second person said the active sim on the old sim did not work on the new phone he ordered but it also stopped working on the old phone?

Thanks! Has anyone reported that they had success recently on there?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Well I got a success story but that was from last week lol I guess that isn't recent enough. These guys are reporting from today and we need a story that is a success from today on to prove this loophole still is there.

If you purchase from Verizon you could do that and just do that (activate directly on your UDP line) using the SIM that comes with the phone. Just activated it as a new device never before on your account. You log onto the Verizon website, select change device for your UDP line, it will as for number on SIM and the MEID of the phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just did this. I ordered a S5 on the dumb line, got it, activated on dumb line, then just switched the phones to my UDP line using the "switch device" button.

I had a bit of trouble putting dummy line back on as it keep adding a data plan. Had to call CS and have them remove the data plan...now I have S5 on unlimited data line (contract was not extended) and a basic plan with the contract extended 2 years. If you follow the directions here, it is no problem. Thanks.

EDIT: I went from a Droid X to a GS5 and I did not need to change sims or get a new sim...

So you did transfer upgrade from UDP line to tired days. And you still have your upgrade?
