Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Prime) Waiting Room

I don't know what country/state/city you live in, but here probably 9 out of 10 people will say they have a "droid" even if they are on T-Mobile, AT&T or Sprint. And it is absolutely because of marketing and the fact that people associate Android with being a "Droid."

It's the same way that people associate MP3 players as being iPods...it's because of marketing and popularizing a particular brand/product. Yes, most consumers are ignorant...which is why well-targeted marketing works in the first place. Otherwise, people would simply study products themselves and buy the best ones for them. Instead, they just run out and buy something like the iPad2 because they assume it's the only thing worth buying, even if something else may suit them better.

Brandon

or "Frigidaire" for refrigerator

or "Reynolds Wrap" for aluminum foil

or "Band Aid" for adhesive bandage

or "Chap Stick" for lip balm

or "Crock Pot" for slow cooker

I could go on forever with this. :)

VZW did not do a good job of marketing the Droid line, and it certainly did not cause everyone to think Droid = Android. The average consumer is ignorant, so don't mistake confusion for good marketing. It's like how a lot of iphone4 users think they have 4g. How can that be attributed to good marketing when Apple never said the phone had 4g?
Secondly, if you think any OS can demolish another OS in one iteration, you're wrong.
Thirdly, what's this crap about VZW wanting ICS to rule the world? Did they really just painstakingly negotiate with Apple less than a year ago to sell the iphone, only to throw all that away to boost Android?

This would suggest otherwise. It not only helped Verizon, but had an impact on the other Android manufacturers (HTC, Samsung).

Agreed 100%. Check out the numbers from pre OG Droid release to 2 months post OG Droid release some time. They are even more ridiculous, and that was all marketing. Yes, it was a great phone, but Verizon's marketing department is the reason it sold the way it did.

Marketing was definitely the key early on. This Wired article gives really good insight into that. It's a great read. It wasn't Verizon's marketing department, though.

Feeling cornered, Stratton reached out to McGarry Bowen, a young ad agency known for its unconventional approach. “We told them they had a week,” said someone who was involved in the discussions. “A few days later, cofounder Gordon Bowen comes back and says, ‘What do you think when I say Droid?

I guess what I meant to say was that yes, the Droid marketing campaign was successful in that it helped sell a buncha phones, and money is all that matters for businesses. But it failed in providing consumers with a clear concise definition of what "Droid" actually means. I have yet to hear a good answer for this. Maybe this confusion was part of the marketing scheme. who knows.

That's the point. It doesn't mean anything except that Verizon is spending more money to market the device.

It has everything to do with the arrangement between Verizon and the manufacturers. The manufacturers have to pay more for "Droid" branding, and in turn Verizon will more heavily market the device. That's it.

there are tons of Android devices out there. the only thing that makes a Droid a Droid is the fact that VZW pays money to Lucas Films, Ltd. to put that name on it.

When I think of 'Droid', I think of robotics, guns, explosions, cyborgs, red, motorola, and awesome.

When I think of iPhone. I picture Justin Bieber, emo dudes, Adam Lambert(you know what I mean), walled gardens, and Jobs pointing his finger at you and saying NO; to anything you want on your iPhone.

I would say the Droid campaign has been successful. The OG Droid has probably sold more units than any other "Droid" phone.

To me "Droid" mean's a manly version of iPhone, plain and simple. Can you picture guy's who go noodling using iPhones? Nope! I can picture them using Droids though.

That was a huge launch. I didn't even get my OG until January. There was a lot of hype and marketing behind that. Great device.

In the hopes of changing the discussion onto something I'm more interested in. No offense to anyone, this droid branding talk and statistics about the OG droid just don't interest me.

Anyone see the Samsung Note with it's Super AMOLED HD Display.

1280 x 800 resolution is nuts. That's the same resolution as my tablet.

God all this samsung news is such a tease for us who are waiting on the prime.

The question is how small can they get that screen down to? The Note is 5.3", right? If the Prime were that large I would have to pass on it.

Yeah, me too. The current 4.5" screens are a touch to big for me. Any bigger than that is a definite deal breaker

If the Prime came with this size screen i would jump on it even though its so big lol. I think its too wide really, But if you take this size and squeeze it into the GSIIE4GT casing it would be perfect with ICS

I haven't seen the new Epic personally yet, bit it looks a tad too big for me. I want screen size and a sleek package. A nice even mix. I don't want a mini tablet

That's why they make different types of phones. This one isn't for you. There are others to choose from. Personally, I'd love it.
