so if I flash that reborn_keypad.zip, that remaps that hardware buttons to google voice search?

No, it stops the front four buttons from waking the phone. Keeps me from butt dialing my father-in-law...

Sent from my phone, damn it!!

Re: For all of you guys wanting to change the wake buttons...

If anyone is interested, I can make a flashable zip that will change these keys automatically from the recovery menu.... I won't make a new thread for it at this point. Just gauging the feedback. If you guys want it, I'll put it together, otherwise, no reason to put it together. :)

Thanks for posting this for everyone to have a reference gilbequick.
I would be interested...would this fix the power up on charge

Wouldn't change that at all. I'm not sure if that's a kernel thing or a ROM thing...

It's not even a bug. It's a feature according to the CyanogenMod team, and I don't really intend on trying to track down what they did that causes it.

You can't charge while powered off on ANY device running CM7.

Clarification:
I was just doing a little more reading on this matter and here's what I've found.

1) It actually IS a bug (in that it is unexpected behavior)
2) Any official CyanogenMod bug reports opened will be closed immediately, because the CyanogenMod team doesn't seem to care (or it's not on their priority list).
3) This bug is not specific to any single device.
4) Even AOSP (the project, not the user) ROMs would have this effect.
5) Fixing this bug is considered by many to be nearly impossible, which could contribute to (2)
6) There is a way to charge your device while powered off (see below)

Charging while powered off:
1) If you plug your device into your computer via the USB cable, then turn the device off it will continue to charge but you will not see a charging screen. Unplugging it and plugging it in again will trigger the device to power on.
2) This does not work with the wall charger (or car charger).

that just means the first person to make a flashable zip so that it boots to a recovery-esque loader for charging wins.

LOL. You are kind to offer, but if they are rooted, running a custom ROM and have played with all the GUI tweaks in CM7 to determine that they want to remap the keys.... isn't editing a text conf file just as easy as flashing another bit? Isn't that like suggesting that someone living in New York should take a cab to Boston to save $75 on an airfare, where you are the cabby and don't get tipped? hehe

There is something I do love about this community, where folks want to do something just because they can. :)

Re: Drew's CM7 builds (stable: 08/09/2011 | experimental: 08/08/2

It's always fun to make things a little easier. :)

With your analogy, you could say that about the roms too. Like, I can offer you this rom that you can flash even though you have the stock one. You do it because you can and it improves the community. If it wasn't for that, where would we be?

Re: Drew's CM7 builds (stable: 08/09/2011 | experimental: 08/08/2

@basketthis: New ROMs are awesome. It's like having a new, snappier, cooler device and I appreciate all the devs do to make them available to us all. I guess my point with the last post was that editing the text file is super easy and doesn't require much more savvy than the user has already demonstrated. Such a minor tweak didn't seem like it merited your efforts in creating a custom flashable. Plus, the fact that I can tweak little things like that with just a text editor is one of the things I love about Linux in general. There are days I would give up my lunch to have it that easy on a Windoze box.

So I am toying with things tonight, trying out new contacts and messaging apps, and flashing the latest Xionia kernel. While I'm at it, I looked at the directory Drew provided for Gapps here and noticed that there are a couple of newer releases. Is there any benefit or incompatibility in flashing the latest version therefrom or should I have just done this weeks ago? Is there a good reason that the first post still links to the 20110613 version? Just asking before leaping.

Yes, that is the last one where all of the apps are compatible. The newer ones and other gapp zips are for different devices or CPU architectures. see the responses to my post above

EDIT:
On my computer now so I can quote the link

The version for June is for the more up-to-date Android builds. It is recommended that you use what is linked in this thread. If you choose to do otherwise, it may cause other issues (as with any disclaimer :p)...

20110613: This package is designed for Android 2.3.4, and will not work on 2.3.3. It contains all of the applications updated for 2.3.4, but does not include the new Google Talk with video chat due to there being no compatible library available for non-ARM7 and non-neon board devices, from Google or another OEM. This package should work on all 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 ROMs, and has the latest Android Market (v2, not the one with video rentals) update in it, which includes in-app purchase support. This package is listed in the above table, ROM Manager, and latest/7/universal. It should be used with ROMs such as CyanogenMod 7.1.0.

There are other reasons to create a flashable zip. Not everybody is as savvy as you. Having a flashable zip also prevents typos and such. Another big advantage of a flashable zip...when you upgrade to newer ROM, you won't have to edit the file again.

Drew with the official gingerbread out I am sure you are going to do wonders with it in regards to a rom. At least that is what I am hoping! You did such a awesome job without the official source.
Maybe sprint visual voicemail will work now.

sent from my CM7 gingerbread Optimus S

Always happy to help, hit that thanks button if I did!

I may make the flashable zip then... lol.

Yep. It should allow things that weren't working before to work. The new kernel already allows the GPS to work properly with CM7!

The issue is that we still don't have the LG Gingerbread proprietary files, and won't get those until Sprint releases an update which may/may not happen soon.

I have built the Google Gingerbread source with the released LG changes included, but by itself produces nothing usable. It will take some hacking to get it to produce something usable without the proprietary files.

I could be mistaken, but that's my understanding of the situation.

Re: Drew's CM7 builds (stable: 08/09/2011 | experimental: 08/08/2

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Most of the bugs and annoyances are not kernel related. What was released was the (L)GPL part of Gingerbread. IOW the kernel and some webkit enhancements and the like. Judging by the P500 changes, most of the drivers didn't change much, if at all. Most of the changes were removing comments, splitting up long lines, or removing code that wasn't compiled ever.

Things like off-mode charging aren't a kernel issue, but rather an init/recovery issue. Seeing as LG will likely never release the source to their initd (and their initd is incompatible with CM7), off-mode charging on the Optimus phones is a ways off.

The new kernel already allows the GPS to work properly with CM7!

Oddly enough, GPS works fine for me with the .32 kernel. The open source libraries work, but drain the battery mercilessly. With the Froyo GPS blobs, GPS works brilliantly for me and I can get an 8m fix inside my house. The only problem I've heard about since reverting back to the stock binary blobs was from someone who had borked the GPS receiver on his phone.

Total n00b here, is it normal after installing this rom for the baseband version to be unknown? Phone seems to be working fine and loving this rom.
