So I just wanted to report back after getting my third 64GB S6 Edge from Verizon. There are a lot of tinfoil hat theories going around about this accelerometer defect so I'm going to try to debunk them and make an educated guess as to what the root of the problem is based on my experiences.
My first phone worked for a few days without any issues. However, it was noticeably hot at times especially when using the fast charger. I noticed one day that my auto-rotation function didn't work so I did some research online to try to find a fix. Others reported that their accelerometer's x-coordinate was stuck, so I checked mine and I had the exact same problem. I performed a factory reset, but the accelerometer was still stuck from the start. I went to my local Verizon store and had the phone replaced.
I was a little more attentive with my second phone and checked my accelerometer to see if I could pinpoint a potential trigger. I restored my phone, transferred all my information, and installed all my apps. No problems but again, the phone was noticeably hot. I got home and plugged in the fast charger for the first time and when I checked the accelerometer an hour later, it was stuck. Tried safe mode and factory reset... still stuck. I went back to the Verizon store to try one more time before I switched to the regular S6.
It's now been 9 days since I got my third S6 Edge and I've had no problems so far. The way I transferred contacts, messages, restored by backup, installed my apps, was the same. My third phone has been a lot cooler in general. I've used the fast charger multiple times and stress tested the phone by loading multiple demanding apps, but the accelerometer has held up so far. My 14 day return window is ending soon, so I hope this one will hold up in the long run.
Based on my experiences, I'm led to believe that this is a hardware problem and the evidence points to the overheating theory. It most definitely is not coming from a third-party app and it seems unlikely that it is a software problem. Both safe mode and factory resets did not fix the accelerometer, suggesting that software is not the culprit. Some are blaming Nova Launcher, but there have been people that have not installed Nova who reported this bug. There's also an apparent "fix" that uses an app called "Rotation Lock Adaptive" to restore auto-rotation. This app merely circumvents the accelerometer and does not address the fixed x-coordinate. If you have a defective device, I would recommend that you return or exchange it immediately before you get stuck with it. If Samsung later admits that it is a hardware problem, you will have to go through a lengthy warranty process that will leave you without a phone for a number of days. Given the fact that many people have had no problems with the S6 Edge, I'm led to believe that Samsung just released a bad batch of phones. Whatever the cause is, it seems as though getting a Galaxy S6 Edge right now is a roll of the dice. Anyway, take what you will from my experience. Just thought I'd give my two cents.
TL;DR: 1st phone broke, 2nd phone broke, 3rd phone - so far so good. Probably faulty hardware, return bad phone now.
