"Whole" Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I went to Best Buy and saw it in person. That hole is impossible to not see for myself. Especially because its off to the side on the s10+. Its like hey check out this beautiful display, oh and here is the very very noticeable hole that you cannot not see unless the screen is black. Had they just slapped in the middle on all models I may consider the phone. I will just stick with my notch for the time being.

You can in settings black it out with the rest of the notifications

You find a notch which is 20x the size of the holes we're talking about to be less noticeable or intrusive than a small hole(s) on the top right of the screen?

That's a real head scratcher.

That then begs the question, what makes a full screen device inherently better than something with bezels? Screen to body ratio is just a numbers game. The downsides have already been pointed out, but I've yet to see any upsides presented beyond bragging rights. If that's what you want aesthetically, then by all means go for it, but don't confuse that with being better all around with no downsides.

It's been discussed ad nauseum: full screen devices allow for smaller devices with the same screen size. Currently, manufacturers have chosen to increase screen size and keep device size the same, but once the tech is there we'll start seeing devices shrink too.

So one negligible benefit (are the masses really going to nitpick that extra couple of mm screen size?) compared to the several downsides that impact real world usage and durability of the phone? That's not advancement. That's a trade-off. A bad one in my opinion.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

In real life, it looks way better than what you think. I had some time with it and it was a non issue. Dont even see it

But now that we've achieved peak no-bezel, how will Sammy et al. attract people with their next generation phones? It won't/can't be bigger screens without increasing the physical size of the entire thing. They'll have to invent some other something to try to get people to think they can't live without.

That all being said, my son didn't want something the size of what everyone (including Apple!) has determined the market "wants". So he's rocking a Sony XPeria compact--which is cool. Flagship specs, well known high quality manufacturer (not Chinese junk), but in a small form factor. I think other manufacturers are missing the boat by not doing that.

And I think Apple recognizes that, too. They've been dumping "refurb" iPhone SE models lately; I suspect it's because they know there's a large audience for high quality, yet easily pocketable, devices. Not everyone cares to jump on the MOAR BIGGER SCREEN bandwagon.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I'd like to chime in on the notch vs hole punch. I am an Apple X user. Got it the day it came out. Came from the pixel2. The notch is terrible compared to the hole punch. Not even close. The notch on my iPhone takes up so much of the screen. Lousy. I was blown away at how much crisper and brighter and sharper the S10 is compared my X.

Yeah, my iPhone XS (which I love) looks so dated next to the S10.

Its not even close right? My home screen pic when compared to the home screen pic I loaded on the demo unit wasn't even close. The X looked so grainy and inaccurate. I absolutely despise sms messaging so that will be my only drawback to making the switch but the notch compared to the hole punch isn't even close IMO

Rcs well be the norm in about 15 months hopefully lol

what they'll do next is the no-bezel with no-holes- when that tech advancement arrives and supplants this stop-gap notch/hole bs (and hopefully it'll be quickly), i'll trade up from my S9+. not before.

Eh, you'll be waiting forever. Next time there will be something else that's a "deal breaker". They'll always be something.

Not negligible at all. Consumers have shown an interest in larger screens. A downside to that has been the device size also increasing. Full screen devices remove that downside.

The double hole punch messing the gorgeous display seems more the head scratcher, IMO. That part of the display should be removed from the display size spec, since impacts media and content. Call it a notification section, whatever. The beauty here though is choice. First time since the sd card removal year that I'm not buying. Hopefully sales are low enough to offset this design decision for the "11" models.

Doesn't impact app content since they can't use that area anyways. Media you have a point, but it it still letterboxed because of the aspect ratio anyway. I'm not sure how you propose they would calculate the screen size with that area removed, since screen size is a diagonal measurement.

Consumers have shown an amazing ability to blindly follow what marketing tells them they want.

There is a segment of users who have their own ideas of what they want, but device makers are not listening.

Maybe the recent device sales slowdown actually means that these consumers aren't really buying into the bigger screen to body ratio thing, much less the increasing price tag for these things. Guess we'll have to see what happens as this year progresses.

The sales slow down is due to market saturation and manufacturing quality getting to the point where devices don't need to be replaced every two years.
