List of Epic Pros and Cons

more details...

My wife has an issue with her phone that is confusing the peeps at Sprint. Her icons do not stay on her desktop- they disappear. We spoke to tech support this am and he walked us through a factory reset and the issue continued to happen. The only diff between the two phones is that I sent her a photo that I took at the lake for her wallpaper. So, we went to Sprint this afternoon and they switched out phones. I loaded everything up (including the pic) and it started happening again!! Her phone has nothing that mine doesn't. Nothing in the forums and no one has heard of this issue. She will take her phone back or call and do a full reset, I have formatted the sd card and removed some beta programs (which are fine on my machine) Angry Birds and Swiftkey.

In my mind - the possibilities:

Logged her into android with xxxxx@gmail.com when it was originally created as googlemail.com - however when sending to each addy, both showed up on her phone.

Corrupt photo (that I took on my phone and emailed to her)?

The two beta programs?

All other settings are identical. She can still access programs from the app pages , just cant keep apps on her desktop.

Would it have something to do with the sequence I d/l apps and open them? Or setting up things like voicemail or other pre-installed items?

I never got to install her yahoo acct on the phone and it started again.

Puzzled? We sure are. Everytime she shuts off the phone, the icons go by by. Looking forward to figuring it out. :)

Freezing issue didn't go away after factory reset. Exchanged for a new device and all is running smoothly so far.

How long after your reset did this begin again? I just reset my phone this morning, & and so far (fingers corssed) i'm good. Note, I did not install all my apps once I reset the device. I'm installing them a few a day to see if there is a problem. I called Sprint to see if others are complaining of this and was asvised that no complants of freezing: most complaints come from battery life. I installed Advanced Task Killer & am testing it out now w/the battery life.

Trying to watch a video sent to my gmail app, no go. It won't allow me to download video. Do I need to dl a seperate app? Video sent from a bb.

That is unusual, when navigating on Google Map the screen will turn off as scheduled, but when using Google Navigation (the app with the blue arrow) the screen timeout is overridden by the app.

Have you updated the Google Maps app from market, there is an newer version than the one on ROM. If you have not updated yet, go ahead and update from the market, then reboot the phone and you will find two new apps, Places and Navigation; the latter is the one I am talking about here.
Thanks, I must have ben using Google Maps. You are right, Google Nav does not seem to shut off for me. I prefer the Google Maps view, but hey, that's not a big deal. Thanks.

anyone else experiencing this?

when you end a phone call the screen stays turned off and locked out for up to 20 seconds. I know that there is a sensor just like in my EVO that turns off the screen when its next to your ear, but on my evo it only takes 2-3 seconds to turn back on, with my wife's epic its much much longer.

Actually no. Mine turns back on quickly.

My only gripe is that it does not go back to the home screen automatically when I initiated the call like the Evo does. Just a minor difference in behavior but forces me to do an extra button press - guess I am way to spoiled!

Hey all, I'm new to android, this great site, and your awesome forums here. I switched from a Pre to the Epic on the day it launched and am having a few issues, the battery issue seemed to solve itself after a few charges, not sure why but it definitely seems to be lasting much longer than that first 2 days. My other isses are some wobble with the slider when it's closed and what I think is some screen seperation. Coming from a Pre and before that an Ocean and an Ocean 2 I'm pretty familiar with the problems of sliders and usually a 2 piece snap on shell helps, the small tabs that hold the cases in place usually fill the gap between the 2 sliding parts and make it feel more solid.

My question to you guys is do you think the top piece to one of those cases would help with any potential screen seperation? It seems as though if I push on the glass there's a tiny bit of give there and I was thinking the plastic piece that snaps around the perimeter on the screen would hold those edges down better. Any thoughts on that? I'd really rather not have to deal with returning it and potentially getting a worse one.

Let me say something positive first....I had the EVO for almost 30 days and the responsiveness and graphics capability are significantly better on the EPIC. This should improve even more with 2.2.

That being said there are definitely some quality issues. I am on my third EPIC.

The first EPIC had very loose slider. It also had very unresponsive capacitive buttons. There is definitely some variation between units on the capacitive buttons this isn't just varying preferences between users.

I picked up a second unit yesterday. Mechanically it was great. Rock solid. When I got home, I remembered that this device is actually supposed to be a phone. ;-) I placed a call and discovered I had defective speaker. It rattled and distorted at very low volumes.

I have my third unit. It has a solid slider at the extended position but there is some see-sawing when it is closed (rocking when pressing the screen at opposite ends). This is somewhat minor so it should be OK as long as it doesn't get worse. The downside of a real keyboard is that you can't guarantee that it will be rock solid over time.

GPS:
Across all three units the GPS is a little bit sluggish especially compared to the EVO. I also noticed that on all units the system would never report accuracy better than 30m. This appears to be a bug because using google maps it appeared to be able to eventually resolve my position on the map within 10 feet or so.

S/W:
There are some Wifi bugs and 4G can be flakey when it is going in and out. These items should easily get worked out along with GPS in an update...I hope.
I have the gap between the screen and keyboard as well that makes pushing the menu button a little "mushy" or see-saws

When I try to upload a picture to facebook or send a picture via mms, the orientation won't follow if I took the picture with the phone in portrait. Which is weird, because the pictures are the correct orientation in the gallery app.

I just downloaded Launcher Pro. It allows the home screen to rotate and overall it's a much better launcher than the native one.
I don't think my private message went through (as I'm a new user)

Has anyone installed launcher pro, and had issue with the contacts button on the dock shortcuts? I hit mine and it says "could not launch the requested activity" Just curious if anyone had a similar issue.

Also, did you download "Home Switcher"? when I go to the download section of market and click launcher pro, "open" isn't enabled and I thought it was a bit strange.

Not sure if this was already posted or not but figured i would put it in this thread. Today i plugged my phone into the car charger for the first time. I made a phone call and after a few seconds the screen went blank. I could not end the call and had to wait for the other party to hang up. I tried rebooting the phone and still, every time i made a call while it was on the car charger, the screen would go blank and not give me any options to use the phone until the other party hung up. Anyone else experience this?

It began freezing almost immediately after the reset. I think I plugged in the USB cable or hit the power button and it locked. The good news is that the replacement has been flawless. I've actually tried to abuse it enough to test it and not a single hiccup.

I've noticed when the phone first turned on at the shack, I had a working LED, soon as I take it home and ever since then the notification led does not work even with the setting for the notification led. Has anyone had this annoying problem. I dont know if I had received any messages/calls/VM..etc without turning on my phone.

Don't have the instruction manual with me but if memory serves you can use the power button or volume rocker to turn the screen back on.

Mine in last few days lost connection with the SD card. This cause all my music disappear from my current play list.

Watching/play video

I cant download/watch/play video sent thru my gmail acct. What am I doing wrong?

Good to know a replacement is on the way. It seems like a defective one. I am reading these threads daily, and trying to abuse my unit as well, to see if I have similar problems. But, as stated, so far, my unit is pretty good.

i've had my samsung epic for a week now and i basically like the phone but have 2 rather major issues...1st i cannot use any of the voice comand features from my bluetooth and there doesn't seem to be any good apps that acutally work out there to fix this and 2nd when my bluetooth headset is connected and i'm listening to the music player through the headphone jack connected into my car stero through the aux input...all works well till i get a call.. then the call audio goes through my car speakes my bluetooth must turn off because i cannot use it to talk and the phone speaker phone doesn't work. in fact i cannot get the phone mic to work at all if the headphone aux jack is plugged in.... i have to unplug the headphone jack before i answer every phone call...really annoying! any ideas?
