Is the S20 Ultra a failure?

This is irrelevant because the s20 ultra is not a crappy device. Besides the issue on the launch with the camera - the phones performance is excellent in every single area.

Not at all irrelevant. Top spec camera, but crappy camera.

Specs don't make a device--including the camera. It can have all the top specs in the world, like the Ultra camera does, and still be a crappy device, like the Ultra camera is.

The camera doesn't make it a great or crappy device. Want a great camera go buy a great camera. The ultra is a great phone with a nice camera. It's the S20 ultra phone, not the s20 ultra camera. Think we've forgotten what these devices are.

By the way, the camera has yet disappointed me, but then again I didn't buy it for the camera.

Don't even click into this guy's bait. He's reaching, big time.

If you are on an unlocked device there is a update out that improves the camera. I think you will be pleased. I too didn't have any major issues with the way it was.

If it was that simple we would all buy SD storage and get a base device. SD storage is not the same as internal storage in performance or reliability.

Huh? I've recorded 4k video continuously for nearly 2hrs straight to a SD card on many occasions with no performance problems. Now tell me what exactly are you doing to need more performance than that? You would have more of an argument for say security reasons so that people couldn't simply access your data by simply removing your SD card if your phone got stolen but I'm just not buying the performance argument if a SD card is sufficient enough in performance to continuously record 4k video until it fills up. I'm very curious what you're needing more performance over that level for?

No.

A) It's not convenient to carry around a separate and dedicated filming and photography device (I lost capturing so many good moments back in the day by not having my camcorder or still cam with me at all times like you do with your smartphone)

B) I go to a lot of events that only allow photography and filming with phone cameras and do not allow dedicated cameras inside the event so I need my smartphone to have the utmost photo and filming quality.

C) One of the main features of a modern smartphone is the camera and on a flagship phone that's marketed mainly for it's camera some expectations need to be met.

D) I wish we would all stop calling these powerful smart devices phones and take the phone part out of the name all together because they're so much more than just a phone! They're a HD camera, they're a GPS, they're a music player, they're a gaming machine, they're a video player, they're a web browsing device, online banking, etc.etc.etc.

If you bought an Ultra and don't care about camera quality and only bought it for a phone then I think you wasted a great amount of money on a smartphone when you could make phone calls on an old S5... why did you waste money on an S20U just to make phone calls, lmao.

Everyone has their opinion, bottom line these are phones with features. If the ultra don't suit your needs, return it or don't buy it. If photography is important to you, well get the equipment needed for it. Usually all in one devices lack in areas.

Probably because it's overall the best Android device on the market?

[Clean up the thread little, let's not give personal attacks ]

I just can't believe that people don't see a problem with that the Ultra is the most expensive flagship smartphone marketed mainly around having the best camera and going backwards in camera performance in some pretty important aspects over past years models and even cheaper models and some people not accepting this as a valid complaint is mind boggling. I'll bet if the display performed worse than past and cheaper models the same people would be in an uproar! But it's just a phone...the display doesn't matter! Get a dedicated TV if you care about image quality! Nonsense!

Everyone fully understand what the ultra brings to the table and they have their own opinion if they want to purchase or not , it's their money.

Not all of us care about the camera. I traded my 4xl with a great point and shoot camera for the ultra. I got the ultra for other reasons and the camera and video is great for my needs. Not every phone works for everyone. I totally understand though people being upset with the ultra camera.

Yeah personally I don't buy just for the camera, ok I sort of do as long as it's near the top and not complete dumpster fire. You may ask, it's $1400 and has to be best in all departments. Honestly every phone will be best in some areas as long as it's close to top in other areas and not complete disaster it's fine.

So coming back I don't consider it best camera even after update but it still takes awesome pictures in many different scenarios and has it strengths. I have absolutely no qualms in just taking this phone out in camera alone since it does most things fine.

Leaving camera aside, the phone has pretty much everything you can ask for. Even though Pixels and iPhones are always my favorite over Samsung phone, you absolutely can't go wrong with a Samsung flagship. You may say no way it's not worth that much and phone x or y is better, well then that's the right choice for your needs.

One thing that I like about the Samsung camera is that it still has manual settings. I know the average a consumer prefers an autoshooter but it's still great to be able to make adjustments when necessary.

Yeah I'm using pro mode as work around for the focus issues. I might have to use that even after the current camera update

This sentence right here is why iPhones sell so well. They aren't really the best at much of anything, but the overall package of being near the top in everything makes people love them.

Did you purchase the phone?

Idk if I would agree at them being overall better but they sure as hell are marketed that way. Kinda reminds me of an old Toyota. They aren't that fun to drive and the features don't wow you but they are reliable and the parts are inexpensive to replace lol.

The S20 ultra has a fantastic camera with the the best zoom of any phone out there today, and will keep getting better with updates that will perfect the ultra's impressive hardware. Should it have launched without any issues in the first place? - Of course! But I for one will stick it out, because I myself love the phone and the camera, and I'm not the only one. Just take a look at these reviews vs iPhone 11 pro. It is impressive.

I didn't mention 4K video. If SD meets your needs go with it.
