On alpha 8 I've noticed the data still goes on and off repeatedly, causing my phone to heat up. I've tried all the various data toggles and rebooting
Also any time I touch the screen the physical buttons light up. I've noticed it with the last couple of builds.
Wifi still works like a champ.

im having the same problems to . Also to lock texts I have to do it twice because it never locks the first time. Also hitting the settings button in the main text screen it does not always give the option to delete messages

I'm also getting intermittent data. I love the ROM, but the data issues are the only thing keeping me from making this my daily ROM. I tried the instructions given in the OP, but to no avail.
Any other tips and tricks?

The toggle thing is the worst part of the new ROM for me. Some reboots, notification area toggles work. Some reboots, they don't. Sometimes a deeper look at "settings" shows airplane mode on, mobile data off, but the phone connects to wifi or 3G like nothing's up. It's super wonky.
Latest issue: Stopwatch & Timer app stops counting down if the screen goes off. I'm not certain if it's due to my CPU clock going down significantly when the screen is off, or if there's something bigger tied into the regular clock not really updating much when the screen is off. I'm guessing the latter - countdown starts up again when screen comes on, clock rights itself after a half-minute of screen being on. If they're tied together to some process not keeping time when the screen is off, . . . well.

I finally rooted and flashed my ZVC Optimus S. I was going to go to ZVH (HyrdoROM like I did for my daughter) but thought I'd stop by on ZVD for a test drive of Kraven's CM9. Wow! Just Wow! Just freaking Wow! I can't wait for this to work well enough to use full time.
My 3G data didn't work so I Nandroided it to play with later, but most other apps seemed to work. I moved on to Reborn ROM as a (hopefully temporary) daily driver.
Don't know if this has been reported, but I had a tough time shutting it down. Several times when I tried to shut it down, it just restarted. I seriously was beginning to think it couldn't be turned off and that I'd need to pull the battery. But for some reason, after about 3 tries, it finally shut down. The same thing happened to me again. Both times that I got it to shut down was by quicly powering it off before it completely booted up. Not sure if that helped or it was a coincidence.

Just for references sake, I used Kraven's CM9 A8 all day yesterday with no mobile data or WiFi issues after simply turning mobile data and WiFi off and on just once each.
I always find it a bit cleaner to flash the ROM, boot in, then reboot and flash Gapps. I probably got into this habit after having lockscreen issues with my Xoom when installing a Team EOS ROM while flashing ROM/Gapps at the same time.
Maybe it's a bit of paranoia taking over, but I just think it creates fewer issues.

an alternative definition (besides the correct live wall paper answer)...

My apologies for taking so long to answer this question, You shouldn't have to disable data2ext, simply flash the new ROM and you should be good. if you aren't, as I said, try flashing the mod I released in the forums here, Although until I get around to updating the ZIP, please copy e2fsck from /sbin/ in recovery to /system/xbin and /system/bin and chmod it 777 before rebooting. You should be good. Mounts2SD has a couple features that (I'm not sure so don't quote me.) data2ext doesn't have, However Kraven's CM9 now supports sd-ext partition mounting by default since /etc/init.d scripts are executing perfectly now (Thanks btw Kraven)
