LG G4 Battery Life Thread

Re: Sudden G4 GPS battery drain

I have the same issue. If I set my location services to high accuracy the phone for some reason constantly searches for its location which makes the phone quickly discharge. Reduces my phone from 3 hours sot. To barely 2 if I use location services

Re: Sudden G4 GPS battery drain

So what I'm trying is reducing the refresh rate in AccuWeather from 30 minutes to 60 minutes. AccuWeather obviously needs GPS and was showing up high on the list for power usage. I expect to get at least 10 hours with 2+ hours of SOT. Anything well below that means something is wrong.

I just came off 16 hours with 3 hours of SOT so maybe the change to AccuWeather is working. I am still using high accuracy.

Re: Sudden G4 GPS battery drain

I was getting nearly 3 hours GPS time and I revoked the location access for my browser. It's been around 1-2 minutes since.

LG G4 battery charging questions?

So I have had this phone for about a week. When i got the phone had 30% battery left and i charged it till full. Ive never let the battery go below 40%. Should i drain the battery or keep it above 50 percent?

Re: LG G4 battery charging questions?

The general advice I give is if you want the absolute longest battery life, try not to let it get below 40%, unplug from the charger once full (meaning no overnight charging), and don't shelve it long term over 75%.

Basically lithium rechargeable batteries don't like being at either end of the charge range, but discharging to zero all the time is probably going to hurt more than leaving at a full charge. If you really want to get picky, then you may even be better off unplugging at 90-95%. That is likely overkill for most people because it'll be less time per cycle and adds more wear and tear on the USB port/cable. For something like the G4 with a replaceable battery, I wouldn't blame you if you were willing to sacrifice some battery life (which is relatively cheap and easy to replace) to save on port use.

This is just my advice for getting the most from the battery. Everyone's situation is different, so you may not be able to do everything for it.

You said yours was at 30% when you got it. Was that for a new phone? Typically those come with about a 50% charge to prolong shelf life. If it's new, there's no telling how long it was that low. It may already have some reduced capacity (though hopefully not much) depending on how long it was that low. If it was used, then all bets are off unless you know the prior owner's charging habits. In either case, your specific battery capacity per charge could possibly be lower than standard already.

Re: LG G4 battery charging questions?

Well the battery may of been more in the 40 percent range. I did not turn on physical percentage till few days ago "90%". So may have been 50 percent but idk. Second, thank you for the points. Third. It is true that the usb micro cable and charger loose its ability to charge over time? I will take your advice and never try to let it drain. I do like that I can buy batteries. I will try to never let it go 100 percent complete. Phone is new and was built in 15 model year in November.

Re: LG G4 battery charging questions?

USB cables are known to go bad without much warning or any signs of physical damage other than reduced charge rates and connection problems. The most common problems I've seen and experienced are the pins on the plug simply wear out and it get loose in the port, or the wires break off where they connect internally to the back of the plug micro plug. Originally they were meant to be a universal design to limit landfill waste from all the proprietary cables. I've personally thrown out more USB cables (from cheap to brand name premium) in a year than I did over the entire life of my old flip phone before USB came along. So now I just consider them a sacrificial component. I have been using a set of Volutz braided cables I got off Amazon lately and I've been impressed so far. I did have to warranty 2 of the 3 (may have been partly my fault, but great customer service and a 2 year warranty), but otherwise they look and preform great. I've had them a few months now.

Over time, the port itself can also go bad, but that usually isn't a problem. You're more likely to just need clean it out instead of repairing it. Still, it is a mechanical connection, so it won't last forever and something to consider. I learned that the hard way when I had two M8's where the ports food go out and have been recently seeing that becoming a common problem in that forum.

I personally do charge my phone to 100%, but I'm a somewhat heavy user and it doesn't dwell that high for long. In that case, I wouldn't worry about charging it all the way to 100%. If you're a light user that is getting close to two days or more on a single charge, then I would consider charging to a lesser amount simply because it'll remain that high for longer. But again, I'm just putting the info out there and you can use your best judgement.

I appreciate it all. How about the actual charge block the usb plugs into. In this case one made by LG.Does the actual charge block die?

It's possible, but it's not something I'd be concerned about. I've only had one charger go bad on me and it was a third party car charger. The ports loosened up and I just emailed them about a warranty replacement today. Other than that, I don't think I've seen any others actually go bad. Sure it happens, but it's pretty rare.

Re: Phone is overheating and battery is draining!

i just started having the same problem. A Verizon rep walked me through uninstalling Microsoft Exchange from my LG G4. I had installed my Outlook email through the exchange and he said there is a known issue with Microsoft exchange and this phone.
We uninstalled the Microsoft Exchange through Settings-Accounts-Press Microsoft Exchange-top corner dots Uninstall then shut off phone and turned it back on.
We then installed my Outlook email through regular email IMAP.
Phone has been great!

If you want the benefits of exchange, you can set up your Outlook email in the Gmail app. You just need to download and install the exchange services apk.

Re: Phone is overheating and battery is draining!

My g4 was perfect for 6 months. One day at work during an all day class, my phone was extremely hot and the battery was draining fast. Your post made me think what had I changed on my phone. No new installed apps, but I did make a small change. I decided to turn on "ok google" from any screen. Once I switched it back to using "ok google" from the google app only my battery and overheating issue was solved.

How can I get info off my LG G4 that randomly died?

I have photos, texts, downloads, etc., on the dead phone and no back up. I have a new phone and am wondering how I can get the data off the dead one and onto the new one.

Re: How can I get info off my LG G4 that randomly died?

did you store photos on the SD card? They should still be there.

Re: How can I get info off my LG G4 that randomly died?

If its saved to the memory card, just take out the memory card. If its on internal memory, you are SOL.

Terrible battery life (H815, 6.0 Marshmellow)

Hi all,

I've had my LG G4 since September, and it's been a good phone. However, more so recently, the battery life has been terrible. When Doze decides to work on my phone the battery life is average, but it rarely seems to work. I use over 60% battery in 5 or 6 hours, and that's with most of the time the phone screen being off.

For example, tonight I went to see the new Star Wars film. Using that as a guide, my phone screen was off for about ~3 hours during that time. However, see attached, the battery is just being drained. There aren't any particular apps that I see using 90% battery or whatever - in fact, using a battery app, it looks like phone radio is using an incredible amount.

Any tips for increasing the battery life? I don't see myself as an over user, but I often come out of an 8 hour work shift with just 20% left, and that's with mild web browsing every now and then, and maybe 20 minutes of YouTube video.

I'm thinking about doing a full restore on weekend after backing up my texts, or even ordering a new battery, but I don't feel this should be necessary.

My screen brightness is always 30% or lower. I don't know if this would have damaged the battery, but I use an Aukey quick charger.

Yep, look at the data use. The phone sent 600MB and received almost 2GB on mobile data in the last 4 hours. That's going to drain the battery quick residually if the signal wasn't great while you were in the theater.

Yeah that phone % is whack!

Re: Terrible battery life (H815, 6.0 Marshmellow)

Thank you for replying. I had recorded a 2 minute video that Google Photos would have uploaded (and I put it on Facebook, too) but I imagine that wouldn't have used 2GB? I wonder if that's wrong, as I changed my data usage cycle to yesterday (the day of the screen grabs, as it is now 1am) and it is only showing "Youtube - 575 MB" (my dinner at work) and "Google Services - 298 MB".

Could that be an error with GSam?
