Where's Froyo for the Fascinate?

There is no doubt in my mind that the hang up is with the US carriers not with Samsung. They are no doubt busy tweaking Froyo so that it locks down features that the carrier charges for like teathering and installing new default apps like blockbuster and bing which can not be removed by the user.

I don't see that as being the case. Why do so many other US phones have frouo but not the galaxy S phones? If it was to put on bloatware, then these other phones would be delayed.

The Verizon fascinate is my first Smartphone and I am still learning how to use it after

purchasing it one month ago. My question is: Where and from whom do all the anticipated release

dates for Froyo come? The internet is full of differing dates regarding the release, and to date

all have been erroneous. Even this particular thread contains entries ranging from a November

release, to by Christmas day, then before the end of 2010, and finally by February 2011.

Are these dates just guesses put out by anxious owners of the Fascinate, or are they "planted" by

Samsung, or Verizon to keep the interest level up which will enhance further sales? Now I see

that one theory says that Samsung will skip 2.2 and go straight to 3.0 for the fascinate.

The whole thing reminds me of the Peanuts cartoon characters (Charlie Brown and Lucy) where Lucy

keeps tempting Charlie to kick the football while she holds it upright only to pull it away

causing Charlie to fall. But like us, Charlie is the eternal optimist and ends up trusting that

Lucy will not fool him again.

I've been on and off phones for a while now. My first Android phone was the original Droid, then I used an iPhone 3GS, then an Epic, and now a Fascinate. I've spent time modding my Android devices and trying out different custom ROMs.

I think this will be the last Samsung phone I get and I'm hoping the HTC Thunderbolt releases by the end of Jan. Sure if you root and install a custom ROM on your Fascinate, you don't necessarily need Froyo but not everyone wants or should have to root their phone and mod to have an ideal Android experience. There is enough software fragmentation on the Android platform as is, in fact that's one of the main issues I have with it. There's no need for manufacturers/carriers to even further that by delaying major updates on a high-end device.

I feel that Galaxy S owners are really going to end up getting the short end of the stick when it comes to updates. The Nexus S will be the first to get the major updates, followed by the HTC devices, and the "Droid" phones as well. We're going to end up getting the same delays and false promises with this phone.

From now on, it's going to be HTC for me I believe. I think they have real solid design and decent hardware, as well as the best custom UI, and their phones get updated within a decent timeframe.

Totally agree. The Fascinate is slowly becoming the Droid Eris. Not as far as specs/performance, but by how is was basically released then forgotten about. Especially with the report of the 2 new LTE phones VZW is going to announce.

I picked up my first HTC phone (it's a WP7), but pretty happy with the solid feel and design. The Fascinate will go on eBay (or given to a family member, or used for testing) as soon as that Thunderbolt is released, hopefully next month.

I would call Samsung support (all of you) voice your concerns as to why something is not available or does not work. I have at least 4 times in 7 days. Now getting it replaced again. I had two Desires, 1st had problems stock with message counter not resetting to zero after all being read. It required a reboot each time and after the 2.2 update it was not fixed and other issues, 2nd HTC Desire came with 2.2, bluetooth was intermittent and Forced close during phone call.

Im not really worried about 2.2, flash isnt really a big concern for me, might be for alot of you though, my phone runs smoothly without froyo, im not panicking, it will come within a couple of months, or if they do skip and go right to 2.3 thats just as good. We just have to wait it out, it will be here soon, its not like they forgot about us, its a very popular phone for verizon.

I believe Froyo will be out the same time that Dr. Dre releases Detox around Neveruary 32nd 2012.

Perhaps one reason for the delay is that the new OS code puts more load on the battery than a lithium-ion battery can deliver. A battery made from "unobtainium" appears to be the only solution. :)

Actually, I hear Samsung is researching the use of midi-chlorians in their batteries.

I think that if Verizon releases the Thunderbolt and the new Samsung device next week than they'd probably release FroYo for the Fascinate at the same time. At least that would make the most sense.

But more importantly, if they release both of those phones next week I'm still within my 30 days... So I'll be happily jumping ship to a brand new, shiny, fully-updated 4G Android device :) .. probably the Samsung.. as long as it's a 4in screen :)

I called technical support today regarding froyo, when our gps will be fixed and media hub for verizon. The lady told me she wasn't sure media hub would be available for verizon. Regarding froyo and i quote "if it becomes available it will be posted on the samsung website". This a complete outrage we are now past all the deadlines so now they refuse to give false information, which wasnt a problem before telling us this would be out in sept, oct, nov, end of yr, and now its "if it becomes available". I'm starting to begin to think I will be stuck on eclair until it is time for a new phone in 2 yrs.

Just typical with these devices, you buy a wicked newfangled electronic thingy and one month later they are almost obsolete.
Crap I just passed my 30 day period and these new phones coming out make me drool. Don't have 4g in my area but still I want one.

I think it's clear that Samsung is only thinking about what new device they're going to release next. The Galaxy Tab launched with froyo, the Nexus S launched with Gingerbread of course, and the 4G verizon phone will launch with froyo. The way this is going, I wouldn't be surprised if we still don't get updated to froyo within the next 2 months.

I hope that the Thunderbolt or 4G Samsung phone release before my 30 days are up, because I'm having second thoughts about picking up the Fascinate. I know that sooner or later all electronic gadgets become outdated, but it's starting to get way out of hand with these Android smartphones.

It only takes a few months if even, and your brand new "high-end" device lags behind on software updates.

i highly doubt these phones will launch as early as next week...i think more than likely early February is when we see them on shelves

Yea I'm not getting my hopes up. 4G and a front facing camera aren't absolutely necessary for me so I wouldn't be completely pissed either way. But I'm just saying, if it happens to come within my 30 days, why not trade up?

i completely agree...i work for verizon, and i've gone through the D1, Incredible, X...and now I carry both the Fascinate and Droid Pro.

I have an upgrade 2/26 and I'll be dropping my Fascinate for the Thunderbolt, hands down.
