[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1) Order a nano-SIM card by calling Verizon and having one shipped to you
2) Order the new iPhone from Best Buy using the upgrade on your line.
3) When the new phone arrives, do not turn it on or plug it in, remove the SIM card that ships with the phone and destroy it
4) Log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device
5) If you are asked do you want to activate or verify the phone that just shipped to you, click on "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page"
6) Click you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before
7) Type in the IMEI of the device and SIM card number of the SIM card you ordered in Step 1
8) Continue to follow the instructions

If you run into problems, just let the forum know and we can help. If you decide to add your parents to your plan, there is a different method you can do (though the above one should still work).

Ok so I called Verizon and they said since I have a 4s their computer won't let them send me a nano SIM card. My husband has a iPhone 6... Can I get sim under his acct without it messing him up?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can get an S6 right now if you want and then get the second one in May. Just do the following:

1.) Transfer your upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1 (using either Best Buy or Verizon)
2.) Order the S6 and have it shipped to home using the upgrade that is now on Line 1
3.) When the S6 arrives, follow the activation instructions so that it activates on Line 1
4.) Wait at least an hour and test to make sure that calls, texts, and data all work
5.) Now deactivate the S6, reactivate the DNA on Line 1, and move the S6 onto Line 2 (all done at Verizon's website)

Then in May, you can upgrade Line 1 using its upgrade that becomes available. When you transfer an upgrade, you will be extending the contract on Line 2 and not Line 1. This is why the upgrade will still become available.
Good to know:) I've always been Leary of transferring an upgrade because I thought it would extend because of the transfer. Thanks!

Yes. It really doesn't matter how you get a nano SIM, but that would definitely work. The steps I provided cause the SIM to be reprogrammed to your unlimited data plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So here is my current situation:
I plan on ordering the Galaxy S6
Nationwide Talk and Text Share 700 Plan
--
L1: iPhone 6+ with TDP - NO UPGRADE
L2: Samsung Galaxy S4 - UPGRADE
L3 AND L4 are basic lines
--
So I want to confirm that I first transfer the upgrade from L2 to L1 via either Best Buy or Verizon. Activate the Galaxy s6 on L1 for an hour and make sure text, talk, and data works. Then just activate the iPhone 6+ back on Line 1 and activate the Galaxy S6 on L2. I don't have to swap any sims or anything right? Thank you in advance!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, is it all possible to upgrade/keep UDP two lines when you only have two lines and doing it so you don't need to open a new line?

My situation:
Nationwide Talk Share
Line 1: iPhone 4. Month to month. Unlimited data. Want to upgrade to Galaxy S5
Line 1: iPhone 4. Month to month. Unlimited data. Want to upgrade to iPhone 6

Both have upgrade available.

Thanks in advance.

Your plan is correct. Just make sure to have the phone shipped to home and don't do it in-store. When you go to activate it on the tiered line, Verizon's system may have you swap SIMs because both the 6+ and S6 use nano-SIMs. Other than that, you are all set.

Absolutely. You'll need to make two separate orders (i.e. keep them individual plans rather than a More Everything), but it can be done through Verizon. Just do the following:

1.) Through Verizon online, order the S5 using the opposite line's upgrade (in this case Line 2) and have it shipped to home.
2.) After the first order is submitted, order the iPhone using Line 1's upgrade and have it shipped to home
3.) When the new phones arrive, do not turn them on. Instead, log onto Verizon and click "activate or switch a device"
4.) Select Line 2 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page"
5.) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI and SIM card numbers that were shipped with the iPhone and follow the directions to activate
6.) Then click activate or switch a device, select Line 1 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";
7.) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI and SIM card numbers of the S5 and follow the directions to activate Line 1's new phone on Line 1.

The big thing to remember is that you order the phone you want using the opposite line's upgrade. You will have pending activations on both lines for a couple of months, so make sure that you will not need to modify your plan in any way.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You guys the recently helped me out getting my nexus 6 and I thank you for that. Now my issue is that my Nexus 6 has been removed from the total protection insurance (Asurion). I tried adding the insurance but its nowhere to be found. I did have insurance when I had my galaxy nexus. Should I wait until my bill comes in which is the 16th or should I call Verizon? I was reading through the fine lines that I have 30 days from the day it was purchase to add insurance on my phone.

How did you go about getting the phone? Did you do the insurance when you added the phone? Generally in the past I just swapped SIMs and the insurance stayed on the account.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is what I did. I do remember seeing the insurance when I got the phone but for some reason it was removed not sure how or why?

I have 2 UDP and 1 TDP. Rumor has it that the Nexus 6 will be available on Feb 26th. If that's the case, I want to transfer my upgrade to line 3 TDP. But here's where I'm concern, Line 3 was recently upgraded a few days ago so she now has the G3. I'm hoping this shouldn't be an issue.

