OK I'll admit it, the G5 is a complete fail

No hate here, because I actually have the phone unlike the OP. I have had it for about 2 days (jumped from G4) and my only complaint so far is I don't like having the on/off button and FP scanner in the same button, but that's a very minor complaint. I haven't done a side by side test, but the FP scanner seems to be a little quicker than my 5X. Overall this phone absolutely flies and I haven't experienced any lag anywhere. It's easier to hold without a case than the 6P or Nexus 6 and I would have preferred a polycarbonate body because I don't like or use cases, but I sure as heck will take aluminum over glass on the back which is the most ridiculous material for the back of a mobile device if you really think about it. Seems like Apple stopped doing that for some reason a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, I like Samsung and have had several of their phones. Anyway, there are no sharp edges that some have complained about and the bottom fits perfectly. It would be impossible to stick even the thinnest piece of paper in or around the bottom piece like some have done with pre-release models because there is no gap. My friend at TMobile has a G5 and hers has no gaps either so maybe this issue was rectified. The button that releases the bottom fits so perfectly you can't even feel it. It's really that tight and smooth.

I prefer a front firing speaker(s), but the G5 gets very loud and has more volume than I will ever need. Apparently LG has done an excellent job with the antennas because my office is notoriously bad for all carriers and my G5 signal is stronger than all of my previous phones which also includes a Nexus 5, and Note 4.

The screen is excellent and gets very bright (seems like I read 850 nits somewhere?) and easily beats everything else I've had for outside use and battery life seems like it will fine, but time will tell. I only swapped batteries maybe 6 times in the 11 months I had the G4, but it sure was and will be nice having this feature. Charging keeps getting faster, but nothing beats the ability to pop in a fully charged battery in seconds.

I have used Nova Launcher on every phone since my Note 4 so I can't comment on what LG has done with the G5, but I doubt I'd like it. The cameras (all three) are excellent as expected and I was surprised to find out I was getting a free 360 Cam even though I probably won't use it beyond the first day. I applaud LG for trying something different though, but outside of the VR I really don't think anything else will sell. They need to go back to a removable back with the G6 and make it feel like the Nexus 5 or 5X, but they won't because form always wins over function in the smartphone business. I love my 5X, but the speed of this device is just amazing and might be a keeper.

Yep... you are quite right. Near every phone on the market has several design elements that were put into place solely for their aesthetic value and actually detracted away from the functionality of the phone.

When you think about it now these phones get released every year and I'm sure the time for QC is becoming less and less... No excuse for what some have experienced v but considering the huge design changes of LG G5 maybe it's not a big surprise that some have experienced QC issues. Wonder if they will stick with the modular design for G6, or relegate the modular function to another phone like flex.. ?

That's a question everyone is asking. What good are modules when the next gen phone may not even support them? I mean, that is a valid question for the camera module, which will be sold for... what... $70? But that B&O DAC will be several hundred USD.... and while I know you can use it for other phones, it's not exactly the most elegant DAC you can use if its not plugged in.

So will the G6 use the same modules? It might, but knowing LG, I doubt it... they lose interest in design elements all the time.

I can't see it going very far.... Maybe a G6.... Maybe not. I don't foresee many other modules being developed..... If they had something in mind they would be dropping hints that more are on the way. I have a few ideas for them but they would have to pay me.

I have finally come to terms with it. Yes this phone is a complete fail. Just wait..... In less than 6 months you'll have issues with the removable modules. The contacts or connect points will start to wear and be loose. Damn LG. The G4 was epic until boot loop issues became prevalent. Customer service blows. My V10 is awesome but has gotten no update love of any kind. (Except for one small update post launch) And now the G5...... I don't know anymore. I was an LG fan coming from a G3 originally.... But not so sure now. Sammy is not an option for me. And neither are any unlocked phones as AT&T will not share the volte love with them. Come on manufacturers.... #makesmartphonesgreatagain

I just got a G5 a week ago, to replace *3* Galaxy S5's which ALL had problems with people not being able to hear me - "you sound far away"..."I cant hear you"..."You sound like you're in a tunnel", DESPITE making perfectly nice crisp recordings on the voice recorder. So I was just about to take the S5 to the range and shoot it, then stomp what was left, when offered to exchange it for a G5. Not really an exchange - I have to pay it off at $11 a month for 2 years! ( I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG PHONE! AND THEY OWE ME COMPENSATION FOR THAT ONE - any attorneys doing class action on this?! )

SO I have the G5 and will probably never use the detachable bottom. It's for my part time home business. The camera is sweet and I like the fact that the keyboard buttons are like 4 times the size of the tiny 1/8" ones on the S5, where almost everything I typed was messed up. The only two things I don't care for, so far, are the screen sensitivity sometimes ( have to tap a bunch of times if my hands are dry - live in Denver ) and the auto-brightness, which becomes too dim to see when the light is low.

But these manufacturers REALLY should get the message that we're paying $500+ for these PHONES and they should quit selling them with problems!

Sorry for getting off topic but can someone explain to me what the hashtags are all about on forums?!?!? I thought it was an Instagram/twitter thing only.

I don't think forums recognise them, but its probably more like convention or habit to use them. Or you can use them to convey humour or some kind of statement. Personally I never use them.

Doh!

Sitting here on my desk are both the LG G5 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

I can tell you that the Edge wins in some categories while the G5 wins in others. Every person needs to decide what's best for them. For example, camera quality is the most important. Check this image out.

The S7E had completely eradicated the purple flowers! I've seen this happen multiple times in the S7 shots I've taken - a lot of details that actually matter get eliminated. Want another one?

Look at the bushes, the yellows are completely merged in the S7E shot while on the G5 they are still visible and it actually looks artistic and painted on.

Battery life on the S7 and G5 should be comparable, but the Edge variant will win.

I don't think this is a failure of a device, I like it. It doesn't feel as premium for the price tag as the S7E, but it doesn't feel bad... The G5 isn't perfect though, I can make a list of issues if you'd like. The S7E has a list of issues as well... No device is perfect, but you need to pick a device that will work for YOU.
