I agree. I hate using a plastic screen protector, particualrly when I am playing games. Glass is so much smoother and much closer to actual glass of a screen. They do however add weight and thickness so I can see why some may not like it. I have a glass screen protector on my iPhone, and a plastic one on my Nexus 5. I switched out to glass on the iphone and did not feel any issues with brightness because of it. I must admit however that I havent rocked a bare phone in some years now so don't know how modern screens perform against the routine scratches etc.
I have not used a screen protector since my palm pre (it was so cute that I felt like I needed to protect it from the world), which means many different android phones over the years with evolving variations of gorilla glass. I have never used screen protectors or cases to absorb impact. My old nexus 5 and current htc one m8 were dropped, dinged, thrown, stepped on, carried in pockets full of coins and keys, thrown in backpacks, and every method of abused. Both have a few little scruffs on the corners of the phone from "big" drops on asphalt or something, but neither has ever had so much as even a microscopic scratch on the screen. Gorilla glass does it's job, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
