LG G3 Overheating warning?

One of the editors of Android Headlines LAUGHED when I expressed my concerns about this issue in one of their Google+ posts before the phone was even released. Sad when they get too cozy with the advertising dollars to give honest reviews.

Even more sad that the issue is, in fact, a real concern. Is this phone good enough to see me through two more years? It doesn't look like it.

The reviews of this device showed who give real thorough reviews and who just does generic, superficial ones. Also those who know what they are talking about. The device gets real warm and drains battery like an S4 with heavy use. All due to the Qhd and the 801 pushing to it. The chips comfort zone is 1080p and Qhd is it's ceiling.

That all said, If happy don't sweat the tech stuff :)

I've had my G3 for a week. Last night while trying to record a show on the riverwalk I received the warning about the phone overheating and it kept going thru a cooling down period.

On my third day with the G3. I'm trying to put it through its paces to see if I can make it stutter. Nothing yet.

Only time I saw the heat notification was when I cranked the brightness to 100% in an area of poor cellular reception. I did that on purpose, since every phone I've ever had heats up when the signal is poor. Surprisingly, it didn't heat up uncomfortably, the screen was still plenty bright, and performance didn't suffer.

One thing I noticed is that data roaming was turned off on mine out of the box. I turned it on since I have Sprint, and haven't seen it struggle for signal reception again. I was in Pittsfield, MA yesterday, almost no coverage, taking photospheres outside, creating tiny worlds, sharing them online...and the phone didn't break a sweat.

I know what LG did, and I know it can be an issue, but so far, it's had no impact on how I've wanted to use the G3.

I recorded a 4 min video and stopped before I started the next recording and after 13 seconds of the second recording I received an over heating warning and the recording stopped. That was pretty discouraging.

I got this message twice when taking videos.

I have yet to get the notice on mine. I switched from the S4 after reading through this thread and am very happy.

With the S4 I was unable to use it on my dashboard for navigating without it shutting down due to overheating. I have tested my G3 under the same circumstances without encountering the notice.

Not had this issue with my S4 with GPS. Gets very warm though if in weak signal areas while using GPS. The radios in the S3 and S4 kind of suck with weak signal.

The interesting thing is its not limited to one carrier it seems to be a QC issue regardless of carrier and should simply be a warranty swap. My suggestion would be to stress test the the G3 you get and see just how warm it does or does not get with aggressive use. Play a video for 30 minutes, play a graphics intensive game, anything that will put a push on the system. These are small computers, but they should still be able to handle what they are designed for. Worse case scenario we get a dud and we swap it out, best case scenario you get a great device without issue and you are happy.

The problem is that we don't know what is normal and what's not. Nobody gave a useful answer for that yet.

I consider it hot (130-145cpu) after medium usage (Tumblr + messenger + music + forum) and warm with light usage (120-130 cpu for example: reading this forum) but only the top half of the phone, battery feels kinda cool (90-95).

And with posts like "it's warm" or "it's not hot" I have no idea what to think because I can't find numbers.

I checked out and with heavy gaming and multiple apps - cpu gets between 145-160 degrees.
When it's idle it's around 95-105.

Can somebody confirm if it's normal or not? I really want to figure it out but nobody says anything about that on any forum - I feel like its impossible to get an answer. :( Maybe that's why everybody is swapping out their devices - even though it's maybe normal but the don't know it.

You're not the only one. My phone heats up really bad. When I record my device in HD my phone peaks around 80-85C, but when I set it in 4K recording it peaks at 94 Celsius. I'm not exaggerating, my phone gets HOT! Yours doesn't seem that bad comparing to mine. I plan on returning mine.

Wow! 80-90 Celsius? Mine is not that bad the max was around 70, could be worse though if I would have played more games I think.

What's with normal usage or gaming - how bad is it then? Its strange that it is 120-130 even if im just using the AC app - not sure if normal or not.

I'm trying to figure out too if should I worry or not.

I game a lot during work. Lol. I leave the games running since I switch back to it and work so frequently, my Optimus g can get pretty warm.

Has anyone gamed for 2-3 hrs straight on the G3 yet?

I can tell you that the g3 gets very warm and drains battery quick while playing Clash of Clans, but so did my galaxy note 3 and my iPhone 5s. Other than that I have not experienced any gaming issues.

Taking mine off the charger this morning without using it yet it's at 87° F. The hottest I have seen, while watching over an hour of YouTube videos, was 104ish° F. It usually hovers around 85-95°, sometimes 100° with normal use so far. This is based on looking at my temp logs with gsam.

Is this the cpu temperature? If it's the phone or battery I have the same but if it's cpu then something is really wrong with my and others device.

The average temp for daily usage idles around 65-71C, that's just for browsing through Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, and YouTube @100% brightness, but eventually it drops down to 85% brightness; I haven't tested out on games yet. I lowered it to 0% and it reads around 50C-55C. It only gets hot by the top of the phone, not by the battery, but it does drain a lot of battery life. I believe it's a defective one, so I've already returned it earlier today and have to wait for a new one. It looks like some people aren't having the same problem that I'm having, well not most people. Worst case-scenario is switching to HTC M8, because surprisingly my friend's benchmark (AnTuTu, 3DMark, Quadrant Standard) out performed my G3.

Can you let me know please about the new phone?

I have the same, only the top part of the phone is getting very-very warm as I wrote. Battery temp is normal. And never get any warning or anything besides of the 90% brightness so far.

I would like to know if it's normal or not.

That would have to be defective. My video cards within my gaming rig only hit 75 C under load... A phone getting that hot would be to hot to hold at 167 F.

Can I ask how exactly you're measuring this temperature?
