Oh, good! Now burn-in might be a problem?

The excuses for burn-in/image retention make me laugh. I have never had that problem with any previous device (Galaxy Nexus, Moto X, Moto X2, Moto X Pure Edition, Google Pixel XL) and I am the type that averages between 3-5 hours of screen time per day depending on the day's requirements.

I am hoping beyond hope that my 2 XL doesn't have this issue.

The v20 is LCD, which means it's not permanent and usage may actually decrease the retention.

On an AMOLED, IF it is burn in, it will be permanent and only will get worse. Image retention would probably act like an LCD and disappear with usage and a software fix.

So yeah, it makes a difference if this was burn in or retention.

I was addressing someone's incorrect statement that burn in verses retention is irrelevant so I assume we are in agreement.

Here's what I'm wondering: Why does the issue only seem to appear on grey screens? I can't reproduce the issue on any other color.

Well it can happen despite that you haven't noticed or experienced it

Grey/white screens would use all of the pixels. Red, blue and green screens would only use the red, green, or blue pixels. It should show up on white, but considering the brightness of the screen it could be masked. Although one of the 3 colors should show the markings in lower brightness. Usually blue since that burns out first.

However the effect only showing up on grey may also imply that it's image retention and not burn in.

It wouldn't be an issue if it burned 2 years down as that's acceptable. But since AMOLED burn in only gets worse over time, and concern over it happening in less than a month is worrisome about the future outlook of the display. Some people just won't gamble.

That's fair. For me I'm willing to overlook the muted colors, because I don't care for the super saturated look. Having used this phone now for 5 days the blue shift isn't bad. My 6P had a yellow tint to it at certain angles. If this is burn in though, that's just unacceptable for a device that is literally been out about 96hrs. Hopefully Google will make this right.

I'm really confused on what to do. I pre-ordered the XL with Bell and supposed to get it mid November. But with all these screen issues, should I consider myself lucky and be happy I can cancel and run away as fast as I can from this phone. The initial reviews were soooo good and now it's all tarnished. I was looking forward to this phone but now with all these screen issues, is the phone simply broken and I should sadly walk away from it?

Man all the tech reporters are hating this and taking it to a next level. If they are doing it with good intention of bringing attention then they sure doing a good job, but there are lot of tech reporters doing out of hate to Google. Not saying Verge is one of them but they pulled their score for the Pixel 2 XL.

I think we should be hearing soon from Google in a day or two based on the story going out of control.

Really bummed about this, I had to put my order on hold until Google comes out with an explanation and possible fix.

Luckily I already have the device, I'm perfectly happy with it. Also know if there is something seriously wrong then Google will do what's right given that this thing will be a marketing nightmare. So not really worried, will just see how it plays out either way.

Yeah, can't blame those who already have it in hand and not really seeing the issues. I've been trying to get my hands on a storm trooper 64 GB but it's never in stock so that plus everything else, guess I'll wait a bit.

I'm fortunate. I ordered a Pixel 2 to do a comparo. If the screen is that much better (ie less bad) on the non-XL, I'll probably make the switch. Bezels don't bother me and my favorite part of my Pixel 2 XL is the software.

I've had mine since Thursday, and mine is definitely affected by the screen burn in or whatever this will end up being considered. First of all, this is the best phone I have ever owned. The combination of software, camera, battery life, and great hardware (It grew on me) makes for the best phone I've had the privilege of owning.

Once the articles came out, I immediately checked to see if mine had the issue, and it definitely is there. Anytime I look at a picture on Twitter now, I constantly notice it where the capacitive buttons are. I reached out to Google tonight and sent the pictures of what I'm seeing, and they agreed that it wasn't normal. I'm currently deciding between doing a warranty replacement or a refund. Because of how amazing the phone is, I want to do a warranty replacement, but I think it might be a better bet to take the refund and revisit getting the phone again in a month or so once Google gets everything figured out.

I think with purchasing any phone from any manufacturer - be it Samsung, Google, Apple, LG, or Huawei - you run the risk of these types of issues. Every device line has its potential or real-life faults. LG had bootloops with the G4; there was the Note 7 débâcle; Apple had the touchscreen issue; and the Google Pixel 2 XL seems to have a screen that is supposedly lacking in quality. No device is perfect and sometimes, there are hiccups.

I usually wait a few months (or a year, because I'm cheap 🤣) to buy the phones that I want and are new at the time. By then, any known glitches or issues will be addressed or fixed; so I know what I'm getting myself into.

But, this is just a potential issue. It might not be a concern. I think we need a few more reviews and real-life user feedback before we worry too much! :)

Dang, very disappointing to hear as mine comes Wednesday.

I don't know why but this makes me bummed - I really wanted to buy the phone but hearing all these stories the logical thing is to cancel my preorder. Very disappointing.

Would the burn-in get worse than what is being shown in that pic going around the internet? Will it get darker than that as more time goes by?
I really have zero experience with screen burn-ins (it's so strange I'm seeing this on a phone in 2017!) so I ask. Thanks.
