S6 Edge - Screen rotation does not work properly

So I just wanted to report back after getting my third 64GB S6 Edge from Verizon. There are a lot of tinfoil hat theories going around about this accelerometer defect so I'm going to try to debunk them and make an educated guess as to what the root of the problem is based on my experiences.

My first phone worked for a few days without any issues. However, it was noticeably hot at times especially when using the fast charger. I noticed one day that my auto-rotation function didn't work so I did some research online to try to find a fix. Others reported that their accelerometer's x-coordinate was stuck, so I checked mine and I had the exact same problem. I performed a factory reset, but the accelerometer was still stuck from the start. I went to my local Verizon store and had the phone replaced.

I was a little more attentive with my second phone and checked my accelerometer to see if I could pinpoint a potential trigger. I restored my phone, transferred all my information, and installed all my apps. No problems but again, the phone was noticeably hot. I got home and plugged in the fast charger for the first time and when I checked the accelerometer an hour later, it was stuck. Tried safe mode and factory reset... still stuck. I went back to the Verizon store to try one more time before I switched to the regular S6.

It's now been 9 days since I got my third S6 Edge and I've had no problems so far. The way I transferred contacts, messages, restored by backup, installed my apps, was the same. My third phone has been a lot cooler in general. I've used the fast charger multiple times and stress tested the phone by loading multiple demanding apps, but the accelerometer has held up so far. My 14 day return window is ending soon, so I hope this one will hold up in the long run.

Based on my experiences, I'm led to believe that this is a hardware problem and the evidence points to the overheating theory. It most definitely is not coming from a third-party app and it seems unlikely that it is a software problem. Both safe mode and factory resets did not fix the accelerometer, suggesting that software is not the culprit. Some are blaming Nova Launcher, but there have been people that have not installed Nova who reported this bug. There's also an apparent "fix" that uses an app called "Rotation Lock Adaptive" to restore auto-rotation. This app merely circumvents the accelerometer and does not address the fixed x-coordinate. If you have a defective device, I would recommend that you return or exchange it immediately before you get stuck with it. If Samsung later admits that it is a hardware problem, you will have to go through a lengthy warranty process that will leave you without a phone for a number of days. Given the fact that many people have had no problems with the S6 Edge, I'm led to believe that Samsung just released a bad batch of phones. Whatever the cause is, it seems as though getting a Galaxy S6 Edge right now is a roll of the dice. Anyway, take what you will from my experience. Just thought I'd give my two cents.

TL;DR: 1st phone broke, 2nd phone broke, 3rd phone - so far so good. Probably faulty hardware, return bad phone now.

These phones are apparently made at different locations. So far I seen China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam etc. I read where people are saying the China ones are the bad ones. If this is true that could possibly support the hardware/manufacturing theory. It tells you on the box the date and location where the phone was made. I know this doesn't help with all the phones that were already returned, the box is probably gone too, so there's no help there. Mine says 3/18/2015 Made in Vietnam and I have no issues. I'm not making any guesses here or insinuating anything. And I know as soon as somebody says they have a broken phone from somewhere other then China, and im sure somebody will, this post will mean nothing. But just something to think about until Samsung releases an official statement, if they ever do. I understand you have no choice where your phone is made, Verizon for example might have all their phones come from China. But at least you have the date also to narrow it down to a certain time frame and batch.

Just wanted to update and share my experience with Verizon..I just got off chat with them about my Edge and the rotation problem. I was told it is a known issue and they are replacing any phone with the problem. They are sending me a replacement as soon as they get NEW stock in. There was no factory resetting or remote trouble shooting and no questions asked. Should ship in about 1-2 weeks so I feel they handled my problem without any hassle and Im happy with the results. Now lets cross our fingers and hope this one will be ok. Seeing how we are waiting on NEW stock makes me think it should be. So if you have a problem contact your carrier. :)

When I received my s6 edges, they were each made in Vietnam. The first one would get hot. The second one I didn't even attempt to put it through any real testing since the screen had a bad spot, either glue or a piece missing. The third edge has been working correctly for eleven days. This one does not get as hot as the first. I use the fast charger and stream music 8 hours a day mon-fri at work.

This one was made in Vietnam on 4-1 and the box list it as REV 0.2. I wish I would have a note of the first two edge's dates and REV number.

I think that it may not matter so much where they were assembled as much as where the source of the parts for the assembly were manufactured on dates.

I think it is a hardware issue and not software. The chip that controls the rotation, if I remember correctly, is on the same board the cpu resides and is directly next to cpu.

I would suggest if your's is not working that you take it back asap and try another at the store you bought it at. I'm afraid if a software fix is released it would only be some work around.

Yea T-Mobile appears to come from Vietnam. There are other hardware differences between the models and carriers, The CDMA versions Verizon and Sprint mainly, have different modems inside then the GSM versions. And the design of the regular S6 and the edge is different also, one has the sim card slot on top and the other has it on the side. There is software differences also, because the edge has features the regular S6 doesn't have. But as far as what the trigger is I read every possible scenario so far. Some only used fast charger, some used no charger, some used wireless charger only, some used old charger only, some didn't work out of the box, some broke a week later. There's really nothing in common.

