Note 5 vs Note 4 discussion

If they had been released at the same time, would you get a Note 4 or Note 5?

Everything you mentioned I have on GNote4 already except slimmer display and new processor. I have wireless charging. Phone still works like an champ no lag at all. If I purchase it now it would be because I just like having the latest phone not because I can really use it like I use my Note 4. I use the pen a lot to get signatures. The GNote5 is a great phone but just not for my needs for work and entertainment with No MicroSD slot.

Hey i wont argue with ya lol.. i loved my note4 and it never lagged for me. My point to that was to not simply discount the 5 for the 4 based on those two things alone.

My daughter wanted my note4 so i gave it to her, my other phone of choice is the droids by motorola, which havent had an sdcard slot or removable back in years and i am ok with.

I cant see buying last years phone, as much as i love the note 4, and if i am going to spend the money i might as well get the latest software too. But thats just me.

I dont keep a lot on my phones, maybe 30 songs and some pics, but i keep my pics backed up to my laptop just in case.

Me too i dont have any songs on my Note 4, i backup every few weeks the photos in my laptop. The only lag i see on Note 4 is the Gallery app when i have a lot of photos and the messaging app but i use Textra now so thats not a problem..

The only reason i want to get the Note 5 is just to have the latest phone and get many accessories so i can make reviews for them and publish them in my website... but still i am going to lose a perfect phone (note 4 ;( )

I have an AT&T Note 4 and I just got a preordered Note 5 on Monday 8/17. I posted a longer post in this forum with my benchmarks, so you can check them there. But, I will provide my subjective opinions and thoughts here.

- In day to day use, I feel the N5 is noticeable fasterr and smoother, and less laggy. I have both devices encrypted, along with the SD card in the N4. So that may make a difference, since the N5 is faster and has faster storage.
- App installs from the Play Store are far faster on the N5.
- N5 finger print sensor is much better and faster. I think it is faster than the iPhone 6 I have.
- I have a 128 GB micro SD card in my N4 and I do not like some of the quirks with the File manager apps and the SD card. Like you have to use the Samsung app to do some copy/paste and folder edits on the SD card. When you use the Photos and Videos sections in the Samsung Files app, it aggregates the internal and SD card storage. so, if you have backups on the SD card of what is in internal storage, you see duplicates.
- The narrower profile of the N5 is evn more noticeable when the N5 and N4 are both in the S-View Flip cases.
- I have a few false touches on the N5 due to the narrow bezels, that I never noticed on the N4.
- With like settings in my Nova Launcher, the N5 renders text and icons smaller than the N4.
- The camera bump on the back of the N5 is smaller than the N4. But I use S-View Flip cases on each, so that is a mut feature.

A bit OT, but on my Galaxy S4, if I use encryption, I can't select a PIN code to unlock the phone (has to be a password). Which is a complete PITA. I figured out how to work around and get a numeric password, but I still have to hunt for the numbers on the on-screen keyboard (instead of the large on-screen PIN pad you get when you're locked with a true PIN). As I'm considering the Note 5, does it now allow you to use an actual numeric PIN to unlock while encrypted?

Thanks!

Let me rephrase.

IR blasters not being included in new devices for a reason.

As long as you have it in your current device, it's not dead.

What reason?

So, I received my Note 5 yesterday. I have the Note 4 also. While it's too early to any conclusions, so far i really love the Note 5. Some observations for those of you that have the Note 4:

- The display is better on the Note 5 than on my Note 4. It is not major, but it is noticeable when they are side-to-side on some screens. Brighter by a tiny bit, and a slightly more blue-ish (as opposed to a yellowish) white, which I prefer. Awesome screen.

- The screen is denser. You can fit 5 x 5 icons from the stock TouchWiz on your home screens. This is great. Everything is a bit smaller though, so it takes a bit of getting used to. Also, you can adjust font sizes in the settings. The result of the denser display is the ability to see more of everything - 1 more line of Gmail or Hangouts, etc, etc. It's good.

- Edit: The MOVED ..the hidden "menu" button .. Until now, if you held down the multi-task button , it would act as the old menu button. I actually use a few old apps that haven't been updated in a while (for very small specific needs) that didn't have the overflow button. On the Note 5, you hold down the BACK button for the menu button.

- The Camera seems fantastic. Really really great. The double tap to get the camera open is such an improvement for trying to get a quick shot. It really changes how quickly you can use the camera. A few quick test shots (at night and in the day) were excellent. the shot-to-shot speed is great with almost no lag getting from the camera to the gallery too (which I know all of you Note 4 users realize is good to hear). The FFC is improved also. I rarely use it, but I guess it was upgraded from 2MP to 5MP, and it is definitely an improvement - I mean even those front camera shots look pretty great I have to say. Lastly, tried the YouTube live streaming with my family and it works great. It will be perfect for when I am at my son's little league games if I want to broadcast his at bat to my parents or my wife an other kids from the game - and for many other things. It's dead easy to do a private stream ( or public I suppose)

- It's very speedy all around. My Note 4 is pretty fast too, and the Note 5 is new, but it definitely seems quicker in every aspect.

