"Whole" Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

It would become a notch.

Exactly. The whole point of the hole punch is to shrink the notch to something reasonable. Had they kept the Iris sensor and everything else, the notch would look just like the iPhone's

Do you know how big the hole punch would have to be for those components?

Depends on how they integrate them. Hopefully they will fix that by either the Note 10 or 11. If not then I will just have to deal with the new fps. It will be annoying, but doable. Notifications will be a lot less helpful.

Fine. Can we get rid of it completely? With those features gone, I will be left with an annoying blemish on the screen that has no function.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

No we're talking about the market as a whole. Normal people aren't going to give a darn about the hole.
I'd counter that with more will keep their devices this year, so will likely offset that as well. The 9 series rocks crazy and no hole.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

The hole punch is definitely better than the Notch but they both still suck. But eventually we'll get to the point were the screen will cover the cameras and then turn off the where camera holes are when the camera is active. That's ultimately the best solution.

Though I hear that's possible I'd like to see where it's explained on how that works. Would that method limit light gathering in any way?

Edit:. It's only for selfies so I'm not too concerned but it will probably work.

It has a function. It houses two cameras.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Yet I still have quite a bit of screen with the notch. I also have an iris scanner and notification led...

I end up with a little less screen space and more functionality.

with my S9+, i've a 6.2 beautiful screen, minimal bezels, iris scanner, notification led, no hole, no notch.. no compromises. why wld i "upgrade"? -lol

So there is an option to fully hide the punch hole by making the screen shorter. Not sure how I feel about that tho.

Yeah, dumb move just like the Pixel 3XL. The One Plus Six does it right. There are 3rd party apps that keep the notifications in line with the notch on the Pixel so it's not bad but I I don't use the app. I'm not sure if they are compatible with The S10s but I have a feeling there will be something available. I can't believe that Google and Samsung think it's better to hide the cutouts by going with a giant bezel that has not much built into the display. I know that Google does consumer research with product testing and imagine Samsung has a similar program. I can't believe consumers didn't complain during the research unless they are selecting too many average Joes.
For myself, the notch never bothered me after seeing on my daughter's iPhone and it didn't bother me in the Pixel so Idon't disable it. When I first saw the punch hole and then saw the double punch hole I thought it was a bit weird but in person it's not so bad. If the price drops and I pick up an S10 plus I don't intend to disable the the hole either. Some people can't get used to it and I get that, but it's just not a deal breaker for me I'd a device does pretty much what I expect it to do.

I'm not at all concerned about the hole, but that the 9 series rocks crazy is stone cold fact.

My buying the 10+ is crazy, given how great my 9+ is. I may end up keeping it instead of trading it in, or maybe cancelling my order entirely, sticking with the 9+ for now, and just waiting a few months for another stupid-great Costco deal like what got me the 9+ in the first place.

Much smarter move waiting in many ways. I should do they same instead of pre-ordering but sometimes the excitement gets the best of us.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Exactly. I also find it hilarious that phone nerds who follow the release of every phone would have the gall to make fun of people who take selfies.

Glass houses...

Not making fun of people. I just never saw the appeal. Especially after some of the sad outcomes that have resulted from it.

And since they remove the only useful features, for me, then the hole punch is simply a useless eye sore.

I guess I could just blank out the screen around it.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

That will have to suffice.

I'm going to try it also to see how it feels with virtual bezels but that defeats the purpose of the full screen

I'm hoping I just get used to the cutout lol

The punch also defeats that purpose. I can deal with an annoying blemish or I can fix it with the screen. The damn things aren't going anywhere, so I just have to learn how to fix it before I upgrade.
