Still have missing memory? Only 2GB

Speaking strictly on the point of the hamburger in the picture @ McDonalds is not what they serve you on your tray or in your bag.

But what if they did look like that then one day you got one that looked like how they really do look, you would feel like you were shafted

Glad to hear it is more then enough for you and to be honest it is probably more then enough for me (for the most part) but I hate it when I am told one thing and get another

Well thankfully opinions don't matter in electronics. There are references in my earlier posts in this thread that give you that breakdown from rooted users who went snooping. It's a total of 4.6 gigs of actual memory. 2 is used by android sense, and ungodly amounts of bloatware. The rest is what you get. All signs points toward SLC configuration. Can't be changed.

Also apples and oranges. Phones are not PCs don't try to tell yourself they are. They have a long way yet to go.

If this is in fact true its sad that they would advertise the device as 8 gigs. I understand some people are content with not having their anywhere near 8 gigs, but I do believe that we should be entitled to having an 8 gig device (not including space the OS will take up). We paid for it so why shouldn't we get it? And is there anything that we as a customer can do?

We have a better chance of a resolution of peace in the middle east and our president fixing our economy than the picture of a Mickey D's burger look just like what you are getting...

:)

stop complaining and talking about lawsuits and nonsense like that.

Yeah it sucks, but honestly, how many apps are you going to put on the phone?

I have installed a crap load and the memory has slightly went down.
Plus you can move apps to the 32 gig sd card they provided.

Deal with it or return the phone!

Sorry, just tired of hearing all the *****ing.

Well if you're comparing PCs and phones you'll find just as many crucial differences as you will similarities. Hardware capability, operating system characteristics, and ultimately freedom all go to PCs. Cell phones are mobile and cheap. Were you to buy a hard drive (an act that has no equivalent on the phone world save buying a microsdhc card in which they gave us the PC's equivalent of a 2TB drive) it would be YOUR hard drive, not the phone's. You could take it out, move it to another computer, format it, partition it to have 4 different operating systems, encrypt it however you like. An x86 system is much different than an ARM system. They each have their own sets of pros and cons but to make comparisons like that is simply not accurate.

Also I don't understand your gas gauge model. I'm fairly sure running out of gas is an "oh f***" situation. Running out of memory is not, neither is battery. A cell phone can't move you at 60mph.

Just out of curiosoty what remedy are you expecting from vzw and/or HTC? Replacing the phone with a redesigned one would take months between the time it took to do the actual engineering work and the HTC testing plus up to 6 weeks of Verizon technical acceptance and that assume that they don't find any problems the first time around. This isnt something as simple as swapping a chip. The cost of all this mind you would be passed onto the consumer with the price of the next phone. Might not be right but we all know that's what would happen. We all complained about the $250 price tag on the Thunderbolt. How would you like to see $300 on the Droid X2 or whatever the next super phone from HTC hapens to be? All to pay for a typo.

If ypu dont like it return thevphoine. They gave us a bigger SD card than HTC advertized. You can install most apps or at least most larger ones on the SD card. Let it go ....

I have nothing to say.
Buy a new windows computer with a 500GB hard drive.
First, it'll have more like 487GB (1000 MB per GB advertised vs. 1024MB per GB actual) and then see how much Windows 7 takes up (around 10 to 15 GB on any and all computers I've worked on/setup)...

I've never heard of anyone calling Dell, HP, Gateway asking why they don't have a 500GB of free space....

I have a brand new PC on my desk right now. 500GB hard drive.
It has all the updated and patches, Acrobat Reader X and Corporate Symantec Antivirus. That's it....nothing else. (Not even factory bloatware) and I have 441GB free of 461 (It has 3.22GB reserved space for the factory image)

441 of 500 is 88% free

2.5 of 8 is 31% free

There is no way to compare it this way.

Yes there is a way to compare it.

When you format any disk, it usually needs around 10% to 15% of space for formatting.

32 GB Card gives you 29.x GB on Thunderbolt.

with 2.6 GB Free, Verizon and HTC are ****ing lairs. Get real people, This Phone does not have 8 GB disk space. They cheated, they are ****ing crooks.

I am going to keep calling Verizon every 2 weeks until they do something about this or compensate me with something else.

You guys all really need to unplug for a while.
It was a general comparison...
Not an apples to apples, exact or replicated math...sheesh.

It was a general statement of:
a. You don't get the advertised capacity due to 1000MB vs. 1024MB = a true GB and
b. The OS takes up some of that drive to begin with.

Thank you for taking the time to do the exact math and point out number for number what everyone else already could figure for themselves.

I'm well aware the % free were not the same.

General statement. Sheesh.

An alternative to that would be to put down the phone and go drinking with your friends once in a while. Same ends (mental satisfaction/release) except out sounds a lot less pathetic when written down.

Let's do it! :)

:) I might just at that, at least when the next latest greatest comes down the pipes. I wanted to love this phone, but...........

Well, you'll have to let me know how it works out for you.

I'd love to get out of my contract, and move to US Cellular. Way cheaper (its even cheaper with the fact that I get a 20% Verizon discount).

The only thing is, I like my thunderbolt more than the Desire....

Any way to break the contract with Verizon and head to US Cellular with the Thunderbolt?

There is no misleading information from VZW or HTC. 8GB is there, you just can't access it all.

Go buy a HDD - you aren't going to be able to access the the "advertised" size (whatever is listed on the box) since part of the drive is reserved. Same thing goes for the 8GB internal TB memory. When I bought my TB I never expected to be able to access the full 8GB. I expected 4-6GB free but 2.6 is not surprising, after rooting your phone and going through the phone's file system there is a lot there (beside just the bloatware). Factor in reserved space for other phone operations and 2-3GB seems about right.

I would expect less reserved space on older phones, but as these things advance, I would not be surprised to see similar available sizes on many other phones from a variety of manufacturers.

Whether its "misleading" is only a matter of whether you feel misled. If there is 8GB installed, then there is 8GB installed. No one ever advertises how much is available to you.

Complain all you want but I've used very little of the internal memory - most of my apps can be moved to the nice 32GB SD card - not a size most companies are packaging in with their phones (most offer 8 or 16).

As someone posted earlier, I would rather take an additional 16GB in SD space in exchange for 4-6GB internal.

BTW, that 32GB card doesn't actually provide 32GB - its more like 29GB. The bigger the space, the more that is taken away from you. Take a look at what is actually available for use on a 1TB HDD - it will blow your mind.

Nope. Cdma carries generally won't activate a phone from anther carrier as the imei of the phone must be in their database and there can be other technical issues even if they want to activate an outside phone.

Because they sold me the phone.

Am I supposed to reach out to the worthless broken Engrish speaking Taiwanese who manufacture the phone?

Or the retailer/service provider who took my money and promoted a phone with 8GB RAM?

8gb Ram! Lol we all wish

It'd be fun to have the on board memory be all ram. Then you could have a new phone every time you restarted.
