ZVH OTA update.zip

so, then the real question is...if your phone is still on stock recovery, will update.zip flash the radio or not? because if so, and update.zip doesn't upgrade the recovery, why wouldn't gingerbreak work?

If you are researching how to flash the radio within custom recovery, that would be helpful.

If you are researching ideas on rooting, we already know how to root when the stock recovery is rootable.

I don't have an Optimus handy so I can't test what I suggested to Drew earlier, but in theory it should work.
Ok, now with the radio flashign info you gave me I understand what your saying and what drew is saying. We need to be able to get the radio on the device with stock recovery otherwise custom recoveries cant flash properly. Which is definitely crappy.

Why cant we just use flashimage to write the radio like we did with the custom recovery? When you use flash image I beleive you are bypassing the recovery, correct? Because its an executable that has to be loaded. So why cant we use flash image, flash radio, keep custom recovery, then flash pre-reooted OS?

IM just brainstorming what I can think of. This is going to be so fun when I get out of work!

BTW if anyone is curious, you do *NOT* need to return to stock android (/system) to run the ZVH update. (It won't hurt, but is unecessary) Unlike past "patch" style updates, ZVH contains the full files and will format your /system prior to writing out the new /system files.

You only need to return to stock recovery so the radio can write properly.

This also means you don't need to run all the previous OTA updates to get to the current version. From any current version you can run the ZVH update.

stock recovery is flashing the radio through some means it knows about. There is no "radio" partition to flash_image to.

Yes, I saw that too. And that's why I thought this was going to be a piece of cake until you threw the custom recoveries cant flash radios, lol. See my post above about using flash_img to write the radio img to device? What are your thoughts? Im willing to brick. It doesnt even have activ e service since I got my Evo 3D so i could care less. I will take one for th team if need be.

And when you say brick, can you at least get to emergency download mode or is it a ture brick?

so in other words, instead of going back to v9, vc, or vd, you could simply flash the stock recovery, use the update.zip, and possibly still be able to use gingerbreak to root it?

i've got a spare phone sitting here now. i'm willing to go back to stock recovery and flash it. if it bricks, it bricks.

how do i return to stock recovery can u post a link an if u flash the ZVH update can i get back to cm7 or will i have to wait untill it is rootable

That is my theoretical analysis of the update. I don't have an Optimus on hand to test it.

By using gingerbreak, I mean when booted to the stock *recovery* and connected using ADB.

Drew already confirmed the ZVH *Android* can *not* be rooted with Gingerbreak so that is why you would need to do it from recovery.

My memory is a bit foggy and they may have made changes to ZVD to make rooting the recovery more difficult, in which case you might need to use ZV9 recovery.

When you root the phone you are rooting the OS, not the recovery. I just wanted to throw that out there. In some instance they are perceived to be the same process but they are technically indpendant of each other. You can have a rooted phone with stock recovery and you can have a custom recovery with a non rooted phone.

Also to clarify: In some instances you may need to root the OS via recovery but you are not rooting the recovery. You are simply connecting via ADB in recovery to bypass system junk.

If you have the old LCD you can try the stock ZV9 recovery in the first link in my signature (the reference section at the bottom).

If you have the new LCD you can try the ZVD recovery in the second link.

v9 recovery loaded back on the phone now. downloading update.zip, and i'll apply it in a few. i'll report back :)

Understood, what I suggested to Drew was rooting the OS used to boot into recovery, mounting /system, and installing root support files into /system. I just didn't write all that out.

my stock recovery (v9) doesnt flash the update uploaded here. says signature verification failed

Gotcha! Makes sense now. I thought you literally meant you were going to root the recovery partition, lol...

mine worked fine. v9 recovery, flashed update.zip that i downloaded from here, and it installed.
That could be good, very good. Because you have V9 Recovery! But, can V9 recovery allow access to system to root the OS? I dont know because I was late to the game on the optimus, lol

That's how we used to root VD in the old days before gingerbreak :)