Line 1 UDP - GS5
Line 2 UDP - GNEX (upgrade available obviously lol )
Line 3 TDP - G3

So from my understanding, I should purchase the Nexus 6 with Best Buy and have it shipped and activate the phone under Line 3 (so I can program the Nano SIM) Once activated, I should wait an hour and move the Nexus 6 to Line 2 through Verizon's website then assign the G3 back to line 3. Is this process correct?
That's pretty close, but quite right. You'll need to activate the G3 before moving the Nexus 6 on to your unlimited line. There are two different ways in doing this:

1.) Activate the G3 on your line once the Nexus 6 is activated on line 3. After that, you can log into Verizon and choose to switch devices between lines 2 and 3.

2.) Reactivate the G3 on to Line 3 and then activate the Nexus 6 on Line 2.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all,

First, I appreciate all the helpful people in this thread. I've read through several pages, but just wanted to make sure I go with the best option for my scenario. My plan is to upgrade from the Galaxy S3 to the Galaxy S6, and keep unlimited. I've been off contract for some time now, as the phone is over 2 years old.

My situation is:
Galaxy S3, single line unlimited data

My first question is: is it possible to order the S6 at the subsidized price, get a nanosim (S3 uses microsim) and switch my unlimited data plan to the S6 without VZW knowing?

Secondly: how can I do this? Order online through best buy, choose mail order, keep existing plan, and then activate the phone myself? How can I obtain a nanosim if I only have 1 line on my plan? I read that some other people have had trouble getting VZW to send them one if their phone is not a nanosim type. I'd rather not cut my microsim down to size if I can help it, as that seems difficult. If that's the only option though, I will look into it.

Thanks in advance.

For the most part, you are right on the money. With single line plans, you only have two options:

1.) Cut your existing SIM and insert it into the S6 before turning it on or charging it
or
2.) Get a nano SIM from Verizon before upgrading your phone. When the S6 arrives, go online and use the IMEI of the phone and the new SIM to activate the phone directly onto your line (destroy the SIM that comes with the phone)

Thanks dusoccer. A couple more questions:

- Is Best Buy my only option for obtaining the S6?
- How can I get a nano SIM from Verizon without buying a phone? It sounds like they only send replacement nano SIMS if you have proof of already owning a nano SIM phone?

1.) No. The Best Buy method works with just about any 3rd party retailer; though, it is most effective through Best Buy. It's not recommended to order from Verizon.
2.) Just keep calling Verizon. All you need is for the right rep to say yes. Just say that a friend is giving you his/her old iPhone 5s, but you won't have time to go to a store due to work. You may have to call a couple of times, but someone will eventually say yes.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would like a Galaxy S6 for my wife and I but I really dont want to lose my UDP on these 2 lines.
Here is my setup:

Line 1 - Galaxy s4 UDP (Upgrade Available)
Line 2 - Galaxy S4 UDP (Upgrade Available)
Line 3 - LG - No Data - No Sim
Line 4 - Samsung Intensity - No Data - No Sim
Line 5 - Samsung Brightside - No Data - No Sim

I understand that I can transfer my upgrades from Lines 1 and 2 to say lines 4 and 5.
I understand that I can then upgrade lines 4 and 5 to the S6.

What I am not clear on is what to do from there. So it sounds like I need to order the phone so it arrives to my house vs going to the store since they will likely try to get me off of UDP. Is that correct?

What about the data they will force me on (2GB) on lines 4/5 when I upgrade them from no data to smartphones? After I move the S6's back to Lines 1/2 what do I do about the 2 lingering data plans?

I also don't know what I am doing with the s6's when I have them. I hear I should not turn them on until I swap the sim's from my S4's?

Just not sure on the exact procedure I should follow and I don't want to mess up ;)

Transfer the upgrade to one of the basic lines and select the 2gb plan. I assume they are under contract? When you get the Phone do not turn it on. Put your unlimited sim into the phone. You either need to cut your sim down or get a new nano sim. By not activating it will not add data to the basic line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the quick reply!
Line 3 is on a month to month and lines 3/4 are under contract until next month.

So I need to order the s6's online right? I can't get them tomorrow in store and do all of this magic?

How do I cut the sim or obtain a new one?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You will have to wait until they will ship the S6. Best Buy usually does in store pickup only on new phones. This will not work for the Best Buy method.

When they do allow it to be shipped you will pick keep existing plan. You then ignore the part that says you will lose unlimited data. When you get the Phone trash the sim and put your unlimited sim into the phone.

Not sure of the sim size on the X. If it does not have a nano you will want to cut out down or get a new one before you order the phone.

Thank you!
Moto X uses nano sim so the sim will be good to go.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, if I understand this correctly: my line with unlimited data is eligible for an upgrade. If I want to keep it, I can order the phone from verizon, best buy or wherever else. During the order process I'll be forced to select a different data package. When the phone arrives, before turning it on, I remove the sim and replace it with my existing sim. This will allow me to get the subsidized pricing without losing my unlimited data? I'm just super paranoid about losing it haha, but I'm desperate for an upgrade and my phone is the last one eligible.
