[Please Read 1st Post] ED01 - Samsung releases Froyo source code!

So..............

Does this source code mean...........cyanogenmod6-7!?
Can anyone help with this question?

My thinking is best not to download the file and look around for curiosity sake. The more people who do that, the slower the download will be when the devs are trying to download it. Let them get it as soon as possible, then in a few days you can get curious and look around in the file.

Ha I wouldnt know where to begin in there. Just wanted to know of its contents. I will not be touching it, I will let the great developers do there thing!! and then they said let there be better battery life for all!!!!!!!

Not sure. I've been reading the CM6 thread over at XDA. I think this source code may help, but to what extent I'm not sure. Besides, we just got Froyo source code released, can't we be happy with that and enjoy it instead of already looking for when we can get gingerbread?

Yaya your right, I used to have a htc cdma hero and had CM6 on it and loved it. just being 'wanty' ha ha hopefully we get a nice SC rom. battery life is ok on 2.9.2. no rush though just saying :)

While I don't really understand the programming aspect of phones. What does this mean for us that are just waiting for an official release?

Sorry, just need to interject a little here to hopefully be a peaceful mediator. From what I read, pizzadude wasn't complaining about people complaining about not having froyo yet. There was a small group of people who kept posting that Froyo was NEVER going to be released, not complaining about the fact it had not been released. I myself had no problem with people expressing and discussing their frustration over the delay in the release. But the doomsdayers who were saying Froyo was never going to be released were being completely irrational and unproductive. Just my view on and interpretation of what pizzadude said.

Exactly this. Sorry didnt mean to take this away from the spirit of the OP, which I am excited about for a lot of reasons. It was that small group that was getting tiresome.

Hey, even with the SC build I was frustrated with not getting an official Froyo because that lead me to think about VZW "abandoning" the phone sooner than I had hoped to replace this one. Getting Froyo now gives me the hope that I can extend this on out until they get 4G in my area.

It means the official release will actually be, as verizon has said all along "soon." But this is an actual soon, not we're just giving you the form answer soon. I would say withing a week, maybe more we will hopefully see an official release.

it means, IMHO, that it is pretty darn close to coming OTA. Not saying today or next week, but close

What it really means is Samsung is done. They've handed all blame and finger pointing over to VZW. So if the OTA doesn't come...you KNOW where to funnel your anger.

Luckily Samsung posts updates on their website, so even if Verizon decides not to release it you can probably still grab it from Samsung.

OK, so I've downloaded a zip file from the Samsung website. It contains three files, all with a .gz file extension:

3d_module_GPL.tar.gz
SCH-500_OpenSource_kernel.tar.gz
SCH-500_OpenSource_platform.tar.gz

I have no idea what to do with these things.

Unless you plan on compiling a kernel for customization, those files are of no use.

You don't do anything with them. You can't do anything with them unless you are a developer and know what to do with code. Everyone like you who downloads it, clogs up the system and makes the downloads for the developers take even longer. Which means an even longer wait until the developers can begin to work on the code and do anything with it. Please, please, please, anyone who reads this pay attention to what I said. The links are for original source code. If you don't know what you are doing with code and are not a developer, don't try to download it. Let the developers download it and do what they can with it.

Samsung cannot release the code if Verizon hasn't approved it. The fact that it has been posted, and hasn't been immediately removed, indicates that Verizon has finally approved ED01 as an official release.

Sweet! Just need the SC version and we are good. I bet ec01 is ed01

Also, we must remember, GB is not a HUGE jump like Eclair to Froyo. I can live with Froyo for a little while. When is VZW going to release the Nexus S?

When is VZW going to allow a stock AOSP handset to be on their network?

FTFY

Answer: Not bloody likely

* also agree about GB - I think Froyo was worth hubub and effort, but GB is just some spit and polish that the ROM devs and 3rd party apps can give us (have given us). I mean the copy/paste stuff is cool, but the only bit that I would want is the improved power management.

I agree with this, but tbh, we don't have that many devs... and I'm sure they all have it by now.

So some of the guys on xad are saying they don't see anything big or different then the ec10 code they had so that being said guess its not as great as everyone was hoping for.
