Why a 16MP camera is better than 12MP

View attachment 279434

Yes they are both crap but one is crappier due to lower resolution.
So both are crap but because one is ever so slightly less crap that means manufacturers must put 16 MP for that small amount of people who crop pictures to crap spots like this?

I don't see manufacturers catering to that. Or wanting to.

That's probably not due to lower MP resolution. More likely a shakey hand. Could easily get the V20 shot to look like the S8, and vice versa.

Not true. I tried capturing texts on a white board using zoom, the S8 was unable to show the text while the V20 could. I haven't taken enough samples to show but there's a quality difference.

I think LG purposely chose the 16MP over 12MP because of their primary focus on video creation on the V series... the pan to zoom features allow users to zoom into an object smoothly. Higher resolution megapixels matter when a user is zooming into a subject from far away and a 16MP helps greatly with that. But the 16MP has its disadvantages too like slower focus speed and smaller sensor. Me personally, I dislike the 12MP no matter how good the photos look.. because I sometimes crop and zoom and there's a loss of detail and sharpness with a 12MP.

A great example of when one would use cropping is when they crop someone's head from a group photo. Another example is when LG upgraded their 8MP wide angle camera to 13MP and it made a huge difference.. it really does and people notice.

But you said you take a these types of shots all the time. Do you have some of your nature shots that prove your point?

You talk about how much better it is zooming in.. yet the evidence you provide doesn't back up your claims. Both pictures we're readable and both were absolutely horrible quality.

I still see no examples of this amazing 16 MP you claim versus a 12... And I really doubt I am going to at this rate.

Yep that's what I'd like to see but doubt we will. The only example we've seen shows nothing to back up his claims.

They are more than just better on paper. LG's saving grace is its manual mode, however most people like to shoot auto and LG just can't cut it there. Of course if you use the Pixel ports that helps.

I'm really enjoying the Pixel 2 camera app on the V20 but sometimes pictures can look too artificial and colors are over exaggerated but I guess that's what people like to see. It does a great job on auto mode though and making photos appear sharper.

I know photography nerds are loathe to trust DXO and that DXO doesn't know that LG exists, but they do have some comparisons of the quality of zoom photos among devices with different MP counts... has anyone looked to see if there is a correlation between MP and the specific zoom score?

Not really

That specific test favors cameras with dedicated zoom camera modules.

A higher MP count does affect the score but only barely

No matter how many times you say it....16 megapixel isn't always better than every 12 megapixel cellphone Camera. Even with 2 sensors that are the exact same size it is not always true. In the case of the LG its especially not true because of their smaller sensor compared to other brands. There are points of diminshing returns when you increase megapixels. If your theory was correct they would use more than 16 megapixels.

Yeah, it isn't 'always' better.. but in certain situations, yes. All I can say is 16MP produces a higher resolution photo and more pixels and details can fit onto the image versus a 12MP. The 12MP will produce a better photo due to larger sensor but blown up images will have sharpness reduced from low resolution.

One image looks sharper and the edges more pronounced. I don't have the phone anymore so I can't really do another test.

Unedited shot on V20 (quality is reduced on this forum). I remember taking a picture like this on the Galaxy S7 and was very disappointed.. felt like the Galaxy S6 took better pictures with the 16MP... resolution was too low and cropped images didn't look sharp but instead fuzzy and blurred out.

And you don't have any pictures from the ones you claim to take constantly for cropping available? You said you literally do this all the time so I find it interesting you can't produce any evidence to support your claims from your own pictures.

More details don't help if more noise is included... That's the bottom line.

I crop my head from group pictures all the time. The further away, the more pixelated it'll be. I don't want to upload my head on here. I'm pretty sure you guys crop your head from photos all the time. Some people don't like taking selfies but use cropped shots instead.
