Phone keeps going to 3G

I have a S7 on t-mobile and lately I've noticed it keeps going to 3G from 4G, especially when I'm on a call. Also, sometimes I lose all signal and phone calls take at least 20 seconds to connect.
Is this a new uncarrier feature we don't know of about?
Location wise, I'm in metro NYC, with plenty of signal strength (when its working). Anyone else has these issues? Thanks!
 
Sounds like they're having VoLTE issues. Do you have that enabled?
 
Much of TMO's highly-touted "extended network" is LTE on Band 12, which uses VoLTE. So if you have VoLTE turned off, your phone will drop back to 3G, or, if that's not available, to either roaming or nothing at all.

I wonder what you mean by TMO's VoLTE is not reliable?

I didn't mean their VoLTE is not reliable, I meant their whole network. Call quality is so poor when on VoLTE, I had to switch it off

Weird. I use VoLTE 100% of the time in my area and it works / sounds just fine and I talk a lot on the phone. Around 1,200-1,500 mins a month usually.

I don't use VoLTE, because my phone does not support it (thanks, Lenovorola and TMO!), but, generally speaking: I find TMO's call acquisition, quality and retention just fine. I occasionally, as in perhaps one out of thirty calls or so, get a call with really horrible call quality. Disconnect, call back, solved.
