Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

You realize it can be both, right? The 'hole punches' are an advancement from the notch, and both are a stopgap until the technology is there for true full screen devices.
That then begs the question, what makes a full screen device inherently better than something with bezels? Screen to body ratio is just a numbers game. The downsides have already been pointed out, but I've yet to see any upsides presented beyond bragging rights. If that's what you want aesthetically, then by all means go for it, but don't confuse that with being better all around with no downsides. You realize it can be both, right? +100The iPhone notch goes almost across the entire top screen. I'm trying to understand why you think the little hole on the far right bothers you so much ?
There are plenty of YouTube videos where iPhone fanatics are praising the s10 hole.
As someone who owns an iPhone and a note 9 I think the location of the hole is way better than the iPhone.
Studies have also shown how the human eye tracks reading. You tend to always look to the left when reading and watching.
No disrespect
The point is both are disruptive to content and at a minimum, the area with the notch, hole whatever, should not be part of the display spec size. Using the 10+ briefly confirms my view that the thing is lame. In fact, a reason I left the title misspelled is to match the lameness of the hole.+100
Notches? Hole punches? I detest both. Samsung has seen pop-up phones for a while now, and had the opportunity to adopt something impressive. They didn't. Hopefully they will for the Note 10.![]()

It's about the same actually. Same function, different shape.
Does anyone remember the LG V10? I absolutely loved that whole "second screen" thing. It was exactly like what Sammy's doing here--they had an area up top that wasn't full width, that stoopped where the camera was, and which LG dedicated to ancillary usage--notifications, applets, and so on.
It was really physically part of the main screen, but LG treated it completely as a "second screen". I absolutely loved it. Some hated it; they kept screaming, "but...but...but...mah screen! Must use all of it for main content! This is BS!"
If Sammy gives me the option to use that strip next to the cameras as a secondary screen area separate from what's below the cameras, doing ancillary work, I'm all over that. It looks from the videos, though, that you can choose to use that area as part of the main screen. If I have the choice of how to use it, that's a winner all around.
I think the Samsung hole(s) look kind of cool actually. Hate the notch look. How anyone can even compare the two is beyond me.
That's what I meant. Because the alternative is to either hold on to your old phone until it dies or deal with the cut out. There are no other choices (unless you go elsewhere where you can get a REAL notch)
We knew this was coming. We've known at least 6 months. I don't understand the gripping now.

Totally thought agree. IMO it's because the pixel3 XL has a notch, so Google fans now have to defend the notch. Whereas before, I'm sure most pixel users rolled their eyes at iPhone. The notch seemed to be the wave of the future, but now no so much hopefully.
I honestly thought the mockups months ago were a parody of the other phones having a notch. Turns out it's real and makes notches seem great in comparison. IMO Samsung made an even worse design than the notch. Considering the price and the oddly placed display hole, do you think Samsung should be shocked if sales are lacking?
Typed this with my Note 9.
