List of Epic Pros and Cons

Androidone, thanks for the reply. Not to familiar with posting on forums and did not know how to include your reply.Anyway, i tried the power button yesterday and it did not reset the screen. I rebooted phone and then when i made a call again from the car charger and the screen went blank, the power button did work to bring it back. Thanks again.

First, I LOVE THIS PHONE! I just brought my PC up for the 1st time since getting it, because I had to print something out - and couldn't remember my saved password for this forum.

1. Here's one I haven't seen here, yet: Even though I keep my "System Volume" down to nothing, at least once a day it will return to full volume. I really don't enjoy the "popping" sound every time I press a key.

2. My buttons work well, screen is secure.

3. Downloaded what I assume is Google Nav. Works perfectly except for one glitch - if the GPS isn't turned on before launching and I do it when prompted, it just keeps searching. If I close and reopen it's fine.

4. Though I have set my email to update every hour. It does so only occasionally. It usually waits for me to open the app. It seems to notify me when the next email arrives, then quits updating until I open the app. again.

5. Calendar was very disappointing after Palm 800W. Downloaded Beta Touch Calendar and am happy to have a better view. Does anyone know an app that will give me a tone before every appt. like my Palm did? It required me to dismiss an appt. - which automatically created a "to-do" list. I miss that.

6. Love the Swype, but have to be careful to proof-read before sending!

7. The power button placement is annoying due to my long nails, but I'm adjusting.

8. Using Lookout to scan new applications.

No problem, to reference another post on your reply just press the
button, to reference several posts, press on the ["] button and then
button on your final post to be referenced.

Let me clarify your situation - I am trying to complile a list of issues so to send Samsung an official communication so they are aware of these and can fix them in future firmware updates.

If I understood you correctly it only happens if you are plugged in on the car charger. Question, were you using bluetooth, did you have anything connected to the 3.5mm audio port, can you replicate this behavior with the wall charger or when not connected to the charger at all.

Please do some testing and let me know. Thanks.

Facebook issue

The facebook app works great except I get an error when I click on the notifications tab it says "Cannot retrieve the notifications. Please try again later. [601/Parser error:unexpected '-'at position 64.]

anyone know what that means? would be nice to get the notifications to work.

I know I'm committing the cardinal sin of not reading all the posts before asking but I wanted to get the thought down quick before I forgot it... does any one else have an issue with some settings going back to default after a Power Down cycle? For example, the clicking sound that you get when you touch the screen (it's under System Volume I think in Settings under the sound and display); I like the sound but have it turned down to it's lowest audible setting because I think it's too loud, but when I put the phone through a power on / off cycle, it resets to it's loudest setting... anyone else have this issue?

My first Epic rocked a bad std phone mic (speaker phone worked great). The slider mech on the first phone was not as good as the slider on the second phone. I think it comes down to manufacturing tolerences. Neither is as solid as a Droid 2 I had for a week.

Issues -
-life is 10% per hour of normal use. battery charges slower than most phones. I don't mind the limited battery life, I do mind the slow recharge though. This thing needs a hot swapable battery!
-sprint 3g data connectivity drops on occasion. 4g rocks the haus.

loves
-4g data service is amazing.
-screen - I'll toss my LCD tv any day for an AMOLED.
-call quality. better than any other smart phone. I tried 4 before I ended up with the Epic
-Keyboard. It has it's faults, but it's better than the droid 2
-Touchwiz 2.5 is better than 3.0.

Did you already reinstall Facebook from the market? It's updated, and will override the stock app. This seemed to have fixed those errors.

You can turn the click off in setting and Calendroid plays notification on up coming appointments task etc. And also give bi-weekly option

Hi,

Been lurking the forums for awhile, my first post. First lemme say I LOVE MY EPIC!! I came from a Nokia E71, and before that several Palms. I totally love Android and all it offers.

Overall my phone has been working well. Since this is an issues thread, I'll just state what hasn't been working. One note - some people were complaining about the widgets or other apps. I don't consider those issues because if I don't like the stock apps, I just go find a different one. Which I did for the calendar, feeds, weather, sms, and tasks. The main reason I switched to Android was because of the apps. After a few days of trying lots of apps, I'm very happy with the way my phone is set up now.

Ok, so my issues --

1) Sprint told me to do the "update profile" thing to get my old number registered on my phone. After I did that, the power button stopped working to sleep my screen. This was a big deal for me because even the 15 second timeout isn't quick enough when you need to put the phone in your pocket right away. I read other forum posts that said after they did an update, they also lost the power button sleep functionality. Some people said a reset fixed it, but theres no way I wanted to do that and lose all my apps. So I found a better solution. I installed the "Spare Parts" app, which has a setting for the END button behavior. When I set that to sleep, it fixed my power button!! (Note: The app says that option only works in 1.5, but it fixed this issue perfectly!)

2) Battery charging time. This phone takes forever to charge. My Nokia was fully charged in under 2 hours. This takes about 6-8. What I am doing now is leaving it plugged in at work all day. So then it never gets down too low and I am fine once i leave the office.

3) Battery life. I have to charge this phone every day. But that is worth it to me to have this gorgeous screen. I'm also on the phone A LOT during the day. I don't talk that much but I imagine if you were talking on it all day that would drain it even more. It does last the day for me, though, mainly reading email, using the calendar, downloading apps, etc.