- The Fingerprint scanner works perfectly. I never really used it on the Note 4. I tried it early on and it was slow, janky, and somewhat unreliable. On the Note 5 it is accurate - it hasn't missed yet actually. And, it is SO fast. I now use it for my lock security, it is so good.

- The Note 5 phone is noticeably smaller in hand compared to my Note 4. It is more slippery though with the glass back. It feels great, it looks great. It feels premium. Several ooohs and ahhhhs from friends today :-).

- The auto-brightness seems to be set at a slightly dimmer level during low light times. It is super bright when needed when there is light. But for my taste, it makes the screen just a tiny bit too dim in low light situations. It's not bad at all, but it's set a bit lower than on my Note 4. This is quite subjective of course, but I thought the Note 4 got auto-brightness perfect for me.

- S Pen screen writing with the device screen off works as expected, and it's great and fast. Good addition. The other s Pen software seems improved as well (it at least looks better to me).

- There are no issues with Bluetooth or Wifi. GPS seems excellent. All are great on my Note 4 too.

- The battery seems really good. I'm not going to give numbers after 1 day, but I have been on it non-stop since yesterday and I am pleased with the battery. It is better - at this early stage - than my Note 4's battery. Too early to tell though here of course, so don't read too much into it.

- Lastly, for anyone on Verizon (mine is on Verizon).... Verizon apparently cannot provision Advanced Calling 1.0 just yet for the Note 5 (not sure if it's because it isn't yet the 8/21 launch date , or what ..). There is a setting in the phone to enable it, but it isn't working just yet. I spent some time on the phone with some techs who have a ticket in so that they can add it for Note 5's. I expect it can be added shortly, but until then, no VOLTE, or HD calling.

- p.s. For the first time on a phone I have seen in years, Google+ was NOT pre-loaded with all the other Google apps on my Verizon Note 5. I had to download it from the Play Store. More signs of just how far G+ has fallen I suppose. Maybe this has been the case for a bit now and I have no new devices in the last year or so, but it felt odd not to see it there..

So how many people buying the N5 will be using it without a case? If so, I can understand that looks matter. But with that glass back drops could be unfortunate. If you will use a case, how will that impact how it looks?
I've already ordered my case. Its the GoBsllistic Jewel Case. Its mostly clear, so I will still be able to enjoy the look of my Note V!

The way things stand now I'd take the Note 4( recent buyer of a Note 4).
Now if something really big happened with only 64 bit Android, then I'd go for the Note 5.

Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum and, even, the android community as a whole.
I've been an iphone user for almost 4 years and want to jump on the Andriod ship after trying out my friends' phones.
(Also, recently got a Surface to replace my old macbook, so my attachment to Apple ended there)

Currently :) the Note 5 just came out and haven't tried it yet but I like how it looks.
However, I'm familiar with the mobile market that the previous year's model will go down significantly in price after the release of a new model.
Which means the Note 4 is going to be cheaper to buy. :D Awesome because I'm a student with limited funds.

I would really like a phone that can last me ~2 years without it becoming outdated rather soon, though.

Do you think I should get the Note 4? or the Note 5?
Can you give me ideas to why one is better than the other? :)

Much appreciated! :D

Re: Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

For me it's simple. NOTE 4. Removable battery and expandable storage. Enough said. For me batteries take a dump after 8 months or so....why not have a phone that you can replace the battery. Don't get me wrong the note 5 looks great...but you'll spend an arm and a leg to get it. Just my two cents.

Re: Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

If you want an SD card or easily replaceable battery get a note 4. If not and you don't mind spending the extra $, the note 5 trumps it in all other ways.

Re: Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

There's a gigantic discussion of it just moved to another forum here. Should keep you busy reading for an hour :-)

BTW I have had the Note 4 and now received the Note 5. Definitely the Note 5, all the way (after almost 2 day's user now) . If you must have a removable battery or SD card, then the Note 4 of course. Again, if that were the case then there would be no need for the question :-)

- Better cameras and camera quick launch. What a difference in camera launch mechanics and great results from both cameras so far.
- UFS 2.0 storage - the Note 5 is FAST now.
- Better fingerprint scanner - works great now.
- Better S Pen with ability to write with screen off
- WAY better design and looks, by a mile.
- More RAM
- FAST wireless charging capability
- the cool YouTube upload thing - It works great.

Re: Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

Forgetting the IR blaster though. I traded my S6 in on a note 4 because the S6 had horrid battery life, terrible audio and lags. THe Note 4 is much nicer with the larger screen and battery is WAY better.

The one thing about the Note 5 minus no SD or removable battery is the IR blaster is missing which is dumb. If I wanted a Note 5 I'd look into a Iphone 6s Plus. Just note impressed with Samsung the last year and a half now. The Note 4 is the last decent device they made.

The note 5 is proving to be a much better device than the S6. No lag and much better battery.

And why would you go iPhone? Do you prefer ios?

Re: Undecided... Note 5 or Note 4?

I purchased the Note 5 over the Note 4 because it's the new model that's future-proof with its 4GB of RAM and octo-core processing. The Note 4, to me, is outdated.

What's important for you in a phone?

The 4gb hasn't made any difference, apps are still refreshing.
