Oh, good! Now burn-in might be a problem?

Would the burn-in get worse than what is being shown in that pic going around the internet? Will it get darker than that as more time goes by?
I really have zero experience with screen burn-ins (it's so strange I'm seeing this on a phone in 2017!) so I ask. Thanks.

If it is indeed burn-in then yes it will get worse as time goes on. If it's image retention then it shouldn't since it should reset and fix itself after you leave the phone off for a bit or play something with motion.

If it's permanent burn-in, then yes, it will get worse.

But I've heard from some that it may just be image retention. Until Google gives us a definitive answer, we'll have to wait and see.

Probably a stupid question is I'm not familiar with the issue, but, is burn-in potential been experienced or also an issue with the regular version of the pixel 2, (non XL)

I am still carefully checking my phone every day, and so far I have not seen the issue.

I'm inclined to think it's image retention, based on reports of the latent image fading after time.

It seems to me that if the problem is IR then fixes like DawinPanda mentioned could completely solve the problem.

Right now just waiting for results from Google's investigation, and still loving every minute of using my phone, the best phone I've ever had.

My Pixel XL (2016) has burn in on the screen but I just now noticed it on the status bar. They are offering to replace the device.

There will not be a recall in the sense that it is a recall. At most, they will give a "product replacement program" that's voluntary.

IMHO, I feel that it's a QC problem over on LG's side. I don't think the panel is bad per se as I've seen some of the good units of the 2 XL and they do look quite nice. The unfortunate part is that there are more bad units than what many would consider acceptable for a premium handset.

I have the 2XL since Thursday and so far, all is OK with the screen (for now). I turned off the "always on / listen" feature. I have Lux Dash (paid) to control screen brightness. In Lux Dash, I keep the screen setting to "night" when I'm indoors to lower the brightness of the screen (hoping that this helps to prevent burn in). The screen doesn't need to be that bright inside, anyways.

I use the phone to check work emails, browse, sometimes play a few games, or read a book. I am hoping that this is a fixable, software issue, like Samsung where they move the pixels of the status bar and nav buttons every so often.

I have an order for a Pixel 2 XL that is shipping end of November...I'm not sure whether Google will fix this screen issue by then. Do you guys recommend I cancel this order or not? This seems to be a real fiasco for Google and I would hope they would fix it as immediately as they can...

It depends on how you feel.

Personally, NONE of these issues are a big deal to me. I never see the blue tilt unless I specifically look for it. I don't mind colors that are less saturated, so that doesn't bother me. And I don't have the image retention, but even if I did it's where the navigation buttons and status bar are, so chances are that I would have to be specifically looking for that too.

But you know yourself better than anyone. Do you think you'd be sensitive to these issues?

You could always take delivery and try it for the return period, and then if you don't like it, return it...

I'm in the same boat as far as time frame and I'm going to hang in there for the time being. I have a feeling we will be able to make better informed decision as our date approaches.

Some of the fallout is already apparent in the conversations I’ve been hearing around the Pixel 2 XL. People are conflating the 2 XL’s display issues with the Pixel 2, assuming both devices have problems. That’s a logical way to think, because in almost all cases of a phone having a regular and an XL (or Plus) version, the screen tech remains the same. But in the case of Google’s 2017 Pixels, the smaller one has an OLED screen from Samsung, while the larger one has an OLED panel from LG — sort of the same tech, but entirely different leagues in terms of quality.

I don't know if somebody said something to this effect, but we have no idea exactly how the people who reported this were using there phone for sure. We don't know the brightness level, what apps and if the screen on time was in big chunks. Like a long drive with maps at full brightness. What color their background is. I know some people here have reported the same issue. Im not saying a problem doesn't excist. All Im saying is I think reporters/reviewers on the internet can go to the extreme and sometimes could even create a problem depending on their review process or whatever. My thought is what if most are seeing IR and a few might actually be burn in. Basically my rule of thumb is if you dont treat your stuff right bad things will happen. I am not accusing anyone of anything. Just a thought.

I've had the phone since Thursday, and I always keep my brightness around 20-30% at most. Today, I have about an hour of screen on time, with normal usage, and I still see the issue on mine. I agree though that many reviewers may have purposely pushed their phones to the extreme to get the issue to show, but with only very light usage for me it shows.