4) Wifi doesn't work for downloading apps. How can I tell if the phone is using wifi or the 3G connection? When I'm in the office I"m connected to wifi, but things do not download very quickly, or sometimes not at all. If wifi is on, is the phone supposed to only use that for data? What happens often is that I pick an app to download, and I don't actually get it until I go outside and it comes down over 3G. WTF?

5) Not impressed with 4G. I am in Chicago where 4G is supposed to be all over. I have only gotten it a few times. Most of the time the signal is too weak and it switches back to 3G. Also pisses me off that I have to pay for this that I can't even use. (Feel worse for people in areas without 4G at all!)

6) LED notifications. Isn't the LED supposed to light up if I have messages? This isn't working for me.

Overall I love this phone. I was so excited they finally came out with one of these "super" phones with a good keyboard! And I can say I have not been disappointed, it is a super phone.

I don't think my private message went through (as I'm a new user)

Has anyone installed launcher pro, and had issue with the contacts button on the dock shortcuts? I hit mine and it says "could not launch the requested activity" Just curious if anyone had a similar issue.

Also, did you download "Home Switcher"? when I go to the download section of market and click launcher pro, "open" isn't enabled and I thought it was a bit strange.

yes, and I deleted it for that very reason plus the icons didnt look very good. Not really sure of the benefits of LP although many are raving about it...

anyone know how to get g talk from always showing up in the running services?!? i am constantly having to go there and STOP it when I am NOT even signing in and have the box in my settings for "auto sign in" unchecked.

You know I had your problem as well (#4 I mean) but I found out the issue wasn't the wifi. At least not directly. The issue, as much as I hate to say it, was Google. Google apps seem to have the most difficult time staying signed in while running on Wifi. Which is kinda dumb seeing as more often than not its the fastest connection available. To fix this, I would go in to the Gtalk App and sign out, then back in, and all my Market downloads would commence no problem. Hopefully, this issue is fixed in 2.2

Like most of you, I am nearing the end of my second week with the Epic. So far, I only have only seen a few issues. Most have been noted and I am grateful for everyone confirming my suspicions.

1. Capacitive buttons - I have to tap the buttons over and over and over and over before they respond. Especially the back button. I will certainly take the phone in to have it replaced once the demand dies down.

2. If I open or close the keyboard with any app that utilizes the camera - after starting the camera app, the software glitches up or crashes completely. Sometimes the screen goes blank and I can't get the app back up unless I close it down with ATK.

3. Battery life is fair considering the screen size and features. It doesn't do as well as my daughter's EVO, but I am able to make it through the day. I do have a charger in my car and at work though.

4. Battery charging time does seem slow. I have also wondered if the charging indicator is more honest than what you find in other phones. It is possible that the long charging time is not a glitch it may just be thorough.

Overall I love the phone. I am still adapting to Android with it's bountiful options. I am coming from a Pre and over 10 years as a Palm user. I haven't looked back.

Anyone else having problems with audio not recording when you use the camcorder? For me it is not recording audio so there's no sound on the videos that I record. I even copied them and played them on my PC and there is still no sound.

There's a toggle in the settings menu in the camcorder to record audio - tried both "checked" and "unchecked" to no avail. Can't imagine that it's a hardware issue, my microphone seems to work fine for both regular and speakerphone calls.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Think I have this one figured out but would still like to know if other Epics are acting the same way...

So for me, if I am recording a video, it will not begin recording audio also UNTIL a loud noise is picked up by the microphone. From that point on, the mic is turned on.

To test, I just recorded my dog playing. He didn't bark but was making some noise. I recorded him for about 20 seconds and then I snapped my fingers right next to the microphone on the phone. Then continued recording the dog for another 20 seconds or so.

Sure enough, there is no audio in the video UNTIL the point where I snapped my fingers. I don't know if this was a way to save battery power or what, but it's annoying. The mic shouldn't have to be "activated" by a sound, it should just start recording when the video starts recording, just like every other camcorder that's existed since ohhhhhh 1982 or so!

Issues I've been having

I switched over to the Samsung Epic from the G1.

First off I love the speed of the Epic and the little things like choosing to go to an incoming text via the lock screen and I love the long-hover to uninstall feature the trash can adds, etc.

However, here are the minor complaints I have:
- I don't like the charger port placement
- GPS is usable but could be better
- Capacitive buttons backlight times out on occasion despite my best efforts to keep it on
- It is difficult to place the cursor between letter near the edge of the screen
- Browser most sites as zoomed as possible with no option to change the default view that works
- When selecting text to edit off screen the view snaps back to where the cursor just was

The more major complaints are as follows:
- Physical keyboard lags sometimes when typing
- Keyboard arrangment is terrible, keys are too close and too flat, very difficult to use as a gamepad for many games and no tab key (wish it was more like a computer keyboard, symbol location too)
- The battery indicator shows more power than I actually have
- The charging cable comes out too easily
- Every once in a great while the screen and all button with become unresponsive (once I accidentally called my boss at night and could not stop or end the call, had to remove battery) or the phone will freeze and restart (rare)
- Battery charging is way too slow and does not reach 100%, plus the "fully charged" notification every night is very annoying
- No day of week shown in notification bar or on default day selector on any app that uses it (like AK Notepad)
- The system volume option only holds until restarting the phone
- The manual screen brightness setting will not stay all the way down (opening and closing the notification bar a few times will cause it to reset to a higher brightness)

If anyone has any solutions to some of these I would appreciate it.

Gtalk is actually not the same thing as the Google Talk (chat) app. Gtalk is a background service for Android that pushes apps to your phone that you've requested from the Market. I think it does other things too, but I'm certain it at least does that much.
