Where's Froyo for the Fascinate?

I'm unfamiliar with iOS - does Apple allow AT&T to shove anything on their phone? (I doubt it)

Apple doesn't allow any of that. They control everything, which is why it's going to be interesting to see the iPhone on Verizon. Apple needs Verizon's network more than Verizon needs the iPhone (especially with the success of their Android lineup).

On that same note though, you can root (jailbreak) the iPhone, but that's about it. No custom ROM's or anything like that. But, at least everyone gets the latest iOS at the same time. Doesn't matter if you have a 3g, 3gs, iPhone 4 or even an iPod Touch.

I'll still take Android any day though, no matter what version my Fascinate is stuck on.

My hand-held computer didn't come with installation disks. I'd like to wipe my drive and reinstall from scratch, please.

I would have paid say $50 extra (over the $0 I paid ...) to get my phone with just plain jane vanilla Android on-board. If their added bits and bobs are so great give me the option to install them?

Sometimes I wish Google had been a little less "open" in allowing manufacturers and carriers to modify the core OS. I'm unfamiliar with iOS - does Apple allow AT&T to shove anything on their phone? (I doubt it)

Nope, Apple has complete control over the iPhone, all the way down to what goes on it. In fact, from my understanding, AT&T isn?t even allowed to put out their own advertisements of the darn thing. They?re all through Apple.

I'm hoping we will skip straight through to Gingerbread. But at the moment, I'm OK with the OS. The second I get my hands on Froyo or Gingerbread on another phone however... everything will change.

As for the control, I just don't understand how Google has allowed the carriers to do such weird crap with the OS. I don't give a -sorry- about Blockbuster, why can't I delete it!? Even my iPod touch has iOS 4.2...

There are 3 reasons why I want Froyo:

1. GPS Fix
2. Ability to save/run apps from SD card
3. Flash

I have tried the fixes mentioned in the forum for my GPS but the only one that works is running GPS Test and after that gets a lock, my GPS works fine, otherwise I have to wait 5 minutes for a lock.

Besides those 3 items I am happy with my phone as is.

Froyo won't fix GPS. That's addressed in the DJ05 maintenance update. It was supposed to be officially released from Verizon right now, but at this rate it's suspected they're bundling that with the Froyo release. You can flash a DJ05 ROM from JT, Sonofskywalker, or XDA to fix that. Many people, including myself, have done this and I can tell you it certainly works.

So it looks like the Epic 4G might be getting the update by Sunday. Maybe the Fascinate won't be far behind?

Droid x just got 2.3, what the crap is that!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!! I am really thinking of returning this phone. Samsung and verizon are really starting to piss me off!!!!!!

Im on a droid x...no 2.3/gingerbread. I wish, but nothing here sorry. Where did you get this information???

There are other apps that won't run below 2.2 in their current version. Gmail and Google Search are among those... :o

Ooooh. If the X is getting 2.3 today, well, that is going to make me a slightly annoyed panda. I can only really blame myself since I made the choice for the fascinate. I just keep hoping Samsung and Verizon will surprise us with a nice update series here soon.

I don't even know what it is like to be updated. I haven't had the pleasure yet!

Can we even trust Samsung to push out Froyo and not brick our phones? I'm beginning to think we are better off running the leaked DJ05 with the GPS fix.

The guy i work with, his just updated this morning. about 4 hours ago.

im telling you i looked at it myself. in your defence, when i say just came out, i mean JUST. as in 4 hours ago.

Actually, no it did not. I'm on the DX and as we JUST got a maintenance update a couple of weeks ago, there's no 2.3 anytime soon. Your friend is either lying or running a launcher that's customized to look like 2.3.

Don't believe me? Go over into the Droid X forum and look for yourself. If there were to be the SLIGHTEST hint of getting 2.3, it would be super busy over there. There is NO sign of it anytime soon, so chill out and enjoy your Fascinate.

My cousin and father are both in the process of dowloading the most recent update, they arn't much to check on updates very often. So if its the couple week old maintenence update than I wouldnt be surprised at all. I guess I'll keep you all posted.

Everything I have been reading on 2.2 (Froyo) has not been all that great on other phones:
"Samsung pulls Froyo update for Bell's Vibrant after reports of fried internal storage"

""There have been intermittent issues reported during the firmware upgrade process with Kies for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000M series of phones. Samsung's development team is currently aware of this issue and working towards a solution. Accordingly, The firmware update feature, which affects the ability to upgrade to Android 2.2, is temporarily disabled until a solution is released. We apologize for the inconvenience."

I would rather have a working phone with no update vs. a paperweight with an update.

Thats exactly why when Froyo does drop I won't be jumping all over it until I see what some others experience with it are. I rely on my phone, I don't need it turning into a $200 paperweight.

I am in the same boat. Once Froyo drops, load it up 2-3 days to get a general feel of how the os is. This is the same thing I did when I loaded leaked Blackberry os to my S2.
