Nexus 7 will lead Android tablets to overtake the iPad

I'm not attacking - I'm curious. Like what can't you do? My applications are primarily drawing, note taking, watching movies, math (I'm an engineer). I do miss some of the drawing apps, as I said. But my viewpoint and application is my own - someone elses will be different and I am sure I am missing some information.

Minor word processing, photo editing, watching anything that isn't Netflix (hbo go, directv, flixster, etc), several of my games don't work, a usable amazon app, I listen to WFAN a lot and the radio.com app doesn't work. There are others that I just can think of right now.

I'm also curious. I am one of very few android users in a company where most employees use iPhones. I am also the department geek in my area. I haven't found anybody doing anything on their iPhones that I can't do equally well on my android.

I love the iPhone. I think it's a great device. I have played with an iPad and loved it. But I also have to question these claims that you can do so many more things on an iPhone than android because I have yet to see one.

I didn't say android in general. I compared the nexus 7 to an iPad. Android on phones is a different story.

This list has more to do with 4.1 than the N7, IMO.

Know what I miss???? I'll tell you what I miss. I miss GOOD BOOKREADERS. iPad doesn't have one. Period. Neither does Android. Kindle? Nook? Don't make me laugh. Know what does? Palm! Yes, PalmOS has the best d*** bookreaders ever. Best d*** calculators too, which beat the living crap out of ANYTHING on iPad or Android, and most PC applications for that matter, but that's not the subject of this rant. Why can't anyone make a decent bookreader? Yes, they flip pages with a pretty animation. Whooo! But here's a thing - I often read at lunch. I don't want to touch my device with my grody messy hands to flip a page. I don't care if it looks like a book - that's backwards thinking for the unwashed masses. Know what several of the (free) Palm readers do? Autoscroll, smoothly or a line at a time. See TiBR for instance. Start the book, set your scroll rate, eat your lunch and hands off the Palm! I still have my Palm and I don't see it ever going away until someone makes software as good. Hasn't happened yet.

I really really really really really REALLY wish Palm hadn't gone toes up in the smartphone arena. They'd have the best one going right now and Apple would still just be making computers.

Word processing can be done from any of several office suites. I use Quickoffice. The rest, there are some photo suites which may not run on 4.1. I don't know for sure - something to look at.

I bought quickoffice pro HD and it doesn't seem available for the Nexus 7. Perhaps that has changed by now though? I haven't checked for a couple weeks.

Well, we can agree to disagree. I certainly care and believe the distinction is absolutely vital (particularly since those apps will be updated), but that's because I'm a fan of software. I'm sure plenty of others care--and don't care. Thus, we can let bygones be bygones.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that many of the apps would work except they check for the OS rev level and choke for no other reason than they see 4.1 instead of 4.0. Not real code incompatibility.

This is the oldest goof in the book. Windows had the same problems with lots of apps back when developers were still new.

Good points . I presume you're correct--they do a check, it fails, and it's incompatible. That's it.

This is what happened to one of my apps. It's a simple app and when I went to download it on JB it was not compatible. Updated everything locally, recompiled in Eclipse and it's ready to go. It was an oversight on my part and not the fault of JB.

Yup - the version I bought for my ICS devices doesn't work. Go look up Quickoffice Pro HD and you will be directed to a version that DOES work. It's working on my machine as we speak. And yes it does cost another $15 - that is not Googles fault. It should just work without buying another one.

Kingsoft works too.

I think app compatibility is an issue. If I use an app on a regular basis then it goes out of commission because of an os updates, even temporarily, it would be an annoyance. I was reading about an android app development company in China and they had all the various android devices they had to take into consideration when developing an app all laid out on a table. It was literally hundreds. It doesn't really matter whose fault it is. It's just the nature of the beast with the current state of android.

Ignoring that, as others have said both tablets can pretty much do the same things equally well. One is a little easier to use and more familiar. One offers more customization possibilities and in some cases, better specs. I don't see one being definitively better than the other. I use a lot of the various Google services so android is a natural fit for me personally. For someone else, they will obviously have other needs and desires in what they expect or want from their gadget. There is the cost/value proposition that's been used to argue and judge others people's personal choices but that's just the nature of our system.

So again, quick office pro HD does not work. A different version works, which costs another $15. This is exactly my freaking point. Who the hell wants to rebuy their apps every time there is an OS update?
