On the GS6. What's more of a deal breaker for you, no removable battery or no SD card?

battery wears out, its just the way it is, it will lose 10-25% in a year, and holds half after 2 years. S6 has no way to fix it, while s5 does.
You're correct about the battery wearing out but for the vast majority of consumers that is not an issue as they'll be replacing the phone after two years, if not sooner, anyways.

Re: So... S6 alternatives with SD card support?

You wife has way too much stuff on one storage card. Many options available - just whatever suits her best.

Re: Does anything worry you about the Galaxy S6?

As someone mentioned above, I'm looking at this as a harbinger of things to come with the Note 5. I can deal with the lack of an SD card, which I now use almost entirely for music. With the advent of larger internal memory on the Note 4 -- and KitKat throwing a log jam into the manipulation of files on the SD card -- I store pics and videos in internal memory to allow for easy manipulation (generally, deletion). And because all of my music is stored in Google Music, I usually use the Play Music app more often than not, making the SD card storage of music redundant.

But what I can see having a difficult time with, though not all of the time, is the lack of a replaceable battery. In my normal routine, I don't need a replaceable battery because I'm always near or about to be near a power source (home, car, or office). But as a general matter, when I'm traveling, say, on vacation, taking the kids to Disney, what have you, I'm often out and about all day. At those times, I always take an extra battery, which I invariably end up popping in at 5 in the afternoon or so. It's pretty clear to me that if I get a newer phone, I'm either just going to have to let the battery die in such instances, or I'll have to carry the adaptive fast charger with me and take 10 minutes or so out to to top off when I find an available outlet.

Also, I'll no longer be able to loudly proclaim "Can't do this with an iPhone!" when I replace the battery. :p

G3 ????????????

I guess we will have to see how many people cares.

And today's batteries are rated for up-teen thousands of charges. I wouldn't worry too much about the battery - with other manufacturers going with non-removable batteries the process has come a long way in terms of durability.

The SD card. However if the 128GB version is available from all major carriers in the UK then there won't be a problem. Then the battery will be the biggest upset for me.

Lack of expandable storage.

Yes, I have Google Drive, but there are times where you don't have an internet connection and when your phone is full and you can't delete anything off (if you feel they're important). That's why I find expandable storage valuable.

The fact that the S6 lacks that is a deal-breaker for me. I'm hoping to see it in the upcoming LG G4.

The fact that the battery is fixed doesn't concern me that much. The fact that it's paired with a power-hungry 1440p screen does.

Re: So... S6 alternatives with SD card support?

The Galaxy Note 4 or the Galaxy S5

The LG G3 or the upcoming G4

The HTC One M8 or the M9

Re: Does anything worry you about the Galaxy S6?

Battery life. The fact that they paired a smaller battery with a 1440p screen deeply worries me, and I doubt that even a 14nm chip can save more power than that screen chews through.

Oh, and storage. Apparently, in Europe, they're charging 100 euros extra to jump to 64GB and another 100 euros extra for 128GB.

But the Iphone 6 is just now on par with the S3. :)

Re: Does anything worry you about the Galaxy S6?

The non removable battery worries me. In the past it didn't matter how good or bad the battery was because you could always carry a charged spare around with you. Granted with the S5 and the note 3 I rarely used the spare. However battery life isn't always consistent on android. Some days you get rogue battery days and now they can't be mitigated.

Re: Does anything worry you about the Galaxy S6?

I'm not too concerned about the battery, If I'm driving and I need a charge I just plug it into the car charger, at home & work there's always power. If I'm out for the day I just might top it off in the car as I'm on my way. I really don't see a big deal for my lifestyle anyway, I rarely run out of power by the end of the day. It seems like the members here use the phone way more than I do and utilize the max capacity and I understand the concerns. As we become more and more dependent on the phones and load them up with "life stuff" it requires more storage and processing power...I guess I'm not one of those type of users.

SD is a little more troublesome for me but I haven't used all the space with my GS3 and a 16 card so no biggie here either. the S6 is still the top choice for me but I'll wait for the G4 to make a decision. It'll have to be a big deal though, I'm not keen on bigger phones and the S6 is plenty big for me, it'll take something good to get me over to a larger G4 but I'm going to wait it out.

The Galaxy S6: Has Samsung gone nuts?!

The Galaxy S6 shows a dramatic departure for Samsung devices. Out goes plastic, in goes metal and glass. Out goes a removable battery, in goes a fixed one. Out goes a microSD card slot, in goes......nothing. Just more internal flash storage + SSD hybrid.

Now, I'm a sucker for premium builds and I genuinely think the S6 is a nice looking device (although I still heavily question the design resemblance to the iPhone 6, especially the sides) but I think Samsung ditched quite a lot of what made the S5 a great smartphone.

Some things that are very questionable to me are;
  • Having a fixed battery instead of a removable one, which is a concern when the battery may wear out faster due to quick charging and when you desperately need a charge but can't do a battery swap.
  • Making said battery smaller and pairing it with a power-hungry 1440p screen. I'm not so sure that the 14nm Exynos chip will save more power than that screen chews through.
  • Omitting the microSD card slot and apparently (in Europe) charging 100 euros extra for 64GB and another 100 euros extra for 128GB.
  • No more IP water-resistance and dust-proofing.

Now, I still think that Samsung made a nice phone, but I think they made quite a lot of compromises to make it. A microSD card slot on the side would be nice. HTC has done it on the M8 and M9, so it isn't that hard, right?

Your thoughts? And yes, I'm prepared for the incoming shower of torches and pitchforks from Samsung fans.

Re: S6 is the reason I'm ditching Samsung, after owning Fascinate/S2/Droid Charge/S3/Note 2/Note 3/S

The backlash begins.

Samsung can't win. If they had kept the same plastic design they would have been crucified. At least they are offering 128GB of internal storage.

I was a person who didn't have a problem with the plastic back. I prefer function over form. However I understand why Samsung had to make the change.

Well, since you use an Iphone, charging should be a norm for you. :D

Sorry, I looked at your signature and saw the Iphone.....

The 6 plus, in comparison to the 6 has excellent battery life. I only need to charge my phone every other day.

If the battery life is the same as the S5 it won't be a problem as the S5 has pretty good battery life.

I haven't had a phone with a removable battery and SD card in over two years (currently have a 2014 moto x). I was concerned at first but honestly it is not a big deal. If I know I will be out late, I try to make sure I get on a charger for half an hour. Also have an external battery charger for times when I'm not near an outlet. Most phones are going this way, reminds me a bit of the physical keyboards a couple of years ago.

Since they made fun of the iPhone with the galaxy s5 commercial, showing that removable batteries rock, and now they come up with this, an iPhone clone, I'm with you, I have a note 4 at the moment, hoping they don't follow the same rule for the next note since right now I'm in love with this phone

Re: The Galaxy S6: Has Samsung gone nuts?!

No pitchforks & torches. The concerns are valid, I'm just not sure how much the average user cares to be honest. 6 months ago people were torching the MotoX for only having 32 gigs and now Sammy options up to 128 and people are still griping. I haven't tracked it but I think the MotoX did pretty well.

Battery is a personal thing, I'm not a brutal user of the phone so it's of no concern to me. My feelings are that the iPhone has sold tons without an SD or replaceable battery and nobody seems to care.

The glass back...meh...Mine will be in a light case which is good enough, I've never broken a screen and I work construction and I'm NOT NICE to my phones, they look like they went through a war. If I used the phone without the case I'd be more concerned. However I do appreciate the shrinking in size in all dimensions. These phones are plenty big and and size reduction is a good thing IMO.
