[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is my current situation:

I am on the NATIONWIDE TALK SHARE 700 plan w/ 2 phones.

Line 1 (my wife) - Samsung Galaxy S5 with UDP - Contract end date: 06/25/2016. I did the purchase via Best Buy last year and kept the UDP by doing it online and cutting my SIM.

Line 2 (my parents) - Non-Smart phone with no data plan

What I want to do:

I want to get either a Galaxy S6 (or Active if it comes out soon) or an LG G4 for me AND, if possible, an iPhone 6 for my daughter. I would rather pay the monthly "Edge" fee rather than buy them outright at full price but would also commit to a new 2 year contract to get the cheaper one time pricing.

Mine would be a ported in # from Boost Mobile and my daughter's would be a net new phone all together although I could set her up on a new Boost mobile account and then port that over if there is a better way to port than activate new. I am ok switching #'s around for the 2 existing lines and my ported in line (they are all just one digit off from each other: XXX-XXX-XXX7, 8 & 9)

I would like to work it in such a way as getting UDP for all 3 smart phones and either add a replacement non-smart for my parents or just buy them a Pay As You Go non-smart phone which could be a separate plan.

I am also hoping I can make use of the Verizon $100 statement credit and the trade-in program and maybe any Best Buy offers (mover's coupon, GC for the G4, etc).

I thought the Best Buy loophole was closed but apparently it still seems somewhat viable. However, given the nature of what I want to do, I'm not sure I can make it work.

Thanks everyone!!

The short answer is that I seriously doubt you will be able to get two unlimited data plans. Your only hope for something like that is to purchase a plan off eBay and hope to sneak it through the AOL department at Verizon. Otherwise, there is no way of getting an unlimited data plan from Verizon unless you are a certain type of business customer.

As for porting your numbers, that's an easy thing that can be done online or in-store.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was hoping I could exchange upgrades from the non-smart phone to the S5, then use the G4 or S6 as the "upgrade" and have the UDP that was on the G5 transfer over to the G4 or S6 and still keep the UDP on the S5 by keeping the SIM in it or something along those lines. ;)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! Just wanted to check in and see if the BB method still works. Here's my situation: I have a 2013 Moto X with unlimited data and I have an upgrade available. My 4 family members all have 2 GB plans and one of them has an upgrade. Should I just use my own upgrade with the Best buy method? Please confirm: if I upgrade through the website to a Galaxy S6, I can have it shipped to me house, swap Sims before turning it on, and activate the phone while keeping my UDP?

Has anyone done this recently? I really want to keep my unlimited data and I'm paranoid about this and would love some feedback. Should i try using my father's upgrade and swapping sims when the phone arrives, or is using my upgrade still safe? Thank you.

Best buy method still works. Just use your upgrade and swap Sims before you turn it on

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Okay I'll give the BB method a shot. Is it true that BB randomly checks to see if people are exploiting this, as mentioned in a previous post? Of course I have Verizon.

Also have any of you gotten caught months later? Is it possible for Big Red to find out that you did that and revoke your unlimited data whenever they please?

Best Buy does randomly check. If you get an email saying to contact them, then cancel your order.

As for Verizon checking, I wouldn't worry about it. Verizon, at any time, can cancel your unlimited data or move you to a tiered plan. It's in the Term of Service that you agree to. If you are under contract, Verizon is required to waive any ETFs you might owe if you want to leave.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm back again to this amazing thread! The time has come for me to order my LG G4. I'd like to order through BestBuy to take advantage of BestBuy's $100 gift card offer when you purchase the LG G4 through them.

Current State:
  • Line 1: Android Smartphone (LG G2) - Unlimited Data - No Upgrade - My Phone
  • Line 2: Dumb/Feature Phone - Upgrade Available - Mom's Phone
  • Line 3: Dumb/Feature Phone - Upgrade Available - Uncle's Phone
From what I understand from my posts before... If I order through BestBuy, as long as I don't directly upgrade Line 1 I am completely safe. Preferably I'd like to leave Line 2/3 as non-data plans. My plan is to purchase my LG G4 via the BestBuy website on Line 2. When it arrives I'll swap the SIM on my LG G2 to my LG G4 and activate the phone on Line 1's number. Is going in in-person better?

