Samsung's UI will always be better than stock

Re: i don't understand why people like Stock Android so much?

At some point this becomes a circular argument, and becomes a matter of people arguing over whose opinion is right (hint: neither is).

Re: i don't understand why people like Stock Android so much?

Not the change the topic but it's related.

Is Samsung's software (or anyone else for that matter) a better experience than stock Android in tablet form?

In other words, does the form factor change your opinion about stock Android?

There's one thing that can easily make Samsung's tablet experience worse, which is that they still have hardware keys for some reason - and that means tablet is only oriented to those keys in one direction, whereas all tablets that use soft keys can be held in any direction and work perfectly. Aside from functional stuff like that, there's not a whole lot of difference in terms of software - however there's a general consensus that iOS tablets are still quite a bit better than most Android tablets.

Re: i don't understand why people like Stock Android so much?

Security updates. Samsung lags around 5 months behind here and that's absolutely unacceptable
My Note 8 is on a December 1st security patch. I think there was one in November too. 5 months? Come on. Your point could have some merit if you didn't greatly exaggerate.

Not every region gets updates regularly/or at the same time. All our US models are on December update but I believe some regions might not have the latest updates and I read on Reddit some models indeed are still on August security patch.

And what was it before that?

Really don't know, but I got the phone on 9/5 so whatever shipped with it I guess.

I've been using Android phones since the Motorola Droid X and to be honest I never knew, or cared to know anything about security updates and their frequencies until I saw people ******** and moaning about it on here. I can't believe this is really that big of a deal to people.

And that is fine that is all you see -- but that still doesn't mean others don't care about it. If you don't that is fine but acting as if getting one update means Samsung is always up to date seems a tad overboard. They have been known for dropping the ball. Not just them but any manufacturer.. especially when you toss carriers in the mix. They slow it down even more.

So the "big deal" here is that you want to downplay people's choices for simply answering a question that was asked for by the OP because you think it is irrelevant.

Nope. The big deal is the guy I quoted said Samsung is 5 months behind with security updates. The phone is almost 4 months old and is on its 3rd security update, so he was dead wrong.

You remember 3 updates but don't remember what you were on before this December one? :P.

Have you been following along or are you just picking and choosing what you read for the sake of trying to make an argument where there is none...

Re: i don't understand why people like Stock Android so much?

why is it such a big deal? stock experience is kind of boring. take out all the fun stuff and give you only the basic's. Basic phone with a heavy price tag..
OLED screen is cheap aswell.
Don't you think Google is getting abit greedy now?

this is comparing Pixel 2 XL to Note 8 or s8+

It's funny that I stumbled upon this. I could not agree anymore. Let me tell my story...

So I had the note 8. Loved it big time, beat phone I've ever had, little to no complaints. Then I kept hearing about about the pixel 2Xl being great and all, even a couple of my friends got it and we're saying how it's a great device. So I sold my note 8, bought the pixel 2 XL a week ago. Today I got a note 8 back and I couldn't be happier. The pixel 2XL is a good phone let me get that out of the way, it's a great phone actually. Greta battery life, great camera, software is smooth and fast, speakers are good and the display isn't as bad as they make it out to be, all you gotta do is swithc to the saturated mode and you'll be just fine. With that being said, it is absolutely overhyped. When you hear people talk about it, they make it sound as if it's the best thing ever etc...the note 8 is 20 times better in my opinion. No, it's 50 times better. I mean I ENJOY using the note while the pixel bored me to death. It is so boring oh my God, I don't see how people can use it. It's not quite like using an iPhone but it's almost as boring honestly. The phone has no identity to me, it's just a good phone and that's it whereas with the note, there's so much you can do, so many features, it always keeps me busy and wanting for more. That's the best way for me to put it in words. But honestly, I think the pixel 2 XL is absolutely overrated, I just don't see the hype. In fact, I prefer the OnePlus 5T that I had back in November because it charges much faster, it's just as fast, it has more ram, the build quality is great, the phone is super fast, the screen is better despite being 1080P all for nearly half the price. Also the speaker is louder on the 5T despite it being a single firing one. So yeah, I did digress quite a bit lol, but stock Android is definitely overrated and super duper boring. It's not for me and I know now not to listen to others and just see for myself. I prefer Samsung's skin over stock anyway.

Na just having fun. You said "I think" so I just took that as you weren't sure.. but you sounded definite on the 3 so it was conflicting from "I think" to "I know" :).

I digress though... The Pixel offers constant updates and that is what people like. It is actually really good of Samsung to stay on top of the updates (especially Security ones) but they aren't "known" for it you could say is most peoples issue. Especially if you don't have their latest model phone (such as your Note 8).

This year Samsung has been better. For phones outside the US and carrier interference, they only dropped the ball with the update for Blueborne (Sept) maybe due to Samsung has so much more stuff going on for it (Bluetooth UHQ, Adapt Sound over Bluetooth). Once October rolled it they caught up and by November phones were largely updated as far as I can tell.

That's good. I hope they keep it up with January and beyond.

Of course that's for the flagships though. I also have a J series phone that's still stuck on the November patch, but that's sort of the norm for the lower end of the spectrum for them. Seems like for J series updates come in every 2mo as far as i can tell. But considering some J series models sells for prices of phones that don't even get to sniff updates, it's better than nothing.

They have to.

But let’s face it. Most Android OEMs are pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to updates. Only a few non-Google OEMs like HMD actually are committed to updates.

I used to like stock Android and I still see some perks to stock Android. But, I have long changed my position on this. I love my Samsung Note 8 and all the features that come with it. I'm not a fan of stock anymore. Also, updates don't matter much to me anymore. It used to though. For some reason I used to impatiently wait for the newest updates. But, my Note 8 is so feature rich and performs so smoothly I don't need to wait for anything. It's the smart device that I want and need right now.

I would like to add to this that it changes from year to year as well... One year Moto will be really good at updates, the next it will be someone else. I have to agree that over the "life" of Samsung they have never been really good with updates, hopefully that will change starting now and it is not just their turn to be better.

Re: i don't understand why people like Stock Android so much?

Either way, my XL2 arrives today and if I can get my work IT to set up my Blackberry work account I will use it for at least a week and see if I like it. Either way I will keep it, but it might not be my day to day phone.

I will miss the s-pen and wireless charging, not Samsung pay because i still have my Gear S3.

I miss my S-Pen and Wireless Charging too but I'm just enjoying the experience of the Pixel 2 XL and the awesome camera too much to go back to the Note 8.
