[TOOL] - CleanTOOL 2.1 - 12/11 - The Relentless Pursuit of Clean!

Re: [TOOL] - CleanTOOL 2.1 - 12/11 - The Relentless Pursuit of Cl

I'm picking up a Rezound tomorrow and definitely want to do this, it looks awesome!!! Problem is I'm going from an iPhone. While I've jailbroken and modded the crap out of it the process and terms are quite different.

I understand that there isn't a permanent root for this phone, so do I need to do the temp root?? If so where and how is the easiest way to do it. I'm planning on installing LP, so if i'm understanding the thread correct I need this installed before I do this, correct??

I wanted to ask for some help so I don't end up bricking my phone. All help and responses are appreciated!!

Temp root is built into the current script, take a look at the original XDA thread and all should be explained.

Wow this looks really neat and I am really intrested, but unfortunately I have never rooted anything so I have a few questions.

First, everything sound easy to do, but I was just wondering, because it says you must tether root before you can debloat your device, what exactly does that mean. Is there anything I should know when I am carrying arround a tethered device? anything I can't/shouldn't do with it?

Also, I heard that a new version of android, Ice Cream Sandwich, may be coming out in the near future. Would this effect me on getting that update? If so, how would I go about getting it when it is released?

Thanks :D

1.) The root isn't "tethered", you just need to plug your Rezound into your computer via the USB cable you use to charge it in order to run CleanTOOL. This is the rooting process with many phones as well. You'll still be able to use it like you normally did, nothing will change, except that the bloat you chose to disable will be, well, disabled.

2.) Like MrSmith said earlier in the thread, the packages/bloat are still on your phone, they're just disabled. If our future ICS update requires VCast and Blockbuster, and you chose to disable them, it still won't matter, because you didn't actually uninstall them from the Rezound. The OTA with ICS will still go through, and you'll be able to upgrade normally.

Woke up this morning with a VCAST media sync trying to go off. I though this was one of the programs that was shut off?

Re: [TOOL] - CleanTOOL 2.1 - 12/11 - The Relentless Pursuit of Cl

hello. i must be doing something wrong. i disabled bloat and that worked, i don't see those dang blockbuster and other apps now in my app list. hooray!

but when i try to disable sense:

so i tried it several times. i temp root. mount sd card, then select disable sense. then reboot.

once it reboots i get a blank screen, just my wallpaper and the top status bar and touching the screen does nothing. capacitative buttons do nothing. i re-temp root, mount sd card again, then re-enable sense then reboot. i get my homescreen back, i hit home and it asks me which launcher to use (i have adw, adw ex, and sense installed) and now i am back to normal again.

what am i doing wrong.

Ok, turn sense back on. Switch launchers(make sure to set it as default), de-sense (mount sd optional) and reboot. Has worked for pretty much everyone else.

Negative. I'll try to clarify.
1.) Enable Sense (I'm assuming you already have it enabled anyway.)
2.) Menu > Settings > Applications > Running Services > All > HTC Sense > Clear Defaults
3.) Hit the home button. A box will pop up asking which launcher to use. Check off the box at the bottom to set it as default, and click on the launcher you downloaded.
4.) Run CleanTOOL on your phone. (Remember, HTC Sync OFF, Charge Only, Debugging ON, etc etc)
5.) Run Temp Root.
6.) Run disable Sense command
7.) Reboot phone.

You're all set.

No prob. I'm taking on the role of junior apprentice trainee journeyman, or whatever, since I'm not as skilled as you or Scott. *pause for dramatic effect*... or at least not yet.

Nothing wrong with showing off the droid-fu...although this is my favorite part about the whole "teach a man to fish" way that Android works.

I tried this, and yes, it is awesome. Quadrant before clean: a little over 2100. Quadrant after clean: 2248. More importantly, the interface feels much snappier. It raised my available memory from 146 or so to 261.

Sense is kinda cool, but I cant really say I miss it.

Yeah, I will be updating the script later today to pick up some of the missed items.

You can add this line to the script to kill the sync:

adb shell pm disable com.htc.vmm

I love Sense!

Knowledagble rooters, I have a quick question.
I'm 90% sure, or maybe it was my imagination, but I would lose root access when using CleanTOOL after a while. My Superuser icon on my app tray would also vanish. Is this correct, or does it stay? I can't seem to remember.
If it's supposed to vanish, can someone give me a list of triggers for losing temp root aside from a hard reset.

Ah Thank you very much. My Droid-fu is not strong yet. I will get there. By removing all the basic apps you have in your script i now have a question.

If I look in Task Manager (from app page) it states 304 mb free for total memory
If I go to remove apps and then running tab it shows 472 mb (ram) free.

Can someone explain the difference to me?

Re: [TOOL] - CleanTOOL 2.1 - 12/11 - The Relentless Pursuit of Cl

Hi
did the basic bloatware removal and works great, thanks!

now i wanted to de-sense.
Is there anything non sense related functionality that I will lose (eg, screen shots)?
thanks

CleanTool is now using BetterTempRoot which holds almost indefinitely. I've been running 5+ days with it and I'm still rooted. Only thing that's removed root for me is a reboot.

Re: [TOOL] - CleanTOOL 2.1 - 12/11 - The Relentless Pursuit of Cl

Has anyone else had Google Books hidden by the clean tool? I don't recall this being one of the items that is considered "bloat".

Not really a huge concern, I just can't see it in my app drawer anymore. Placed a shortcut on a home screen.

Thanks for clearing it up. But here's the thing, I rebooted my phone twice, and it restarted once because if froze when I was playing a game, but the Superuser icon was still there. I was even able to run CleanTOOL processes without running the temp root first.
So naturally, I'm all excited and junk because the temp root hasn't gone away. I seriously doubt I have a dev phone, but without trying to load up a custom ROM, how would I go about checking to see if the root I have is permanent?

EDIT: I tried a bloatware freezer from the Market, but it says my phone isn't rooted. Hmm...

Dovahkiin the superuser app stays permanently, however the actual superuser access to the OS is what is lost when rebooting. AFAIK you have to re-root every reboot in order to maintain root.
