Seems like more folks are "meh" for Pixel 4 than excited?

Re: Seems like more folks are "meh" for Pixel 4 than excited?

They ar different platforms but iOS isn't so much more efficient that it needs only 1/4 the amount of RAM vs. An Android flagship device. The RAM management issues on Pixel 3 were patched up fairly quickly from what I understand. My Pixel 2 XL worked great with only 4 GB of RAM. My wife also has a 2 XL and she always has tons of stuff going on. She never has any issues either. 6 GB will be fine for the Pixel 4 IMO.

As for not wanting to compete with other OEM I am not sure. The Pixel line has always been what I consider to be conservative. I don't think Google is building them to take over the market. Google makes its money from advertising and the app store. It doesn't cost the OEM anything to use Android as far as I know. It is in Google's best interest to have Android on as many devices as possible to generate revenue. As far as an OEM coming up with their own OS I don't know of a reason why they would. It would cost them a ton on R&D and then there is the issue of developing apps for their alternative platform. I could always be wrong but I don't see any threat of an OE like Samsung moving away from Android ecosystem anytime soon.

I agree 12 GB is overkill but it should have been 8GB just to future proof over the next year and given that it’s expensive phone and other Android flagships start at 8GB minimum. It’s useful or not, at least google needs to think in terms of marketing. You will get thrashed about not having 8GB ram or wide angle lens etc. This is all unnecessary distraction when they could have easily avoided. For me it doesn’t matter but I can completely understand where the complaints come from especially with the prices google is charging.

As far as Apple it’s a different story. It’s a different platform, optimizations are different and there isn’t anything else to compare in iOS. There is only iPhone and also iPhones performs great unlike the Pixel 3 which had constant complaints about performance from many members in various forums and every blogger/YouTuber.

I’m not saying putting 8 GB magically solves all issues but c’mon Google at least in terms of marketing you know you will get criticized if you put anything less than 8 GB for flagship prices. Sometimes it’s simple things which Google keeps stumbling on.

There was another thread which questioned are they doing it on purpose so that they don’t offend other Android OEMs for flagship hardware specs. I’m slowly coming around that and may be there is some truth to that.
I can agree with the range of 6-8 GB for RAM. Anything more than that is definitely overkill. The specs on the current Note is flirting with my gaming PC specs, and it's a phone.... something that will most likely be replaced after 2 years.

^^^ TRUTH ^^^

I'm beginning to wonder if getting the P4 is a good idea right now - 🤔

I've been down that road and tried the others. Ended up back on a Pixel. On paper there's way better value with other Android phones out there, but actually using them day to day makes me yearn for a Pixel again.

It's hard to quantify. There's just something about them that fits with me if that makes any sense.

Works for me - Orange P4 due here mid-week - PIXEL ON!

Not sure how long ago you did that. I am on Note 10+ coming from Pixel 3 XL. Like it very much. I'll probably get a user pixel 4 XL few months down the road but Note 10+ is a serious alternative to Pixel XLs.

Most recent was Galaxy S10. No question a great phone, but I still preferred my Pixel 3.

All comes down to preference. No bad flagship phones at this day and age. I just wish pixel 4 xl had 128gb base storage and ultra wide angle. Why Google why? These are like standard flagship features. They are a must.

I think google is being too stubborn with their pixel phones. They are being almost Apple like and that’s not good because Apple has stopped being Apple like (if that makes sense).

Users wanted;

-Smaller bezels and better screens. Google said no.
-expandable storage-was never good g to happen but at least offer more on board storage. Google said no, you’re good with 64 as a base and 128 max.
-wide angle lense-google could have offered this as part of a three camera system, but decided we don’t need a wide angle lense.
-better battery life-most egregious of all. Google not only didn’t deliver substantially better battery life, they even made the battery in the 3 smaller. Bad timing google. Samsung and Apple have stepped up in a major way on this front and google missing yet another year is a joke.
-horrible trade in value to entice users to upgrade. Samsung is offering hundreds more and apples resale value is the best in the industry. What google is offering is a slap in the face.
-6 gigs of ram. While I’m sure adequate, Samsung and one plus are offering up to 12.

The “meh” reaction is warranted. The only real upgrade here is soli radar and Face ID. Why should people be excited? Especially considering that many of the software camera upgrades are coming to the 3 series later this year.

I agree. Although to be fair they did improve the design and display, and the performance should be good anyway.

However when the flashy new facial recognition works when you are asleep it makes you wonder how Google could get basic things wrong after all these years?

Re: Seems like more folks are "meh" for Pixel 4 than excited?

I am amazed by the amount of lackluster and straight forward negative feedback the phone is getting. I know folks hated the notch on the pixel 3 xl but away from that, YouTube reviews praised it when it came out. Not so much for pixel 4 this year.
That's true ...I mean the notch is gone , more ram ..just storage needs to be fixed . And to say pixel came with old chip is ridiculous it has the same as all 2019 flagship Android phones , not much difference in the 855+ ... battery to be seen but think a day or end of the day should be right . But I think the reason they didn't see the 90hz rate as it depends on content , where the 1+7pro is fixed either 90hz or 60hz all the time .

Edit:. Don't get me wrong there are a few things I didn't like they did .

Maybe you would have upgraded if Google gave you $450-$500 for your pixel 3? But when they give you measly $260, of course many won't.
Yeah.... Especially when Samsung offered 600 towards an unlocked Note10+

IMO, this will be the worst selling pixel of them all
For me not to be interested in one means that something isn't right. Problem is that it's more than one thing. They'll still sell some numbers but you may be right. It feels like this could be the worst selling Pixel.

Finally selling through AT&T might offset that though. That being said, their sales potential is certainly going to be hurt quite a bit by many of the questionable decisions they have made.
You hit on a good point.... Selling through carriers night make a difference. Also not everyone buying one may realize what the drawbacks are.

Minor point, but upping the RAM even more without upping the battery would be slightly detrimental to battery life

Yes. The funny thing is that it may actually sell better because of its presence in all the carrier stores for once. This alone could easily make up for any of the (real or perceived) deficiencies of the phone.

I can foresee articles claiming all the nay sayers wrong because sales are the same or slightly better this year (forgetting that they had better be, given how much more visible and accessible to average consumers the Pixel 4’s will be this year compared to previous Pixels).

In fact, I suspect we might not get an apples-to-apples look at sales year over year. Maybe someone will do a Verizon+online sales comparison, but short of that, I expect sales comparisons to be apples-to-oranges.

The masses walk into carrier stores to upgrade their Samsung to newer Samsung or Apple to newer Apple. If Google have priced their pixel 4 less than apple or Samsung, you might have a chance. But when pixel 4 is $100 more than Apple iPhone 11, it's game over friends. Who in their right mind (not us techies), would say no to iphone 11 that is $100 less?

Well, even so, they will have many more sales in stores in the US now, than the 0 they previously had (outside of Verizon). It does mean a lot for people to be able to see and play with phones in person.

For the price and what they are giving you they are not competing with the competition at all. Camera, battery size are the two biggest let downs and the lack of trade in values is really poor.
