*(If flashing from a previous version wipe cache & dalvik-cache to avoid issues.User data won't be lost)

What do you mean by user data won't be lost?
Does this mean texts, apps and settings won't be gone?

I'm still on 2.2 by the way.

That's right all data like email, text, and apps will be intact. Just wipe cache and dalvik-cache not data/factory reset and you should be fine.

I don't see an option to delete dalvik just "wipe cache partition"

I'm not sure what recovery you have think they are all the same.
In recovery go to wipe,it should say something like this.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache <---wipe
Wipe dalvik-cache <--wipe
Wipe SD:ext partition
Wipe battery

If it doesn't resemble that just wipe anything that says cache then flash.

clockwork that I got from simpleroot.

I have;
-reboot system now
-apply sdcard:update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset/
-wipe cache partition
-install zip from sdcard
-nandroid
-partitions menu
-advanced

Oh, no

I have the same recovery that this guy has. I was running AC 2.0 I used quick boot to go into Recovery. I wiped the same thing that you told him to do.

My wipe was successful. Then I installed the zip from SD. All looked good. It said it installed correctly but it froze on that screen right there. I let is sit for 15 min...Nothing...Still froze. I proceeded to remove the battery and reboot. Now I am stuck in the Sprint 4G Loop.

Problem solved. I tried to go from 2.2 to 2.4 and didn't do a full wipe. :)

Just got into bootloader and wiped again as well as did a nandroid back up. About to flash rom.

Tell me this, what recovery has that dalvik cache on it. When i first rooted in June I had that one. Got a new phone in July (old one got wet, gotta love BB). when i rooted this time I had the clockwork Recovery that doesn't have the dalvik option.

ok nandroid and wipe cache finished. About to flash rom AC 2.4 again.

No biggie. heres what you do ...

1) pull battery
2) put battery back in
3) press and hold the volume down button
4) while still holding the volume down button, press and hold the power button
5) you should be on a white screen called the hboot screen. Select option #2 recovery
6) you're back in recovery.

Next time wipe dalvik and cache before flashing. Sounds like you did not wipe dalvik.

You got to love their being multiple recoveries on the market which don't function the same ... :)

If you have clockwork recovery
-The wipe dalvik is under advanced

If you have amen ra recovery
- It's conveniently under "wipe" where the rest of the wipe functions are

If you have clockwork and now realize you may want amen ra recovery
- Download ROM manager from market, launch it, scroll to bottom, select "flash alternate recovery"

here are some highlights from netarchy, who's well known as being the EVO kernel guy for XDA. These are not my words, this is taken straight from Netarchy's kernel thread.
An important note for Clockwork mod Recovery users:
Clockwork Mod is reportedly not wiping correctly (ie; if you try to wipe cache/dalvik-cache/data/etc it's not actually doing it, or not doing it right). You may want to consider Amen Ra recovery instead.

Ok I found it under advanced. Now I am trying that. If this doesn't work how do I do the get the other one if the phone is stuck in reboot limbo? I just did the dalvik. didn't get a confirmation. We will see what happens when i flash rom again. :)

Edited for thread cleanliness - User was flashing between ROM's that require a full wipe, without doing the full wipe.

I never upgraded past the first ROM. Never used 2.3. OK, here is where i stand. I did the wipe. Flashed my nandroid from 2am this morning (thank goodness i did that nandroid backup :)

I already have ROM Manager installed on my phone. Let me check for updates though.

About to wipe and flash...stay tuned. Thanks for all your help. I have another question after the break.

So, I followed the above steps and went to quickboot but it still recovers to Clockwork. I went back to ROM Manager and selected flash alternate recovery again but this time I reboot into recovery with Rom manager. It asked me to confirm my desire to reboot to Amen Ra, I said yes but it still rebooted to Clockwork....

When I look at Rom Manager under the Flash Clockwork Recovery section it reads:

current recovery: RA Recovery 1.7.0.1
Latest recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1

Confused now

DUDE!!!! You never used 2.3???? We'll your mystery is probably solved. The upgrade to 2.3 required a full wipe. That means if you didn't upgrade to 2.3 and are upgrading straight from 2.2 to 2.4 ... you need to do the full wipe that was required with 2.3

You will still want to use Amen Ra recovery though. It wipes good (doesn't leave pieces of paper behind) ....anybody?

don't squeeze the charmins.

sooooo...if i WIPE, THEN UPGRADE TO 2.3, THEN UPGRADE TO 2.4 (NO WIPE) WILL I THEN BE ABLE TO USE MY NANDROID BACK UP TO RESTORE MY STUFF?

No. to backup your stuff you will need something like titanium backup. NAND backups are like taking a ghost image of your hard drive. When you restore from them its all or nothing. You can't pick and choose stuff.

Titanium works well. I had to reload a couple of widgets after I restored from titanium but other than that it worked as advertised. System settings were saved and everything. Idk about texts because I don't care if they get saved. I use SMS backup to email them to myself every so often.
