I'm a total Nexus S fanboy. Ask away

I've read the thread over a couple of days and don't remember is this has been asked / answered yet or not. What are my custom ringtones / notification options? On the Palm Pre I could set individual SMS / ringtones for contacts. That way when I get a text from my wife, I know it's her and not a weather alert or something like that. Also, can you set notification tones for each email account you have setup? I've pre-ordered through Best Buy and I want to have my ducks in a row when the mailman delivers my phone. Thanks!

To dual core or not?!

I have a question. I read the forums and tech blogs daily and been seeing a lot about new dual core phones. I am a spec junkie so I'm usually inclined to get the latest and best (and the S4G is not quite there)...but with Android I keep reading about how the software is not optimized for 2 cores so I wonder what's the real purpose of having a dual core phone. I don't do fancy games on my phone. Not only that, even when other phones with android are out it seemed to me that the new software is always optimized for the Nexus phone. I mainly do email and text as well as photos and browsing.

So my question to you fanboy...is do I really need a dual core phone or this nexus s will last me for a while....I'm kind of tired of waiting for a new phone...at least with apple you know what you get and it's pretty much that for a whole year (even in term of software and upgrades)....

Thanks for the help.

For basic email and text, the Nexus (or any of the single-core high end Android headsets out there) is more than capable of handling that for you.

Yes you can. On the contact app you can assign individual ringtones to as many of your contacts as you need.

For SMS, you can install one of the many third-party SMS apps available on the market and assign custom SMS ringtones to your contacts. I use SMS Popup to supplement the stock SMS app on my Evo and can do exactly that.

That one I don't know since I only sync one account on my phone and use the basic gMail app for that. I know there are more robust email clients on the market that many here use, you will need to do some research on the market and find one that fits your needs. The good thing, most if not all of them are free.

You can go directly to market and start researching right away.

I have a buddy who uses an Evo 4g. Compared to that how is the Nexus in terms of performance? I've heard running FroYo and Sense makes the difference noticeable but I thought the Evo was pretty fast in almost all regards.

I'm also curious if you've played around with any of the console emulators. Are those very playable. The same buddy uses a Wii controller to play his emulators and apart from a few N64 games it seems very fluid.

Thanks! Excited to get to play around with this device come next week!

The Evo with Sense is a fast phone in it's own right, but when you run a custom ROM with no Sense or any cpu tinkering, the Evo becomes noticeably faster.

As much as I like Sense eye candy on my Evo, I feel the built-in shells - be it Sense, Touchwiz, Motoblur - consume enough cpu cycles to slow down performance. Unfortunately, the manufacturers make their "software enhancements" so integrated into the OS that is not really possible to turn them off and get rid of them without rooting.

That is one of my main reasons for getting a Nexus - no Sense, Touchwiz or anything else... I can add only those programs I want to enhance my user experience, can fully customize it to my needs and wants and get better performance from my hardware/OS combo.

This tread is killing me!!.....I JUST WANT MY NEXUS S 4G ALREADY...come on Best Buy ship mine early.

You think your dying .... i gotta sit and watch all the Nexus S 4G users while i wait for my upgrade!!! At least you get yours on launch day :'(

I just saw on the web that there is going to be (or maybe it is already out) an update to 2.3.4. Will we be updating our new Nexus phones as soon as we get them?

Is the update a OTA update where you just hit a update button and the phone downloads it and does it all by itself or do we have to do something else to update it? (just coming from a Palm Pre and on the Pre you just hit the update buttton and everything else just gets done)

ya pretty much the same process as the pre. I have owned both.

Loooong time lurker here, this post has been awesome.

I'm a launch day Pre owner, was third in line @ Sprint that morning. The whole sync to the cloud thing captivated me. It's been a good little phone, I've run completely stock and it filled my needs as far as juggling lots of things and staying organized. I'm not a gamer or a big social networking user. I'm mainly looking for speed, lol. Guess I've been lucky as my only hardware issue is the little port cover fell off a few weeks ago!

I have my 2yr upgrade burning a hole in my pocket and have decided to move to an Android phone, I'll wait and watch on WebOS. I am kind of OCD/hyperorganized and the main question I have is coming in as an absolute newb will the NS4G be easier for me to adapt to than the Evo3D?

I'm all ready pretty sure of what apps I want and if I understand right 'plain vanilla' is a nice clean slate to start with out of the box without having to do any tweaking? I can see myself losing it trying to wrestle with a new OS filled with bells and whistles I don't need or understand and I'm not looking to get into rooting until I'm feeling comfortable.

Thanks again for a great thread.
I think you'll prefer the Nexus S. I've used an EVO lots with Sense and with Cyanogenmod, and I much prefer the vanilla experience. I can't stand all of the bloatware that comes with it, and I like to set things up MY way and have them just so-- which is easier to do with vanilla Android.

That, and after having an EVO in my pocket for a few weeks, I'm ready to have something a little less flat and square in there.

Thats one of my main criteria, how does it feel in the hand and in your pocket - heavy might give you the false sense of quality, but high quality and light in the hand with comfortable rounded corners and light when carrying around in pocket is key for me! :D ;)

It's my understanding that the Sprint version either will ship with 2.3.4, or update as soon as your turn it on and connect to a data source. Needs the "WiMax Stuff" Google has added.

Hi gbhil.

Could you please provide a link to the all flat black wallpaper in this pic of your phone ?

Also, I love the minimalistic style of your phone, very stealth cool. What is that clock widget, and how did you get it that green /

Thanks
Wallpaper is attached, it's just a black square. The clock is beautiful widgets. Don't remember which skin though.

Thanks gb. Is that color green custom or part of the Beautiful Widgets ? And how did you get it up in the right hand corner ?

Ok, with the Nexus S coming out on Sprint in a couple days, and Verizon talking charge with LTE and showing some seriously contenders with their Android Line up, I wanna know how many licks would it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Thanks for your help with this dilemma in advance! ;)

not gb, but I hope you don't mind the help, I believe that green is the green that is default color in the app and you can designate the size and location of the individual widget on your screen.

i actually do have a question for you though. how does the file system work with the internal storage? is it the same as on a microsd card? do you plug in your ns and then connect as usb and it shows as one drive?

thanks again.

Actually now that I think about it, I might have been describing the app 'minimalist text's

Sorry for the confusion.
