Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

I can tell you Google did fix this -- With the 6P they do not allow the US carriers to sell them and therefore they do not need them for anything. When an update comes out -- I get it from Google within a few days (they do it in batches) -- no wait for any carrier.

I bought my Nexus 6 from Amazon not AT&T. My updates come from Google not a carrier. But there has been no explanation from Google why the Nexus 6 hasn't received even Marshmallow 6, let alone 6.0.1.

If you're on AT&T the explanation is AT&T isn't allowing it -- hence they are messing with the updates since they DID sell the phone at one point so they have some say-so. With my 6P there is no say. I am sorry but it really isn't Google causing your issue since the other people on other carriers received the update. The common part of equation is AT&T.

The problem is not related to how you buy the phone but more with what its life experience is. For instance, if you bought an unlocked Nexus 6 phone last year and then proceeded to put an AT&T sim in the phone and use it for a period of time it is likely that AT&T has pushed an update build to that phone while the sim was in it which has now locked that phone into only getting OTA's approved by AT&T (the experience I have with the phone along with thousands of others.) I am pretty sure that is what has happened with us folks on AT&T & I would guess other carriers would do the same if given an opportunity. Just another reason I am migrating to FI in May (even though those users have waited for some Marshmallow as well) when I am done with a 2 year AT&T contract.

Oh I agree that is what happened -- I am just letting everyone know Google has fixed this issue by simply not allowing the carriers to touch the phone (at all) so therefore updates go through without AT&T saying "Oh we blocked it for such and such".

Yup.

Fi is looking pretty good to me too right now, except for the TMo/Sprint part of it lol.

Except that my previous phone was a Nexus 4 that used AT&T towers. So putting in an AT&T SIM card did not mean that updates came from AT&T. All the updates came from Google and were very quickly pushed out. According to a similar discussion at Google productforums, updates for the unlocked Nexus 6 come from Google but there is a delay in AT&T's review that is holding it up. Regardless, Google is responsible for fulfilling their promise of quick Android updates for Nexus devices. It is not happening with the Nexus 6 and Google hasn't explained why - or if all future Android updates will be subject to similar delays with the Nexus 6.

Just made the switch from at&t to Fi. So far I've been in NY metro and Miami metro...very impressed with the service. YMMV of course but I would recommend it.

Well that's the situation I'm in, I bought my 6 direct from Moto, but AT&T happens to be the only carrier that gets coverage at my house (yes I live in a highly populated area, yes I've tried the other carriers) so I'm stuck with them. So I guess I'm gonna pick up a 6p and hope that putting an AT&T Sim in it doesn't effect its update path like it has on my 6. I just shouldn't have to flash every time an update rolls bc AT&T is being ridiculous. But I do love the pure Google Android experience thus far, so I guess I'll try the 6p.

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

Absolutely love this phone (first nexus, just got it recently) and am also at the mercy of at&t with 5.1. Sideloading, flashing etc is somewhat new to me and to be quite honest I don't feel that I should have to go through all of that with a nexus device. Kinda sucks. If at&t doesn't come through with something soon, I'm moving to another carrier.

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

I'm also stuck since even if I felt like flashing updates, the USB plug on this phone wore out so quickly that I wouldn't trust it not to wig out in the middle of the flashing process. Even if I keep a cable pushed in with my fingers, I can barely keep the thing connected long enough to transfer a picture :-/

I have a lot of patience, but it's worn out with this fiasco , at this stage looks like we won't see MM before years end. I love Nexus and have been with AT&T going back to when they bought out Cingular, this tho could be the deal breaker, coupled with bad service in my building that on this device, the texting issues I've had since I got the phone.... Yet, I love this device.....

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

I decided not to wait for the OTA update and I flashed the 6.0.1 factory image on my Nexus 6, which was stuck on build LMY48Z. Nexus users should not have to go through that process but it seems Google is taking extra precautions in the OTA delivery of 6.0.1 because it's been said to be the most significant update so far to the Android system. For those who do not wish to wait, you can use the tutorial I used, which was posted by Twitter user dcogen on theunlockr. I've never flashed or rooted any Android device but his tutorial was so well-made it's easy for even the most timid users.

Did you go from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1? I have build LMY48Z from AT&T on my Nexus 6 and can only find images for the Nexus 9 with that build number.

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

I just bought a nexus 6 off swappa that was a ATT branded phone, the previous owner had it unlocked by ATT. When I received the phone the previous owner had it on 6.0, so I'm assuming he had side loaded it. It also had a non-active ATT sim in it. I connected it to WiFi and checked for an update, but nothing was available. I wanted to test to see if it really was in locked, so I popped in a non-active Verizon sim and it picked up Verizon signal right away (data was blocked due to the non active sim, but I was able to get signal from Verizon towers). As soon as I connected to WiFi with the Verizon sim in the phone I got a notification of an update to 6.0.1.... I downloaded it and installed it, then put my active ATT sim in. No side loading nesicary. We are going to try the same thing on my buddies nexus 6 on ATT running 5.xx we will put this Verizon sim in and connect to WiFi and see what happens.

Well that is interesting - let us know if the Verizon sim in the other Nexus 6 allows the update to happen.

Also interesting, I just bought another Nexus 6 from Amazon and right out of the box (before I put a sim card in) it got a series of updates that brought it to the current 6.0.1. So there must be something, that having put in a sim card that uses AT&T towers, is blocking these Nexus 6 phones from updating to Marshmallow. The unlocked Nexus 6 is a Google device and is promoted by Google to receive prompt updates. The fact that it is not happening is something Google is responsible for. They should not be allowing AT&T to block android updates and should fix whatever the problem is immediately.

And what happens when I put the AT&T sim in the Nexus 6 that has 6.0.1? Will Google allow future android updates for that phone to be held hostage by AT&T.

re: Will AT&T Nexus 6 ever receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Update: YES!

I was on chat with AT&T for a different matter regarding Wi-Fi calling. During our conversation he asked if my Nexus 6 was currently running 6.01. When i answered in the affirmative his reply was: "excellent". He then "implied" that would be a prerequisite for Wi-Fi calling which is scheduled to roll out next month.
My point: While one must take it with a grain of salt it appears 6.01 is imminent for Nexus 6 on AT&T.
Good Luck.

Did you try that SIM swap trick on another N6 yet? I'd thought of that before, but never made an effort to borrow someone else's SIM to try it out. I wounder if it could be that simple, since I have an unlocked phone. Just fire it up with a Verizon SIM (or any carrier SIM that isn't withholding marshmallow) and let the phone check for updates...

For N6 phones on LMY48Y or LMY48Z don't bother. These are AT&T specific builds and there is no update from those builds to Marshmallow - Google can't publish and distribute updates for those builds until AT&T gives the OK. Until updates for these builds are published clearing your cache won't work. Factory Device Resets won't work. Switching carriers or SIM swapping won't work.

Re: No update still for the Nexus 6!!!!

The Nexus 6 was updated to MM on either October 5th or 6th and has been available for 71 days as of 12/16. 6.0.1 has already rolled out to the Nexus 6 via OTA (on all carriers) and has also been posted as factory images. The best advice would be to stop waiting and go install the software. At this point if you don't have the first OTA, there is probably something about the setup on your local device that is preventing the OTA from being pushed or received.

This is not entirely true. All carriers have approved and have sent or are sending 6.0.x OTA updates EXCEPT for AT&T. There are no updates for LMY48Y or LMY48Z available at this time. It has nothing to do with device settings - any Nexus 6 with an AT&T SIM installed running one of these builds will remain on 5.11 until AT&T finally approves the update.
