In screen Fingerprint scanner results

Coming from a S21, the FPS works well but I hate it during the night while in bed. Really annoying that strong light.

How do you mind the pixel so far considered to the S21? I know it's early but initial impressions

The fingerprint reader on my P2 never really worked (old, dry, crosshatched fingers, as I live in the desert Southwest), so I have always used a PIN. If the print reader doesn't work on the P6/6Pro, using a PIN will be no big deal to me. I was sure hoping for facial recognition though!

I applied a screen protector (NOT glass). Did not need to register the fingers again. Works flawlessly. I sound stupid, but the fail rate is much lower than S21 Ultra. Its just takes a split second more than S21 U, that's it.

So is it safe to assume the fingerprint scanner will have a lot of issues if a tempered glass screen protector is applied?

This sounds ridiculous like the typical person trying to defend a phone lol. Ppl are not asking for a phone to be flawless but a FS that works, I don't think that's too much to ask. I mean that's how you unlock your device and it can be annoying if you try multiple times and it doesn't work.

I have no reason to defend the phone because I didn't design it. All I'm saying is that if you expect perfection from every aspect of your phone, enjoy your never ending hunt for that perfection. There will always be some part of it that will fall short to some degree, and it's up to you to decide if that's a deal breaker in your own use case. If you miss the forest for the trees, so be it. All I'm saying is remember the things that got you excited about the device when you ordered it and don't be so quick to allow yourself to surrender that excitement after paying so much for the phone. Were you excited about the Pixel because it had an under the glass FPS or was it the camera advancements and the possibilities? Only you can answer that. I understand the FPS is a huge deal for a lot of people, and if so, return it. No harm, no foul.

I've also noticed I didn't have this turned on..increase touch sensitivity which might help some with the scanner ..

I don’t have a screen protector and did switch this setting on, does feel a little snappier.

No idea if there are any issues using this setting without a screen protector but I am leaving it on for now.

Yup yup let's see if any negative impact somewhere..

I find it fine when my finger is dry. Any type of moisture or dirt /dust it doesn't read very well.

Registered thumb several times and seems to work okay just have to hold it there for a second. Still keep putting index finger on back looking for scanner and to swipe down for notifcations

I work in biometric fingerprinting (we sell the hardware and software, which we developed, for state and federal background check digital fingerprint submission). Optical fingerprint scanners do not work well on dry fingers. Almost everyone will need some kind of ridge builder.

If you make sure to keep your hands moisturized in general it should make a difference, as should holding your finger on the scanner for a 2-count or so.

We recommend Corn Huskers Lotion because it's inexpensive, non-greasy, and a small amount will keep your hands moisturized for hours. In a pinch you can swipe your finger on your forehead or nose and pick up a little skin oil.

Thank you for posting this. Can I ask you a question? What is the difference in how the two different Pixel finger print readers work. I'm referring to the current in screen on the Pixel 6 and the rear finger print reader on the Pixel 5. Thanks!

Great to see some tips here ...I guess I'm well moisturized now bc I'm getting no hiccups on scanner ...haha

Good to know. There are usually some tweaks you can use to “speed up” the sensor. Or at least speed up the perception of it. I wonder if futzing with animations would help. I know on the Samsung devices there was some toggle you could switch that would, I think, make the device “be on the lookout” for biometric authentication more often. It hits battery life a tiny bit but makes the sensor feel more responsive.

When it works it is slow but ok but it is super inconsistent. I just had it fail 4 presses in a row and work on the 5th, other times so far it will work almost first time every time (almost). I'd estimate on average I am in the 50-75% hit range. Some kind of face unlock really would have softened the blow here IMO.

I am looking at my Pixel 5 (still not sold) and wondering what I will lose going back to it TBH
