Anyone get the updated Android Messages App with Web support?

I looked over the website. It's 100% free. They are dedicating their servers and programming time for absolutely nothing. I have to ask myself, "what's the catch? Are 'you' really the product when you register?".

I see the catch after some reading. Textto force updates you to a version that has ads. Then if you want a version without ads, they charge you.

Even though the app updated for me days ago, I just got this functionality. It's pretty awesome. I was surprised to see that somehow even though I'm entering the messages on my web browser that they seem to still be sent through the phone. You can see it's doing something right after you hit send on your computer.

I'm wondering if I'm somewhere with no cell signal but with wifi if I would be able to send a message through my web browser.

Probably not. Or, it depends on your carrier.

While connected and on my PC, I turned my phone OFF.

I get the message:
Not connected to phone
Make sure your phone is on and connected to Wi-Fi or your mobile network.

I turn my phone back on and the PC connection resumes.

Since I'm on Google Fi, WiFi is the same as being connected to a cell tower.

I followed your lead and I now have the option. THANKS!

For those that don't have it, try it out. Settings --> Advanced --> Turn off Auto-download MMS. Go back and click the 3 dots. You can turn on auto-download once you have Messages For Web.

I will test this on my V20 tonight

I just checked my S8+ which initally showed messages for web option. Today, I switched to Android Messages and it was off. I turned off auto download MMS and it was back on!

I think this is the answer!

I finally received the new Messages For Web option this afternoon. Synced right up with my Chromebook and it's pretty cool. Not the greatest tech advancement in modern history, but cool. I can see where this will be handy at times. Good job Google!

@kirstein: I also prefer using Verizon Messages+ on my phone, and I have the Verizon Messages app on my Windows 10 computer. I was wondering if you can get the app on your Chrome Book??

I have the Google Messages for Web on my computer now, and will try it out ... hoping that I like it as much as the Verizon app.

In response to @NMCynthia I live in the UK, so only the main app works for me. The extra Verizon only services don't work for me.

Yeah. This happened to me a lot. I found that when my phone goes into Doze it disconnects. Happens with WhatsApp too. This is why I like the textto app mentioned above.

I finally received the updated Android Messages menu showing "messages for the web", and was able to quickly hook up by two Chromebooks. W/o Kirstein's screen shot showing us what to look for, I would probably have given up on trying to add this feature entirely. Thanks, Kirstein!

If this is truly how it works, that's a swing and a miss by Google