After My New Phone State:
  • Line 1: Android Smartphone (LG G4) - Unlimited Data - No Upgrade - My Phone
  • Line 2: Dumb/Feature Phone - No Upgrade - Mom's Phone
  • Line 3: Dumb/Feature Phone - Upgrade Available - Uncle's Phone
In the future Line 2 would also like to be a iPhone plan so as I understand it I can transfer my Line 3 upgrade to Line 2, and upgrade Line 2 to be a Data Line and purchase the iPhone on Line 2.

Final State:
  • Line 1: Android Smartphone (LG G4) - Unlimited Data - No Upgrade - My Phone
  • Line 2: iPhone 6 - No Upgrade - Mom's Phone
  • Line 3: Dumb/Feature Phone - No Upgrade - Uncle's Phone
Does all of this sound correct? I can tackle the iPhone 6 portion at a later time, but I'd like to move on the LG G4 as soon as possible.

The first post should work. As for the second part you won't be able to transfer the dumbphone upgrade and get a smartphone. I would use line 3's upgrade to get the G4. Then just upgrade line 2 to a smartphone later.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Called Verizon Loyalty Department and apparently anyone(in good standing) with Unlimited Data can get the $15 30 Min Loyalty plan, to make your plan $45 with Unltd Data and 30 min(no texts), and just use Google Voice/Hangouts with Unlmtd Call/text in US with Data.. It does put you in contract for 1 year with out of contract customers or if your currently in contract just resets your 2 year contract no later than 1 year in. Its going to save me $70+ a month! Just a quick FYI for all you UDP users!

I've thought about doing this for home internet service. There's a thread on Howardforums about it. You get the $15/30 minute plan applied to a UDP line, and then put the SIM card in a hotspot device. It would be cheaper than my cable internet and 3x as fast. I wish I would have grabbed another line to AoL back when the lines under contract were free!

I agree with Mr. Toad's advice. Additionally, do not go in-store as the reps will not allow it. You must do this from home.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am looking to upgrade my HTC One M7 on the UDP to the LG G3 and am planning to order it through Best Buy. Here's my current Family Plan:

Line 1 - Unlimited Data (HTC One M7) - eligible for upgrade
Line 2 - Tiered Data (iphone 6)- non eligible
Line 3 - Dumb Phone - eligible for upgrade

What's the easiest way to upgrade line one without losing the UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a question. Here's my current setup:

Nationwide Family Share 700
Line 1: iPhone 5s 2gb data plan
Line 2: iPhone 5s unlimited data plan
Line 3: dummy phone, basic.
All lines have upgrades available.

I want to upgrade to an iPhone 6 on Line 2 (UDP). Is this possible and how do I achieve it.

Easiest is way is upgrade line 1. You can then activate it on line 1 for a little while. Then just swap the sims to the appropriate phones.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I know I am going to want to upgrade Line 1 soon after for my wife's new iPhone 6 as well. Is there a way to use the dumb line?

Upgrade the line, do not turn on the phone or charge it. Destroy the SIM out comes with. Put your unlimited sim into the phone. This will avoid the data on the tiered line. I have only done this through apple but have read it will work from Verizon.

You should stick with the first method that Mr. Toad suggested and use the upgrade that is already on Line 1. When your wife is ready to upgrade, you can just transfer your upgrade on Line 2 to Line 1 through Verizon or Best Buy.

You'll be fine. For some people it shows up, for others it does not. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. Your plan isn't changed until you activate the SIM that is shipped with the S6. If you bypass that SIM by using your old one, you'll be fine. Just make sure you do not want to make any plan changes in the next month or so in order to allow time for the pending activation to fall off.

It's fairly straightforward. Just do the following:

1.) Order the G3 through BestBuy.com and transfer your upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2. Basically, you want to "upgrade" the tiered line. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, activate it on the tiered line following the directions that come with the phone.
3.) Wait at least an hour to make sure the G3 works as it should. Now power it off
4.) Log into Verizon online and reactivate the iPhone on the tiered line (under switch or activate a device).
5.) Finally, activate the G3 on the unlimited data plan.

Great Thank you ! - I will order myself a new S6 from BB today and see how it goes
