"Whole" Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I think the Samsung hole(s) look kind of cool actually. Hate the notch look. How anyone can even compare the two is beyond me.

You realize it can be both, right? The 'hole punches' are an advancement from the notch, and both are a stopgap until the technology is there for true full screen devices.

Exactly. You can't have a temporary solution without advancement to fill that role. Otherwise, we'd still have huge bezels every year, and companies wouldn't even try to innovate. They'd just release the same phone every year.

I swear it's not even about the hole punch anymore. People just want to be right. 😂

That then begs the question, what makes a full screen device inherently better than something with bezels? Screen to body ratio is just a numbers game. The downsides have already been pointed out, but I've yet to see any upsides presented beyond bragging rights. If that's what you want aesthetically, then by all means go for it, but don't confuse that with being better all around with no downsides.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

The iPhone notch goes almost across the entire top screen. I'm trying to understand why you think the little hole on the far right bothers you so much ?

There are plenty of YouTube videos where iPhone fanatics are praising the s10 hole.

As someone who owns an iPhone and a note 9 I think the location of the hole is way better than the iPhone.

Studies have also shown how the human eye tracks reading. You tend to always look to the left when reading and watching.

No disrespect

Does anyone remember the LG V10? I absolutely loved that whole "second screen" thing. It was exactly like what Sammy's doing here--they had an area up top that wasn't full width, that stoopped where the camera was, and which LG dedicated to ancillary usage--notifications, applets, and so on.

It was really physically part of the main screen, but LG treated it completely as a "second screen". I absolutely loved it. Some hated it; they kept screaming, "but...but...but...mah screen! Must use all of it for main content! This is BS!"

If Sammy gives me the option to use that strip next to the cameras as a secondary screen area separate from what's below the cameras, doing ancillary work, I'm all over that. It looks from the videos, though, that you can choose to use that area as part of the main screen. If I have the choice of how to use it, that's a winner all around.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

The point is both are disruptive to content and at a minimum, the area with the notch, hole whatever, should not be part of the display spec size. Using the 10+ briefly confirms my view that the thing is lame. In fact, a reason I left the title misspelled is to match the lameness of the hole. :)

Notches? Hole punches? I detest both. Samsung has seen pop-up phones for a while now, and had the opportunity to adopt something impressive. They didn't. Hopefully they will for the Note 10. 🙏🏾

... And then you'll be mad when they charge 1,500.00 for it smh

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

It's about the same actually. Same function, different shape.

While still not completely sold on the design, having seen it in person yesterday I will concede that it's not that bad - certainly something I imagine you won't even notice in a week or two.

I had it briefly.

I prefer functionally that doesn't put a whole in the screen.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

That's what I meant. Because the alternative is to either hold on to your old phone until it dies or deal with the cut out. There are no other choices (unless you go elsewhere where you can get a REAL notch😂)

We knew this was coming. We've known at least 6 months. I don't understand the gripping now.

Because I didn't until this week?

Totally agree. IMO it's because the pixel3 XL has a notch, so Google fans now have to defend the notch. Whereas before, I'm sure most pixel users rolled their eyes at iPhone. The notch seemed to be the wave of the future, but now no so much hopefully.

I actually don't keep up with the Pixel line. I am just not in favor of removing useful features in order to introduce what is mainly a gimmick.

If they did not throw out the iris scanner and led notification, then it wouldn't be a problem for me.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I honestly thought the mockups months ago were a parody of the other phones having a notch. Turns out it's real and makes notches seem great in comparison. IMO Samsung made an even worse design than the notch. Considering the price and the oddly placed display hole, do you think Samsung should be shocked if sales are lacking?

Typed this with my Note 9.

Completely disagree it is way better than some dumb notch.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Just a reminder .. disagreeing is fine but once it starts going down to insulting and belittling others for simply having a different opinion is when issues will arise.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I went to Best Buy and saw it in person. That hole is impossible to not see for myself. Especially because its off to the side on the s10+. Its like hey check out this beautiful display, oh and here is the very very noticeable hole that you cannot not see unless the screen is black. Had they just slapped in the middle on all models I may consider the phone. I will just stick with my notch for the time being.