I think the one thing I have read in common amongst all those with the problem is that their phones would get very hot...either from charging, or doing something CPU intensive. Mine gets a little warm when using the GPS, but not what I would call hot. I mostly use a slow charger overnight so no heat issues there either. I've had mine for about a week now and no issues with rotation. Then again I don't ruse the fast charger because I don't need it so that eliminates that heating issue.

This fast charger/slow charger labeling stuff is getting ridiculous. This isn't a rogue charger, its the charger that came in the box. Yes its a fast charger buts its the OEM charger for the S6. No where do they tell you go out and buy a slow charger or use this one only under certain conditions to be safe. This is meant to be the everyday charger for the phone. For the millions of phones their going to sell, this is the only charger the majority of people are ever going to use, doesn't matter if they needed a quick charge or not, this is it, whether anybody wants to believe it or not. Yes I understand the chip theory, the bad one burns out and if you have a good chip theres no issues. But people refusing to use the charger? This was one of the main selling points with the phone. Why would anybody even want to keep a phone their going to have to baby and walk on egg shells with the whole time. Because their afraid it might break for using the OEM charger? If thats the case just return it now because your saying theres a defect and a design flaw. You have people here saying the rotation didnt work out of the box, wheres the charger/heat theory there?

I'm on my second S6 Edge device after the first stopped auto rotating. My sister is on my account and she is on her third device (hers is still rotating so far). The second device I have now also stopped rotating. I did the * # 0 * # dialer code to get into the diagnostics screen and confirmed that the X axis was stuck and not registering input. I went to my carrier to swap the device, which they gladly will, but they were out of stock and had to order a replacement device. This was on Saturday.

Now this is where it gets weird: I went to take a picture of something this morning and notice that the camera UI rotated with the phone. I quickly went to check other apps and they are all rotating like normal again. I checked the accelerometer in the diagnostics screen again and all 3 axises are registering and functioning normally. I haven't done anything to the phone since the auto-rotate quit working. No app installs/uninstalls, no factory reset, no "magic fixes".

I thought I'd post this since I had become convinced that there was a hardware failure issue behind the auto rotation issue (with the quick charge overheating being a leading theory). While that might still be true, my anecdotal evidence suggests that it could be a software problem after all. Hardware doesn't typically self-repair. This makes me wonder if I had just given the other devices some time, if auto-rotate would have started functioning again? Has anyone else lost rotation only to see it magically return? I've been keeping up with this thread and few others since my first failure (which was probably on the 12th of April) and I don't think I've seen anyone say their autorotation came back.

My 2nd Black S6 edge 64GB from US Cellular stopped rotating last night. I will tell you that I was using it in bed to text sideways and then went to plug it in to the fast charger. Right as soon as i plugged it in to the charger, I was no longer able to rotate it. I instantly unplugged it and restarted it and I still couldn't rotate. I am going to go into US cellular today to see if they will let me switch to the regular s6.

Alright guys! So I traded in my phone friday and have not used the fast charger since and the phone seems to be working fine! I hope it stays this way!

Wow, this seems like a pretty major kerfuffle going on. I hope one of the AC crew is looking into this to ensure the cause can be proven to be Fast Charge so they can warn people to stop using it.

I actually think the opposite. Fast charging is one of the features that samsung is pushing for the devices so to stop using it because it could break the phone is Samsung's problem. Everyone should be able to use all the features of their device without it defecting. Now for some they probably don't care to use and not a feature they really cared about to purchase the phone. But I still think it's bad practice to avoid using something that comes with the device in the fear that something will go wrong. People should keep using them and taking devices back. The only way to acknowledge the problem is when enough people are reporting. Otherwise if users simply act as if it doesn't exist then they won't try to rectify until next years device comes out.

Yikes! I was going to upgrade to a S6 Edge, think I'll wait until this issue get's resolved. Hopefully, sooner than later? I don't have time to mess around returning phones. Seems as though this is quit wide spread as I've seen this brought up on other forums, etc., as well.

I just got off the phone with Verizon. They said that it is a software issue not a hardware issue and that Samsung is working on a patch for it. They then transferred me to Samsung support who then disconnected me. But that's what I got from Verizon today.

Spoke with Samsung and they said that it is an Android software issue. Google knows about it and that it will be fixed in the 5.0.3 code version once released. (of course verizon has to approve the software update as well)

Where do you guys get the manufactured date?
Mine was made in China and it's the Sprint version GS6 Edge Gold Platinum 64GB.
Just came home yesterday afternoon while I was at work so I haven't got time to play with it.

It should be on the side of the box the phone came in. The label should show where it was made, the date, serial number Imai, and hardware revision.

I have an S6 Edge and my screen rotation is just fine, although now that AT&T has the regular S6 128GB available I am swapping back to that it will be here on Monday. I just don't feel the Edge is worth the extra money or aggravation in finding accessories. Still its been solid, no battery drain issues, no screen issues, no issues at all, except for the sucky bootup sound AT&T puts on it.
