[CDMA HERO ROM] Gumbo 2.1

Wow i just had read the not so good news. I just got my hero 4 days ago and this is the best, fastest rom ive use so far. and to know they wont be anymore updates to this rom sucks.. i guess we wont see a working camera for a good min..

I know theyre shocking news, but theres already a thread about Gbhils departure. Lets try and keep it on topic here.

Gbhil,

Great to hear that you will stick around and help us out. So now, is there any way you can help us get the .29 kernel that flipz officially released today working with gumbo 2.1? I really like your rom a lot and seems that if I can just get the camera working I would be all set until sprint releases their official version. Again thanks for all you do, and I really hope you reconsider your decision on not creating any more roms. You truly are a genius at what you do. And would hate to see talent like that wasted because of one sour apple. Best Wishes Man!!!

Actually, from what I've seen, the .29 kernel doesn't have the SetCPU functionality. It would be sweet to get that compiled in as well. I'm going to need to start bringing my Linux laptop to work to work on these things (maybe once the kernel code is released).

Awesome that they got the camera working in 2.1 with Sense. What I'd *really* like to see, though, is 2.1 AOSP with the camera working. Barring that, a 2.1 version of Gumbo Bare would be a beautiful thing.

We'll miss your ROMs, that's for sure.

I'll pass. Sounds like the failed Sprint test ROM from last month. Bad issues with the "virtual" APN, which is why it failed. If someone comes across the 2.6.29 dated 2-22 let me know.

I'm just guessing about what he has. I'm not paying for a Linux kernel, regardless of how little or who is asking, so I might be wrong.

That's debatable. The way to start testing it would be to open the Gumbo2.1 zip file and replace the boot image with the one from the new rom with camera. Then open the /system/ folder for each rom, and put the build.prop from the new one into Gumbo.

Resign the zip and copy it over to the card. Make sure your phone is plugged into the computer and flash/reboot. As soon as the HTC logo comes up on the phone, count to 10 and open the adb shell and run "logcat" without the quotes.

It will either boot, or die during the process. If it dies, hopefully logcat gives some info about why.

If it dies, paste up the logcat and we'll all look at it to try to see what's wrong

If it boots, leave logcat running and play with your phone for a while. Any time something looks/acts not right, glance at the last 20 or so lines from the logging window and see if there are any errors. You are looking for things like file not found, permission error, process "xxx" has exited unexpectedly, and the word Error (hopefully).

Can we have an updated radio with this ROM ? how is it going to help ?

I dont think i can use setCPU with this ROM, coz it has sense, i am assuming it has HTC power manager as well ! gbhil, plz correct me if i am wrong..

coming to the radio part, i want to upgrade the radio to check whether I get better battery life out of it. So i want to know wat version to use for both radio and the RA. I dont want to brick my fone, coz it will be impossible to get a replacement fr that in India :D

Many people have reported the radio update flipz released as working on 1.5 and 2.1 roms the same. So far only 1 phone has been reported bricked and that very likely was someone not following instructions.

Any idea of how he modified the radio.img gbhil?

A poorly performing virtual apn would affect data services such as browsing and mms, correct?

I think ur guess is right, coz i wiped data & cache, flashed freshh 2.0b, and was unable to sign in, no browsing, no weather update, no data service basically ! that was enuff for me to move back to gumbo 2.1 :D.. i come back here and read poor APN wud affect the data services !LOL .. i experienced it !!

so do u mean, we can flash the new radio img over this gumbo 2.1a, and which version of radio do we choose?

RE- radio
I'm not sure where he got the radio.img, but I can only assume he didn't modify it in any way. It came from Sprint somewhere. If I lived in India I would not flash a new radio, just in case. :)

RE-setcpu
It should function just fine. This ROM has a customized kernel that uses Linux cpu scaling and not HTC's power managment, just like my 1.5 releases.

RE - APN
Yes and no and maybe lol. The APN is what determines your "address" on the network. CDMA devices don't really have one, but Android uses xml files in the framework to create a fake one. this will affect SMS/MMS, cell triangulation based location services, and voice signal strength, but regular data services may still work as expected once a connection is made. Not really sure on the last bit, need to do some more reading.
